Socialized healthcare is NOT the answer & the Canadian healthcare system is crumbling from socialization. Stop promoting socialization of healthcare. Affordable healthcare is an issue in this country, but the federal government isn't going to help us. Just look at how well FEMA handled Katrina, you think they'll take care of your basic medical needs?

    24. B says – reply to this

      24

I live in Canada and our healthcare is paid for here, its great. But i certainly feel for the people in the states who are broke and dying because some people are too stubborn to do anythiing about it. I totally support this message and want to help! Do it!!! Its true, divided we fail!

    25. JenB says – reply to this

      25

Socailized healthcare is not the answer. Do you really want the federal government in charge of our healthcare? Why? They did so well with social security? They did such a good job with FEMA and Katrina? Please! Affordable healthcare is a problem but socializing it is NOT the solution.

Re: mrmcflex – they obviously do. although some, i'm sure are doing it for publicity, it's excellent to see them caring about an issue that really doesn't affect them too much but that's causing such a huge problem for the general population. so even if they don't care, they're making it look like they do, so good for them, its about time someone takes action with this problem

    31. Instigator says – reply to this

Why don't you all just move here to Canada. Free healthcare (ok thru taxes) but still. Even the hobo on the street can walk into a hospital and get help, I have heard of everyday people in the states who have a heart attack and end up selling their house.
      Sad

      34

I think this is a problem that many Americans are facing today and its time to get things done for the better before it gets any worse. I just saw the movie Sicko and although many might not agree with Michael Moore, some of the issues are still affecting many Americans. It makes me wonder when it will change. By the way, just because you are not affected right now it doesn't mean it will happen to somebody you know. Its time for changes in healthcare and the time is NOW!!!!!

What a bunch of crap! Jerks who think with their star power something good will come of this. Health care improvements will come if and only if supply begins to catch up (and surpass…which will bring down prices!) with demand.

Asking our government to take over this industry is just asking for trouble. Not their province, either.

More doctors, more nurses, more technical experts, more machines, more of everything in the healt care industry…such as competition…like the corner gas station, on every corner! Get it?

Great point, Jen. Unfortunately, bleeding heart liberals - basically all of Hollywood included - will continue to push for the socialization of healthcare.
I would love to know why people think that's the answer? Ask any military personnel or military families that get free healthcare about the quality and care they receive. You'd be surprised as to how crappy it can be.
And seriously, the government has a hard time doing anything withouth screwing it up. Uhhh do you people not remember Katrina?

Health care costs are high due to the fact most Americans do no look after their own health. The food they eat and all the drugs that they take to cover up the concequences of their unhealthy lifestyles. Wake up people! A nonprofit healthcare system can work with competition between nonprofit health care providers and the government.

Socialized healthcare works better than what we have here - just ask Denmark, Austria, or the Netherlands.

    62. anniemal says – reply to this

      62

Health care for everyone sounds like a nice idea.
Then look at your paycheck and see the increased taxes taken out.
Then ask where the money is going - to keep people on life support for years, to pay for drug addicts who overdosed, to fix gunshot wounds of gang members, to pay for cancer treatments of people who smoked cigarettes for decades, to pay for abortions of people who didn't use condoms…. yea, that's where i want my money going.

      63

how about instead of doin sum stupid PSA all of them donate 15% of their yearly income to people who dont have health insurance instead of buyin big stupid expensive homes that they already have 4 of TALK IS CHEAP

    64. anniemal says – reply to this

      64

      To Mark #64,
I have family in the Netherlands, and my boyfriend is Dutch. I can tell you numerous stories about family members who had to wait years for essential services, I can tell you about my youngest cousin whose disease went undiagnosed for over two years of his life, and I can tell you about my uncle who was forced out of hospital because they didn't have room for him and he then died on his own couch from a heart attack two days later.
Health care from the government sounds like a nice idea. But think about every government run program you experience. Think about the last time you were at the DMV. Is that how you want your next visit to the doctor be? I don't think so.

    65. Donkeyphant says – reply to this

      65

No one mentions socialized healcare in this message. That isn't at all what this is about. It's about putting all the partisan bull aside and working together to find viable solutions on healthcare and financial security - right now. While politicians are stuck in age-old red vs. blue battles, we the people suffer. I'm ready to start holding these fools accountable for real change, who's down?

    66. etherine says – reply to this

      66

      Re: Give me a break

Very true about the military healthcare. My husband is a Marine and while I've received some decent BASIC care from Naval hospitals, overall it has been horrible and demoralizing. Especially at the Army base we are at now. It may be free, but we have had to fight for anything above and beyond, "drink fluids and take Motrin". Choosing the plan that allows for more choice (civilian healthcare) costs a pretty penny.

Be careful what you wish for. The healthcare programs that many of the politicians want will allow employers to water down or cut out their benefits. Guess who will be stuck with higher premiums? YOU. The government is not looking to pick up the tab for you - although they will make you think that to get your vote. They want to force people who do not have benefits through an employer to pay an "affordable" healthcare premium and they will fine you if you do not.

Yeah, great idea socialize medicine. As a medical student I can tell you first hand that Canada health care system is seriously flawed. If you want to wait until one of your organs explodes to see a Dr. than great. If you want your paychecks to be raped so a drug addict can get his methodone than great. If you want to see what kind of care you get when your janitors and doctors make the same salary, than great. Brave New World people…Remember that book? I go to school with ALOT of Canadians who do NOT agree with socialized medicine. These Hollyweird stars are not affected by this. They pay for private care. They do not live in the real world!

I'll echo what a few (sane) others have said so far…Socialized medicine is NOT the answer. Yeah, in theory it sounds just wonderful, but seriously folks…let's think about this critically. Is anything controlled by the government truly efficient or successful? No…you have total bureaucracy and red tape as far as the eye can see. FEMA, Medicare/Medicaid, the IRS…and those are just off the top of my head. Healthcare should be privatized, just like car, life, or homeowners insurance. That way, people wouldn't be dependent on their employer, and could choose a plan that is right for their current needs and their budget. Healthcare providers would compete for business, and prices and accessiblity would stay reasonable. The opposite would happen if socialized medicine is enacted (God forbid). As the PSA said, this shouldn't be a political issue…but seriously, kids…before you give into the Kumbaya-hype, really, REALLY think about it.

One of the reasons doctors are so expensive in the US is malpractice insurance. Our nation is so litigious these days that it costs hundreds of thousands of dollars just to have proper insurance. And it's my understanding that doctors in Canada don't make enough to even pay off their med school loans and there's a shortage of doctors up there. I think a gov't. healthcare system is a slippery slope and before everyone embraces it, keep your eyes wide open and ask questions.

Folks: The socialized-medicine debate is missing the point here. Divided We Fail doesn't call for a government-run health care system — it says we're spending twice as much for our health care as any other developed nation and getting worse outcomes on some things. It says we could improve access to affordable, quality health care.

For the bucks we're paying — two trillion a year — shouldn't we get the best of everything?

Every single person out there who says U.S. health care can never be improved one iota, please raise your hands. Thank you. We all agree — this system can be improved.

But the politicans aren't about improving it - they are about beating the tar out of each other to gain power rather than beating the tar out of our problems.

Canadian healthcare doesn't seem so great to me. My sister in law moved to Canada last year. She had to wait for months for surgery to remove a tumor on her fallopian tubes…and when they FINALLY did it they snipped one of her fallopian tubes which lessens her chances of having any children. Some healthcare system. I think I'll stick to the one we have in the US thanks. These celebrities think they know it all but they just don't. They should stick to what they know best, hitting their mark and looking pretty.

Healthcare would be so much cheaper if doctor's weren't so overpaid. And the fact that hospitals charge so much is insane.

free health care from the government sounds lovely, doesn't it?
yea, guess what? it's too good to be true.
you're paycheck will be swallowed by more of the government's hand and you will get even worse health care for it.
think about your hard-earned money going towards drug users, people who ate their way to obesity, smokers who now have cancer from years of their dirty habits, and abortions going to couples who couldn't use a condom.
this is america. where you work your ass off and get what you deserve. not work your ass off so some dumbass who made bad health choices reaps the benefit.
