Disappointing Debut

According to industry projections, American Idol winner Jordin Sparks's debut CD is expected to come in at #2 this week, behind Alicia Keys' As I Am, which will dominate throughout the holiday season.
This is surprising to us. We really like Jordin's single, Tattoo.
Spark's album is expected to sell between 90,000 to 100,000 - making it the lowest debut for an American Idol winner ever.
Even some runners up have sold more in their first weeks!
That must hurt. Just a little.

She came in 1 week after Keys came out with hers. Bad timing by the record company.
She still needs to lose more weight. She's beautiful and will sell more later on.

With all the late night talk show off the air due to the strike there's not as many outlets to promote her album. I had no idea she had an album out.

Jordin is VERY talented. Unfortunately she has to do the music that is being pushed at her right now. Yes, this album is LAME-LAME-LAME. Tattoo was obviously written by a 15 year old. Hell, make her the first big African-American country singer. Break new ground. All of the shit on this album has been done a thousand times before.
i never liked her voice, and what happened to tailor hicks? poor guy. the bottom line is that even though you might win the competition, it does not gaurantee success. first you need an amazing voice like carrie underwood, second you can not be fat, third you will have to be somewhat pretty. and jordan no offense had neither of these qualities.

Give Jordin a chance, her song is still steadily climbing the charts and I don't think anybody expected her to sell as well as Kelly, Carrie or Daughtry—my prediction is a little over 150,00 which is still respectable for a new artist these days

I think that lame song Tattoo did no favors for her at all. She should have come out with a much better first single. Right now, I would say her best single on her album is "No Air" with Chris Brown. If she is smart she'll make that her next single.

Daughtry sold about 300k on the same release date (Black Friday week) last year. He came in #2 as well. Daughtry moved beyond the Idol fan base and began to take off. I am not sure if Jordin can do the same. I don't think Jordin's #2 is as troubling as the total. She'll be lucky to hit gold.
I didn't really like her on Idol because she struck me as being too young & inexperienced in show biz. She has a good voice but she needs some better song writers for sure.

I am not surprised Jordin's album didn't do well. I looked on itunes all week and not once was it listed in the new releases. What's up with that? I'm am sure that a lot of people out there didn't even know her album was out. Overall, the album is really good though. I think it is just one of those that has to catch on. I see it being a late bloomer.

This album is actually very very good. Every song on this album could be a single! She deserves to sell more records then brit brit- at least she can sing!
I feel like she hasn't gotten any media exposure. I haven't seen her on any TV shows or anything promoting the album. At that, it seems like American Idol's first CDs are always pretty terrible. The only exception of course would be Carrie Underwood… I think the effort in song writing just isn't there though…

I liked the Tattoo single a whole lot and I will definitely check out her CD.
I have the album, and its cool, but im looking forward to Blake Lewis' album, which hits stores December 4th.

well, ok, so tattoo isn't the best song. however, i hear it all the dang time and i had NO IDEA she sang it. that could be a little problematic. if no one knows who sings a certain song they might like, how would they know whose album to buy? she's cute, though, and does actually have talent. it would be sad if she had to lose weight (as some comments suggest) just so she could fit in some dumb cookie-cutter mold.

Jordin made have a bigger voice than Blake but Blake is far more interesting and knows how to work a stage. Jordin just doesn't have that "star" quality, she's more like a Debbie Gibson type. If Blake puts out a real edgy type CD he just might make it big. The problem with AI is that it's mostly middle aged housewives watching it and they don't buy CD's so someone like Jordin or Taylor wins because that's what appeals to the old farts but the kids don't dig it so they don't sell.
Jordin's looks aren't the problem, it's the lack of artistic impression. Jordin does not have a style of her own like Carrie, Daughtry and Kelly have. Bo's career isn't doing that well because even though he's talented he's not doing anything original. His stuff is right off a 1970's playlist. Same thing with Rueben, Fantasia, That creepy Greek guy, and Kat McPhee….no originality or distinctive sound. If you want to sell a CD you have to capture our attention.

I dunno, I'm 22 and absolutely love Taylor Hicks. Went to a few of his live shows and man, he was great!! Loved his CD as well.

The song "Tattoo" totally sucks! Even the remixes sucked. She's really not all that great of a singer. She's not "superstar" material.

Melinda should have taken last year if it were just based on talent alone but fools given the chance to load the ballot box always vote for gimmick over talent. Her and Hicks should tour together.
