Some of you write that Lott didn't resign because of the gay sex story that's breaking soon, but that he's resigning because he can then work as a lobbyist in one year instead of two years. That's wrong. You need to check your sources because that was just speculation by a reporter. LOTT GAVE NO REASON. For a politician to make any move without giving a reason–especially someone like Lott who LOVES to talk on camera–especially a move as big as resigning after 40 years in congress–means there's something embarrassing they're hiding. I've known him for more than 20 years, and he never registered on my gay-dar at all. He always seemed to be a pure political automaton. Here in Missisippi, we could care less about his being gay it were true. (After all, we reelected Jon Hinson after his gay arrests parading around the Iwo Jima monument waving a bandana out of his fly.) What was most devestating and disappointing about Lott was his Strom Thurmond comments. We were incredibly shocked, embarrassed and hurt by that. I don't think he ever fully recovered from it, and he wrote his swan-song book that seemed to signal the end of his political career. Then Katrina destroyed everything he had down here. He didn't seem to want to run again, but everyone begged him to because we desperately needed a seasoned pro to help us recover from Katrina. Now that he's done that as best he could, I think he wants to move on. After what we've suffered, a scandal such as this would hardly get a reaction from most of us. We are still so obliterated, we would not fault him if he needs to make some real money. Hopefully, it won't be some disgusting lobbyist job..but who knows. He's done..and I'm done. I hate politics anyway.

I live in Mississippi, too. In fact, my sister rented a house from Trent Lott's uncle. The uncle was a true racist. He came over once when I was there, talking about Trent and how he used to beg him to take him to school with him, back in the old days. He said sometimes he would take Trent to school with him because they just had very small schools in those days. Anyway, the uncle (Arnie Watson) also used to be in politics in Mississippi years ago. I forget what he was, maybe a representative. They lived in Carroll country. I guess that is where Trent is from. Old Arnie was a racist for sure, using the "N" word like all racist do. I tell the truth. I never liked Trent Lott. I am not Republican or Democrat. I am independent. They both suck. I don't know if this is true, but I am glad Trent is leaving.
