Better Late Than Never

Filed under: TV News > Jay Leno

mx0035210__opt1.jpg

Finally!

Feeling an intense backlash in Hollywood, Jay Leno has agreed to pay his staff out of his own pocket since they were all fired by NBC as a result of the writers' strike on Friday.

Jay was the only major late night talk show host NOT to support his staff.

He must not care too much about them, though, Leno has only agreed to pay their salary for one week.

While I understand completely your point of view on this issue Perez - I think you need to stop being so hard on every talk show host who doesn't practically give up their own career for the writers. Ellen and Jay are both great talents who have worked extremely hard in life, and they both supported the writers while still watching out for themselves and I see absolutely nothing wrong in that.

It seems pretty ignorant that people are mad because he wouldn't support his staff. It is not his fault that the writer's are on strike. He is not involved in the negotiations in anyway shape or form from my understanding so why should he pay for it? Seems like a liberal train of thought to me, this is America, not Soviet Russia.

Re: COCO – greedy? its not greedy what happend is because of the GREEDY networks and big productions companies not changing contracts to include royalties to writers from internet streamings… thats bullshit if u ask me.
dont talk about issues you know nothing about.

The industry is changing because we like the internet and downloads and free streaming.. but to u it mite seem free that the network streams it to you from there site for free… but there making money from sponsors and adds on there site they pocket that money and give no credit and commission to the writers.

Jay Lenno your a bit of a tight arse

  32. Jessica says – reply to this
    32

You're an asswhole sometimes. It's not his responsibilty to pay anyone. His job is talking to people, he's the host. He's not a producer or anything. It's not his job to manage the writers.

I say sad that he's paying out of his own pockets to the writers? Jay doesn't own the show! Let NBC or better yet let the union pay for it's own stupid strike! Let the union cover the cost of it's striking members! The networks (ABC, CBS & NBC) are relics, and the 'so called scripts of crap shows aren't worth the paper their written on. The "writers" are afraid they won't get a piece of the internet pie (so to speak) as the web takes over where TV falls short. I don't want the dribble the 'writers churn out to become part of my web experience. It's bad enough; when I click on a news story, and have to sit through 45-seconds of commercial. I guess the writings on the wall and Hollywood is going to squeeze every penny out of every inch they can steal? Hey! I watched a movie the other day on 'DVD. I paid good money for the thing, but guess what? The 'DVD starts out with 10-minutes of commercials for other movies the company is currently pushing! Grrrrrr! Commercials commercials! I pay for 'DVDs & for internet; as far as I'm concerned I'm paying for NOT having to watch commercials! That's another myth we've been force fed. Commercials don't sell anything. I've never EVER boughten a single thing ever pushed in a commercial. I've never been tempted to run out and buy something just because I saw it on TV or in an ad. Have you? I doubt it. 2-cents & thank you…

Okay, SERIOUSLY its not LENO'S job to pay the staff. Sure he has more money then God but they aren't HIS employees. Just because the other late night hosts payed their employees doesn't mean Leno has to.

    38

Actually coco, I agree with some of what you say. I don't think it is the responsibility of the host to pay the staffs salary. I must say though, writers are NOT greedy. Compared to the stars and producers, the writers salary is minuscule. They deserve the pay increase they seek.

Re: Mish – It is Leno's money not their's. He should not have payed them in the first place but he was nice enough to do so and he still gets hated on for it. How about we all think and stop being commie libs expecting something for nothing(they are not working why should they recieve pay especially from a fellow coworker). Sometimes life gives you a swift kick in the ass, you gotta get up dust yourself off and move on.

  42. Why Should He says – reply to this
    42

How many have you paid, Perez, out of your own pocket? You profit from the shows they create. Without them you'd have no stars of shows and movies to write nasty things about. Why should he, as a private citizen, pay them, he's not their employer, NBC is. Is he expected to pay everyone who is unemployed for whatever reason that his show has benefitted from. Why don't you expect the same from the man who writes and produces The Office. Don't get me wrong, I happen to be a writer in LA and I totally support the strike, but your complaint is ridiculous.

  45. Shutup Perez says – reply to this
    45

How many other people would do that? Leno is paying workers that he doesn't employ, but rather producers and the such employ, and giving them money and you insinuate that he isn't being generous enough. Perez, why don't you pay them something. Sure, you aren't, nor ever will be, anything like Leno, but you have the same responsibility as he does to pay them. Do you know how much it would cost to pay an entire cast of a show salaries for a week?

  46. Taran says – reply to this
    46

If you had bothered to read the whole article, you'd see that he's up to other things. Jay Leno is a great guy and he's going to take care of his workers. Don't worry about them, and don't partake in this anomosity! because of talk like this, you are pitting the people who are FOR the stike against one another, and making it seem like its time to panic.

Perez, you forget that they chose to strike and now must (pay) the repricussions for those actions. Jay is not obligated to support their cause. Just because you and I think the writers are right, doesn't mean anyone should be skewered for not agreeing!

So, this means they are going to pay his salary when they dump him for Conan? This isn't his staff, it's NBC's staff, they are the ones making all the cash. Yeah, they all get paid too much, but that is what they bring in to the company or else they'd be out like Jay will be in 2009. The writers at least are getting residule checks and they don't exactly make min wage! Let's all pass judgment on everyone, because we are reading some website by some fat guy who makes money by humilating those he doesn't like and fawning over others with the other hand? He says who is good and who is bad in Hollywood, why again? Because he overheard someone say something or let someone who knew someone fist fuck him? Oh, the humanity! We are all so high and mighty!

    57

Why should he have to pay them out of his own pocket? It's great if he does, but people are idiotic to crawl up his ass because he doesn't do so. You could blame NBC for firing them.

Hell, people have known that the strike was coming for a long time, they should even have some personal responsibility to look after their own welfare also. If I knew that there was a chance that I would lose my job, I would have options set up, not just stand around waiting for people with fat wallets to get bullied by the hordes into sharing.

    PS #31 is a fucktard.

I don't see why Jay Leno is being held morally or finanically responsible for the writers' strike. That's silly and totally beyond his control. He's been on the picket lines with the writers and totaly supportive. He doesn't owe the crew anything–the writers, networks, unions etc. are the ones who put the working folks in this bind and should do what they can to get these people their jobs back. What a mess… And have I mentioned how much I miss those new episodes of "The Office"?

To counter the same multiple-posting, one or two Ann Coulter clit-lickers here in this forum, let me tell you a little secret about Jay Leno and his show (since most of you so-called "conservatives" obviously have no clue whatsoever about the way things work in show business): A show like Leno's is composed not of nameless, faceless workers. Yes, I know you conservative worms LOVE when the common working man has no name nor face since it makes it easy for you to shit all over him and steal his money. But as I was saying, a Show like Leno's is a family. Yes, a fucking FAMILY, just like the one you like to tout when playing Pavlov to middle America. These people are not just "workers". It's a special arrangement, a very, very tight-knit group. You don't diss family under the chickenshit defense of "he doesn't owe them anything". You disgusting Republican maggots are too far up Ayn Rand's ass to get that. However. Leno, from a sense of fucking HONOR, has now done what any real man would do: HELPED HIS FAMILY. So, _fuck you_, Red Birds.

  60. Nick says – reply to this

Leno makes how many millions? He has a fortune under his belt but 1 week is tops? What is it about really rich celebrities and other figures who hate to talk about how much they make, and how when they are not being reported on luxurious extravagances they are ultra conservativw about who or what they give money to? Is there some kind of unseen trade-off whenever someone "makes it " where they sit down in a board room and some bald old man in a crinkled buisness suit lays it out saying " You can never be excessive with what we give you or live like a radical with this much cash, never boast, and never spend it in philantropic ways that are too dubiously capricious. And never enjoy talking about what you make, all this money…, treat it like a phantom…Your ego will still be gratified by all the low-lives who follow your private lifestyle in gossip magz. Ok kid ? !" Then he gets wheeled away by assistants and the first check with those high numbers flaps on that new hot someone's lap.

the writers ain't the only important people here , im sick of hearing about the writers , what makes them more important than the cameraman or the cable guy , no host should have to pay there employees salaries they should be at work in the job that there fortunate to have if the writers cant fight there own fight wtf are they doing
ive seen more coverage on the stupid strike than i did about Katrina , don't get me started on all there motivational speeches they are doing and actors appearing for an hour then going home , if this much attention was put on an actual important cause people may actualy make a difference

    Re: COCO

Jay told his staff from the beginning not to go and look for other jobs and that he would take care of them. Then when the show let everyone go last friday, he didn't even bother to call in to say anything to anyone. this is why he should be taking care of his people. He doesn't spend any of this money that he makes from the Tonight Show and has no kids. The majority of his staff has been with him for more than 8 years. Conan doesn't make anywhere near what Jay makes but is taking care of his staff because he made a decision to support his writers.
