The NFL has picked Tom Petty to perform at the Super Bowl halftime show next year.

This seems like a bit of an odd choice.

He needs to duet with Stevie Nicks on Free Fallin'!

Who cares the Superbowl Halftime show really sucks, I only watch the superbowl for the commercials, most of the people in the stadium are not real fans, they are a bunch of rich elitests that bought Superbowl Tickets for over 25,000 dollar just as a status symbol. Tom Petty has consistently delivered straightforward rock and roll; ever the assertive, won't back down, stop dragging my heart around, you don't have to live like a refugee - get off your ass and dance rock.

He makes me happy and his concerts are a lovefest… his fans adore him. No other concert have I ever experienced so much love as at his.

Petty has more talent in his little finger than any of these overexposed pop-tart junkies that think the world owes them. While there are some decent R&B acts (not hip-hop, not rap) out there (Robert Randolph and The Family Band comes to mind) Petty is still one of the greatest rock acts, and a damned great songwriter. (Though I would still put Bob Dylan and Pete Townshend ahead of him. Just my own choice.)

Tom Petty is incredible live and his music spans decades, so yes, he's an excellent choice for the SuperBowl.

Also, NO, Stevie did not duet on Free Fallin' - although she and Tom have done a few duets together - but she did record a version of it for the Party of Five soundtrack that was also on her Enchanted box set. That's probably the basis for the comment about her performing it at the SB.

Not REALLY an odd choice. I mean, they DID come out with that documentary "Running Down a Dream" very recently. Anyway, there's been a pattern of old-farts playing at the Superbowl ever since the Janet Jackson incident: Paul McCartney, The Rolling Stones, Prince…so it's just following that same sequence.

Last time, a current pop star played halftime, DISASTER STRUCK! The 2004 Super Bowl spelled the end of Janet Jackson's career whilst Stinkercake got through unscathed. When Twitney and N'Sync played with Aerosmith in 2001, our respect for Aerosmith went to Hell (sell outs) and sales crashed. MTV are now banned from doing halftime shows, we say GOOD! Quit crying that REAL TALENTED artists play halftime now and not teen queens, pop phenonemons and so forth.
