The Backlash

Christian groups are calling for a boycott of Nicole Kidman's new film, The Golden Compass.

The movie is based on the book The Northern Lights by British author Philip Pullman, which is anti-religious and against organized faith.

Even though filmmakers are claiming any anti-Christian undertones have been removed from the movie, the Catholic League and others are worried that kids will be inspired to buy the book and are urging parents to keep them away from it.

But that will make Nicole Kidman sad. No frown lines!

ANY movie that the Catholic Church does not want you to see you should see twice. They are startomg tp figure out that the time of thier control is at an end. Thank God! Your days of control through fear and child molestation are done. If I were them, I would worry more about explaining how it is they come to be the largest owners of arms plants the world over.

Geeze. They said the same damn thing about Harry Potter. Who really cares. It's a MOVIE. A movie meant to entertain.
It just shows what little faith they have in their god. If they did, they would know that one little movie wouldn't provoke children into Paganism.

Sounds to me like the parents should just spend more time telling their kids the difference between reality and make-believe. It's the hardcore brow-beating, bible thumpers that give us all a bad name by doing stuff like this. I'm Christian, but I don't try to force my faith on people, all it will do is drive others away. If they bothered to watch the film, they'd see that it is not the same as the story told in the book and does little to promote atheism, especially to children who would only see the story and not look for deeper meaning. But typical Catholics, think they know better than everyone and they haven't even seen the film!
      _
Ironically, their call for a boycott makes me want to go and see it.
When you consider that most conflict in the world right now and all throughout the history of civilisation have been cause by religion and/or ethnic differences, it kind of legitimises the need for a debate on atheism.
      _
Children should not feel that they have to pick a 'team' or a 'side' or indeed that someone of a different religion is any different to them. Maybe children need to hear that we're all humans and that religion is not an important thing; it just divides us.
      _
You can believe it god but not religion (agnostic) and as far as I know, this film does not promote any anti-god message. Organised religion is the cause of so much hatred, very ironic actually when you consider that all major religions promote messages of peace and kindness to fellow man.

I heard the Catholic League is one guy behind his computer. The Catholics are going to always scream about anything that has the least whiff of anti-organization. They, and other organized religions, even the Fundamentalists, want to claim "God" and his word as their own. Forget that something might be deeply spiritual or have a God-like figure. No one was freaking out about the Lord of the Rings trilogy which embodied the forces of good and evil, with no Christian core. People confuse organized religion with spirituality all the time. Ask the Quakers, Shakers or Transcendentalists.

      Whassup lovelies…
To clear a few things up, the movie is based on the title of the book "The Golden Compass" which was ORIGINALLY released as "The Northern Lights", by that amazing author Phillip Pullman. The books are incredible. Read the "His Dark Materials" trilogy ("The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass") and it will change your life. Truly. No one should be surprised that the Catholics are freaking out. They always freak out when people start thinking for themselves. The books aren't explicitly anti-Christian at all, really, they just paint a picture of an alternate reality where Christianity has gotten WILDLY out of control (picture the Westboro Baptists writ large and in charge), and of COURSE the Catholics don't like it–they've never been good at handling alternative points of view, now have they? Seriously, read the books.
