Paul talks Pee-Wee

There have long been talks about a new Pee-Wee Herman film. There's even a listing on the Internet Movie Database.

But, not too long ago, Pee-Wee creator Paul Reubens said that he was kidding and didn't plan on making another Herman film.

Well, he's changed his mind!

In this new interview the veteran funnyman sounds assured in his conviction of making another Pee-Wee movie. Yay!!!

"I feel like the time is really ripe right now," Reubens says. "A lot of the kids who grew up with the show are young adults. The college kids are middle-aged adults. I feel like I have enough of a built-in audience to make back an investment."

Reubens said he has two Pee-wee scripts ready to go. One is an extension of the famed TV show, "Pee-wee's Playhouse," only this story would take Pee-wee and his friends outside the house for the first time. "We never really went out into what we call puppet land," Reubens recalled of the show. "And this [film] takes place out of the playhouse. I think there are one or two scenes in the playhouse in the beginning. Basically it's all in a fantasy land," he said. "It's like a 'Wizard of Oz,' H.R. Pufnstuf epic adventure story." Reubens added that the story would bring back all of the original characters from the playhouse — live-action and puppets alike.

The other Pee-wee film, which Reubens called "the dark Pee Wee movie," is "not really very dark" and certainly not intended to be an R-rated film. "It's basically the story of Pee-wee Herman becoming famous as a singer," he explained. "He has a hit single and gets brought out to Hollywood to make musical movies, kind of like they did with Elvis. It all kind of goes downhill from there for Pee-wee. He turns into a monster. He does everything wrong and becomes a big jerk." Though he described it as a movie "about fame," Reubens insisted, "It's not autobiographical."

Though he said he's still likely to play Pee-Wee, Reubens also revealed that he's spoken to Johnny Depp about playing the beloved character.

Pee-wee's Big Adventure director Tim Burton needs to come back and do another Herman film with both Reubens and Depp.

      I think Pee Wee is Paul's character but if anyone could do it Johnny Depp can…I wonder if they will bring back Large Marge…The scary trucker…I remember being scared to death as a kid watching that scene!

      I LOVE PeeWee, his playhouse and his movies! My 19 year old teen and I started watching PeeWee when my son was little, and we still break out PeeWee's Christmas every year! He's a total hoot and a pleasure … nothing like silly, innocent fun!

      I am so down for another Pee-Wee movie! I think Tim Burton would be an amazing director for the movies! Tim Burton is the master of taking something dark but, leaves enough light that it is wonderful. I don't know if I could see Johnny Depp as Pee-Wee but, when he played Willy Wonka he had a Pee-Wee quality to him. Paul R. said he would bring back all of the original characters from the playhouse — live-action and puppets alike. But, I don't think Lawrence Fishburn who played Cowboy Curtis would take such a far step back to get back into those chaps! But, I can't wait to see Jombie and those Skat Cat puppets! That blue scat dog was out of sight!! Come back to us Pee-Wee our world needs a good laugh!!

      Pee-Wee's Playhouse was my ABSOLUTE favorite show as a kid! My mother and I watched him religiously every Saturday for 5 years! Paul brought joy to SO many kids and parents alike. He's a genius! If this movie comes out, I will be first in line!!! Love you Pee-Wee!!!!!

      Johnny has said he'll never make a movie his kids can't watch, and personally I don't think he'd be that excited about playing Pee-Wee. Either make it the original or don't make it at all. However if Johnny does get the role, it'll be sexy…but creepy, just like Willy Wonka was.

      I loved watching PeeWee's show when I was a kid and I was totally annoyed when it got cancelled over that stupid crap. Whatever he did in his personal life did not have anything to do with the show so i felt like there was no need for his show to be cancelled.

      I'd love if he did another movie or something and certainly if Johnny Depp was involved then it would be even more perfect! It'd be hilarious to see them in a movie together (aside from "Blow"). I would definitely be a must-see film!
