The best thing was when we almost moved to Georgia when I was in 7th grade, I was in accelerated classes, but in Georgia I would have AT LEAST been in 10th or 11th grade. The South need to catch up, the north industrialized first and emphasized on education fist while the South had kids working at home. My entire family, besides my immediate family are all European. I'm the only true American citizen, but I am proud. I have noticed that Europeans talk about how unworldly some Americans are, and how we are too involved in ourselves and know very little about the rest of the world. Europeans travel all over their continent, visiting different countries all the time. My family is always traveling to France, Italy, Greece etc. etc. because their "world" is so much more compact than ours. In the U.S. each state is in some ways like a different country. You travel from California to New York to Idaho and it's a completely different way of life in each state. This it not an ignorant statement by me, as my European cousins have said the same thing. We cannot help it if we are wrapped up in our own country, there is just to much to do and see because we are so diverse. This is also why it is pathetic for foreigners to label all Americans as dumb, because we are all so different. I do love America and have met many wonderful Americans. In fact we lived in America for a year and my son attended a highly rated Private school, but he still required a lot of extra tuition when we came back to New Zealand to get up to speed with his classmates, especially with English.
It was a shock to see how narrow the American curriculum was, you could just about gurantee that the subject of History was only American History, as if the rest of the world never exsisted. The same with Geography, being able to name the fifty states and their capitals was the high zenith of this subject.
I urge all Americans to get a Passport and travel and find out about the rest of the world - you will be no doubt surprised to find the rest of the world also has many wonderful things to offer and an open mind is a healthy thing.
