Honestly, about sectioning off those with AIDS, I'm not sure what was so horrible about that sentiment at the time. Perez, I have to agree with him, when it comes with anything having to do with homosexuality, the rest of us often have to tiptoe a bit too lightly. Acceptance does not mean squelching vibrant discourse … but often we have to temper what we say because of concerns that it will be homophobic.
This is not how educated people behave. Gain the ability to hear the valid arguments even from the most bumbling fools. It's how we progress.
He made this comment 15 years ago when a large majority of America felt the same way about people with AIDS. Let us not forget about people saying they didn't want to play basketball with Magic Johnson. Doesn't make them a bad person.

You have to put the comments in the context of the times. I am an RN and I can tell you no one was sure how to handle AIDS at this time. We were placing some patients in an isolation room at the hospital. Center for Disase Control did not have good guidelines. We have learned so much more in the last 10 to 15 years. He even said he would not make the same remarks now based on what we know now.

And back when these statements were made, he had the right to think that. Yes, it may have been known it wasn't passed by casual contact, but when you have a deadly virus spreading and there isn't a way to cure it, who wouldn't have agreed with him. Obviously he has since learned better, but I think it shows real character by not trying to cover up his past. He isn't being like every other politician that wants to just forget about the past and what they have done. People were afraid….not everyone understood how it was spread and how the disease affected the human-body.
As a politician, he was only making a decision based on the knowledge that we all had back than….all he knew that th disease was devastating, killed people, and that it was spreading rapidly. He thought at that time to prevent further exposure of the disease to the general pop. is basically to contain some people.
We still isolate people with highly communicable diseases…SARS, Meningitis, people infected with bacteria resistant to anti-biotic, and TB ( the ones I can list of the top of my head).

Whether you like it or not Perez, Mike Huckabee is absolutely correct. Not a lot was known about AIDS at the time. It should have been quarantined and the Queer lobby made it a matter of political correctness rather than safety concerns for the major outbreak that was happening. When the AIDS virus was located at the time to the homosexual males, the Queer lobby did not want to have it at their doorstep, however, they were first in line to have research funding. There were still many questions about transmission, but we KNEW it took more than casual contact and required bodily fluids to be exchanged. We were well into the AIDS Crisis by '92. Yes, some folks sadly had those thoughts that were based out of fear and suvival. While I wasnt' one of those - those that did - did so in the mid to late 80's. I'd say "86 is when that sort of opinion peaked.

Perez, yes, he is putting his foot in his mouth. He is crazy. He says outrageous stuff. But the ultra conservative Evangelical "Christians" love him. He is the only reason they will ever vote this year. We have seen what that kind of religious extremist has done to our country, so you should worry.
