The Bachelorette (That Used To Be A Bachelor)

calpernia.jpg

This is a first on U.S. television!

MTV's GLBT channel, Logo, will be airing a reality dating show starring a transgender woman as the lead!

Transamerican Love Story is centered on transgender activist and actress Calpernia Addams.

The show follows Calpernia as she whittles down a group of eight bachelors, living together in a Los Angeles-area home, with the help of her best friend and fellow transgender activist Andrea James.

Unlike some shock TV in Europe, Calpernia is openly transgender to all the show’s suitors from the start of the series.

The hour-long show is hosted by openly gay comedian and actor Alec Mapa (Ugly Betty, Desperate Housewives) and will premiere in February.

Transamerican Love Story is executive produced by Randy Barbato, Fenton Bailey and Tom Campbell of World of Wonder Productions, who oversee our favorite show on television!

This is one of her best pictures. Most trannies are obvi but she's pretty and quite femine looking, I can still tell though. I think it's the big forehead, most women's foreheads are less pronounced.

The vitriol in some of the replies shows us that transphobia is alive and well on the internet; I guess that's not surprising. What is a little surprising is those who support Calpernia referring to her as "he/she" or "tranny." This woman went through gender reassignment, which is an incredibly difficult and painful (physically and emotionally) process. Give her the respect of using the correct pronoun please.

Being transgender or transsexual has absolutely nothing to do with one's sexuality. The words "gay" and "homosexual" need not apply. Transsexuality concerns one's gender. Homosexuality concern's one's sexual preference. A transsexual can be gay/bi/ or straight.

Calpernia Adams is a straight woman. She has endured years of hormonal replacement therapy, electrolysis, facial reconstruction and had her final surgery on her original genitalia. She has earned her stripes as a full fledged woman and deserves to be treated as any other woman.

Any man that would be attracted to Calpernia would be attracted to A WOMAN; not A MAN. Last time I checked, men that would date women are straight. Moreover, there are many stunningly beautiful transsexual women in the world. Many are more beautiful than biological women and some are even models. After the final surgery, many people cannot tell the difference (even in bed). Many of these women live wonderful, full and healthy lives following years of physical, psychological, and emotional torment. Some become models, actresses, singers, doctors, professors, lawyers or even marry.

OK, sorry. I used "tranny" because Perez uses it and I've become used to it.

Used to go and see her at the drag shows in Nashville. She's really, really nice in person. Kinda disappointed that you didn't mention the movie 'Soldier's Girl' was based on her relationship with Barry Winchell or her activism. She's not just some random tranny who popped up to do this show.

WOW, its good to see that everyone is becoming more open-minded! I've seen her before though, wasn't her boyfriend murdered because his army mates didn't approve of him dating her? Its good to see that she is being honest about her sexuality

I know Calpernia - she was on the board of directors of an org I used to work for. She is beautiful and HOT - much more than this picture shows. And she is sweet as hell…

I hope that this all works out for Calpernia. There are so many ways for something like this to blow up in her face. i.e. by telling the guys she will be a transsexual woman supposed she gets a guy who ends up wanting to get dressed up with her or who has sexual orientation issues and then ends up coming out as gay etc. etc. Such fears are why so many transsexual young women opt to hide their past from guys until they are sure the man is 100% into them.

Wanting to avoid getting a gender/sexual orientation related surprise is the very reason that so many transsexual women who can pull it off don't tell guys their past right off the bat. It raises questions about the man that a woman should not have to ask.

I did my transition 10/2005 and hope that she will have sucess and maybe more people will understand us better. I work at the airport as a screener and I have tried to lift the antiquated misconceptions many people have of us. I hope that she will have a fantastic future. Jenn

I can't believe how up in arms people are about this. It's a tv show, people. That means that you can choose whether or not to watch it. And if you're some big ol' transphobe, then *please* tune in to the 700 Club instead. Or you could watch the gorgeous Calpernia on her quest for love and boost the ratings ;)
