The First Reviews Are In
Miz Whitney Houston performed her big comeback concert at the Live & Loud music festival in Malaysia this weekend, and lucky PerezHilton.com reader Kyle was able to attend.
Here are his thoughts on the show:
"Hey P!
My name's Kyle and I just came back from the Live&Loud Music Festival in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Saturday where Whitney Houston performed and made one of her first comeback shows. I could tell, the people went there just to see Whitney and even my partner and I forked out around USD$900 for the tickets. We were all up to see Whitney and arrived around 7.00pm when Elliot Yamin was performing. We waited and waited and finally Whitney came in around midnight with a silver top, matching pants and white trench coat. She sounded ok but her voice got husky and apparently she couldn't hit all the high notes in her top songs. She even sounded like Amy Winehouse at times! She told the audience she's dropping a new album soon and during rendering 'My Love is Your Love', her daughter joined her on stage to sing a duet. Overall, the performance was great but the voice was just ok. In fact, thousands who waited patiently since afternoon to see Whitney, sort of disappointed with that and left after she sang 3-4 songs. As much as I enjoyed the show, I must admit that I expect more of her. Perhaps she'll get better with time!

PS: I'm sorry I couldn't attach any video of the performance because the organizer warned the audience [3 times] that no recording or photographing is allowed during her performance. This didn't apply when Shaggy, Elliot Yamin and others were performing prior to her! Seems like she's still a diva after all!"

This makes me kind of sad, she might get better with time but will never get her "I Will Always Love You" voice back. She used to be the best, even better than Mariah but now it sounds like she more in Beyonces league
She was like that in the eighties, three or four songs, couldn't hit all the notes, or do more than one "run", definitely a disappointment. That is when I learned they fix it in the mix, pull different lines and make one track.
Give it time. Mary J. did a ton of drugs too, and she got a lot of her voice back. Let's hope Whitney can do the same.
Leaving Bobby and getting clean and sober was a huge first step, and recovery takes time. If she never sang again but lived a happy and clean life, then it's victory in my eyes.
Forget about Whitney! I want to hear more about that adorable Elliott Yamin! I live near Richmond VA and Elliott is like our local boy all growed up and done good, and his mother is SOOO adorable too! Rooting for Elliott when he was on American Idol really energized our whole town. I have had the pleasure of seeing Elliott perform live three times now and he puts on a terrific live show. He really, sincerely appreciates his fans and is grateful for the opportunity to entertain people and make a living with his music.

Years ago, I bought tickets for my parents to see her on Fathers Day at Nassau Coliseum In NY. They planned their day around the concert. They went there, got to their seats, only to hear an announcement that she canceled…. ten minutes after the show should have started. WHAT AN UNGRATEFUL, SELFISH GREEDY BITCH!!!! I knew Whitney was making huge mistake when she married Bobby Brown. Can you say "loser", she was slumming for sure. Now that she finally dumped that dead weight, she can get herself together. I hope so I love Whitney! She's still awesome in my book!

OMG. Whitney tanked BIG TIME.
I was there are sat (on the grass) throughout the pretty tedious crap from the local Malaysian artistes all evening just so I could see Whitney perform on stage - it's always been a dream on mine to see her live in concert - and when she finally came on AN HOUR after Shaggy said goodbye (HE was great, by the way), we were really disappointed with her voice and performance. My husband, and he should know, pretty much thought she was high on something, just from her gestures, I just thought she'd lost the plot. At one point during her second number, she pulled her trenchcoat aside and started scratching her fat ass tummy (my she got fat!) in an absentminded way and a few people next to me, my husband included, exchanged surprised looks, like 'what the fu-'??!!! Yeah, it was BIZARRE. She kept doing that and we sort of got fed up and left after 5 songs. We felt really sad for WH, because unlike Britney Spears, she actually had a lot of talent and let life on drugs take it over. Britney on the other hand, was a good laugh during her comeback bid and will remain so for a long long time, if not forever, unless she cleans up her act. Poor Whitney.

I felt bad for Kyle, I got the elite pass tickets for free, and so did the people who sat around us. Thank God I didn't pay for them though, the food and drinks was overpriced and the hour wait in between every segments are a fucking joke. Anywho, back to Whitney's performence. I left after she did 3 songs. The performence itself was BORING, but Whitney herself was great. Eventhough she couldn't hit all the high notes but her voice was still there. She has put on abit of weight on her too! It was definately surreal the first time she came out. Too bad everyone was too exhausted by the time her segments came on.

sometimes we are confronted with situations in live which are just to much, therefore we act stupid. But at this point in time it was the only way to act or re-act. WH had a very difficult time (an no, it has nothing to do with money), she was just in love with a man that miss-leaded her all the way…

- no beer
- no parking (can you believe that a concert is hosted on a Polo field without parking… Malaysia truly Asia… smile)
- to many malaysian "hotel" singers

people r so critical of whitney. no artist's voice will stay the same forever. she is in her mid forties and she hasn't performed for years. the songs she has sung in here career, no one else can ever duplicate though many have tried. even if she never met bobby brown, her voice will still have changed as she got older. the vocal chords r like any other musle, u don't use them on a regular basis u lose them, but with regular performing she will strengthen them again. at least she is not lip syncing like everyone else.

The songs she's known for are hard to sing, you have to belt them out. All singers, over time learn to adjust, lower the key, etc. If you've noticed Celine has 'lightened' up, too. She might surprise us, let's hope so.

It's going to be a long road back for Whitney, but she can make it. Seriously. Look at Mariah Carey. After she had meltdown, she never sang as well again. Her last album, while wildly popular, showed her higher notes got a whole lot breathier and less stable and those top high notes are pretty much gone. She still had one of the biggest CDs of her career.
I hope Whitney can do it. The gays are rootin' for you!
Get better with tme? She's like 60 years old now. How much time is really left? She was better before. Before she married Bobby, Before "crack is wack." In essense, before the train wreck. She had an incredible God-given gift in that voice she had the potential to be amazing, she could have had a carreer to rival Strisand's, but she took it for granted, squandered it with her selfish obsession to a no-good-looser of a husband and drugs. I feel sorry for that little girl Bobbi to have grown up in that chaos. Whitney has finally come to her senses, but those years have not been without sacrifice, her looks, her voice, the public opinion and respect. There are some things you throw away and can never get back.
Whitney may not have been able to hit the high notes like she used to, but her voice is still powerful and undeniably "Whitney". She looked beautiful and her performance was flawless. I stayed till the end even though I got in for free. Those who weren't there should be the last to talk about Whitney!! And if you dislike her so much, why do you even want to comment about her voice, her life, her profession…even her right to keep her kid? (who by the way looked very sweet, and both looked like they love each other very much)

Maybe they should have had Whitney open for Elliott Yamin, instead of the other way around? Elliott may have come out of the American Idol mediocrity machine, but he is a rare talent. His CD is good, but his voice live is even better.
I am sure whitney did well .It was not a full concert. and who knows wheter your critic is tone deft or not .. she is in malaysia.. the dont speak ENGRISH very well. i am sure Whitney say as well as she is looking these days. She is the greatest voice of all.. so eat that Celine.
