i'm shocked to read that manyof you can't or won't attempt to understand that the mir project is paving the way to create a new 9th ward community…which would be inclusive of some former residents and many new residents…most of the former reputation of the 9th ward was due to piling people in a low-quality, no one cares "neighborhood" to begin with..these are people not cattle…with that type of negativity and gloom around is it surprising that crime was high in the 9th ward……many of you knowing or unknowing have expressed numerous racist and prejudice remarks…..it is always amazing to me how when something happens to most of us then when want compassion and understanding but when it occurs to someone else oh they deserved it….save your judgemental comments and put your money where your mouth is….your comments have done nothing….i on the other hand have donated to support such a conscious, well-organized, world-impactful cause….that will be remembered and recognized one-day when all of you are died and gone…with your hate and non-compassion for All of humanity

I live in new orleans and i grew up in the 9th ward. New orleans isn't that horrible people. It's a wonderful city but we do need help. I'm thankful for anyone who wants to help us in any way.
thanks gina!!! you explained that very well!! and to those who think that "culture" comes out of the french quarter and not the 9th ward, you are very wrong!! the 9th ward was an amazing aspect of new orleans culture when it comes to music, creole food, and traditions. don't get me wrong, the french quarter is a beautiful place, but if you know anything about new orleans, you know that nola "culture" does not come out of the french quarter because the french quarter is mainly a place where culture is reproduced for tourists and where very rich people live. places like the 9th ward are where the amazing music and creole culture that new orleans is famous for is spawned from.
AND, the 9th ward's crime problem was mainly a big problem in the 80's and 90's, by 2000, the crime wasn't really that bad. the bulk of the crime in new orleans pre-katrina and post-katrina is in an area called central city (between uptown and mid-city). The reason why people aren't able to rebuild their homes in the 9th ward is because the people that lived there are part of the socially oppressed lower class of african americans that have been affected by institutionalized racism for generations and were screwed by their landlords or insurance companies. they're not exactly just waiting for handouts, you ignorant, racist, assholes. do a little research on new orleans before you say stupid shit. OH, and i live here and have for 10 years, and the media makes a pretty big deal about the crime, but it's no worse than living in any other urban area, like chicago etc.

Ummm it's nice to try to help, but we've sent $60 billion in aid to New Orleans in tax payers money, and the only ones not rebuilding are the local government. I've done my part.

It's good that Brad Pitt is interested in home design, the re-birth of the Ninth Ward and using his celebrity for that cause. New Orleans is famous for its unique architecture, and there is nothing that makes these new homes unique; the modern homes do not look welcoming and the more "traditional" ones look thrown together. There does not seem to be a relationship between any of the designs, or a sense of community. I hope that City Planners have first say on what is actually constructed.
For someone who has houses all over the planet and planes and choppers and you-name-it to get him there, and motorcycles and endless gas-guzzling toys, this takes the cake in gall and nerve, peddling these Hi-I'm-A-Douchbag hats and over-priced T-shirts, to his "fans." Not any longer.
Get over yourself, Brad. You're not a saint. Saints don't parade their "goodness" all over the place. They do it quietly and anonymously. Did Mother Teresa have a photog present every time she wiped someone's ass? No. And neither should you. If you really want to do some good in this world, pay attention to your kids and write checks QUIETLY to programs already in place.

He is doing a great job. He brought attention to the cause like no other. I think he needs to be respected for it. People who has a working mind relate to what he is doing. It is getting a national coverage because of him. He is an actor doing his best to help. He put his own money and ask people to donate to give fellow americans houses. I hope none of them have any bumps on their credit and have a good income. it is going to get more and more difficult to obtain a mortgage loan in america. these homes will not be beneficial to the prior ninth ward residence. unfortunately, they will not be able to afford these homes. I think town homes would be a better idea and the homes should be designed with a traditional french new orleans style. who does brad think he is. he is going to make a profit from these homes, that is if they sell.

I'm really torn on this…I lived in the 9th Ward on ALVAR ST. I left 2 days before Katrina and never went back. It was a dangerous, murderous city with so much life and charm..now it's a dangerous, murderous city with disgruntled survivors and locals getting beaten by National Guardsman…all my friends who went back I consider NIHILISTS. I agree the houses won't appeal to most in NOLA, and if the local neighborhood folks come back to them, yup they will be trashed…a terrible neighborhood…I want to applaud Brad but why couldn't he build the same type house, but a Shotgun? Make it in keeping with what is left of NOLA? And $150k? Who has that? How will this be paid for?? I believe it's true NOLA residents are living on handouts and what they think is owed them….my ex-husband hasn't worked ONE day since Katrina!! He got so much FEMA money, then got some more…he went to EUROPE for 4 months!! As I said, I am torn…truly. I know at least 20 couples that would live in these houses and keep them up if there were any way for them to afford them…what's up, how does one pay for these homes?

I live in Nola, and he wants to rebuild the most drug infested part, for a bunch of unappreciative thugs who just live off the government fro free, anyway. There are a lot of other people still hurting in NO that are much more deserving of his help, than the 9th ward.
