Christian groups are calling for a boycott of Nicole Kidman's new film, The Golden Compass.
The movie is based on the book The Northern Lights by British author Philip Pullman, which is anti-religious and against organized faith.
Even though filmmakers are claiming any anti-Christian undertones have been removed from the movie, the Catholic League and others are worried that kids will be inspired to buy the book and are urging parents to keep them away from it.
But that will make Nicole Kidman sad. No frown lines!

I am a children's librarian and this is all just a beat up by the left wing religious loonies. I can't believe that they have even read the book. It is no more anti religion than the last few Harry Potter books and I notice that the uproar which accompanied the first of those books has been absent from the last 5. As in the HP books the goodies triumph in the end.
This book was published first as "Northern Lights" and recently to match the movie "The Golden Compass". The title of the book series is "His dark materials".

Voldemort wasnt able to hurt the people that were fighting him at the last battle in Hogwarts because Harry died for them [and then came back] you see. Guys, i read the first book in 2 days, it's AMAZING, it's an experience, you just GOTTA read the trilogy! The religious undertones in the book are hardly there. People are more angered by the Author's atheism than the contents of his AMAZING literature.

Lord of the Rings = His Dark Materials, Northern Lights (OR The Golden Compass to Americans) = Fellowship of the Rings, The Subtle Knife = The Two Towers, Amber Spyglass = Return of the King. Get it? His Dark Materials is the overall name of the three books as a whole. The Golden Compass is not BASED on Northern Lights - it IS the title of the first book in the US, much like Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in the US. Get it now?
PS. To each his own, Narnia was uber Christian and that movie blew. Hopefully, this atheist or anti organized religion franchise will rock. Everyone has a right to their own beliefs.

Well, I'm a Christian and I read His Dark Material when I was younger and multiple times since. I can't wait for the movie to come out, I've been counting down the days. The book is a work of fiction, just like Harry Potter, The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lord of the Rings, etc.. all banned by Christian groups and all made huge grosses at the box office. So, yeah there are some Christians that don't want to see anything outside of the Ten Commandments on the big screen, but there are still plenty of us showing our love for Phillip Pullman's works! In this world, where young Middle-Easten kids are blowing themselves and young Westerners to bits, where in some countries a woman is sexually assaulted every 33 seconds, where in some countries skeletal people die of starvation and curable diseases every second… the biggest threat to civilised society that these 'Christian groups' can find is a fantasy movie?
For the record, the books are very well written and I found them enjoyable to read. Also, the title of the first book is not 'The Northern Lights' - it's just 'Northern Lights' in the UK.

So me being one to investigate something that my daughter is encouraged not to see I bought and read all three books. I loved them. It's a fictional book!!! Hello. I'm with you sister. I would encourage my daughter to read these books. She's 4 yrs old right now. But in the future if it encourages her to think for herself I'm behind it 100%
