Despite mostly negative reviews, Will Smith's latest film, I Am Legend, is raking it in at the U.S. box office this weekend.
The movie made a very impressive $30 million on Friday and is expected to take in $80 million total this weekend.
The film's take is good enough for the biggest December opening ever.
Will Smith is the new king of the box office!
Also opening this weekend was the new Chipmunks movie, which also performed much better than expected. That film should take in about $40 million, almost double what had been predicted.
And, finally, Nicole Kidman's latest disaster, Golden Compass, completely disintegrated at the box office this past weekend.
It'll be interesting to see if she can command a hefty payday for her next film. She's movie poison!

I just saw this movie last night and it is AMAZING. From the second it starts until the very end you are gripping the seat; it is so intense. In fact the only time you will move is when you jump or flinch in fear…and it's got plenty of those moments. No watch checking either– ya know when you get so bored you check to see how long is left in the movie–none of that. He's got to win awards for this movie, his acting is incredible. I would definitely make it a must see this season. If you're into movies that leave you with "oh…my…god…" when it ends…this is your movie!

I saw the movie and i think it was good but kind of disappointing. I would have liked the story to go more into the "monster humans" but Will was great. The story was just a little empty. It was missing something….
I think the only reason its doing so good is because you go expecting a big budget special affects story & it wasnt that. So you get stuck their as did I. This movie is such a stinker.
The first 15 minutes is so slow & boring, The cutting back and forth to tell the story feels out of place, the actual plot has been done ever heard of Resident Evil a virus that gets out of control & makes humans mad with a cure at the end, It was so obvious the director let Will Smith have way to much input in shooting the movie all the akward moments listening to regae, talking to manequins, his doing pull ups for like a full minute just to show him bare chested, Then the most ridiculous part the fact that this brillant scientist cant keep his shit together for 3 years befor becoming obsessed with his stupid manequins yet hes smart enough to make traps & find cures. His being obsessed with the manequin kills his dog. Which was the only likeable character.

Who else is poison? Santa Angelina, Russell Crowe, Jessica Alba, John Travolta. Big stars don't open movies anymore. They have to be in good films for people to actually want to see them. You know what movie is going to rock this weekend? Juno, a small indie flick with great performances and interesting story line. People are tired of seeing crap built around "stars."
I would also point out that Will Smith has had quite a string of flops to his credit. I Robot was a terrible failure as was Hitch, The Legend of Baggar Vance, Bad Boys 2, Men In Black 2, etc.
The movie was soooo sick! Definitely worth checking out.

Why do you keep saying the Golden Compass was a disaster?? It came in number 1 last weekend and has gotten nothing but GREAT reviews.
About half of the audience just went to either see the NEW trailer to The Dark Knight in regular theaters or the IMAX theater to see the 9 minute prologue of The Dark Knight.

Well, I have to say I'm no Nicole fan by far, but it wasn't her fault the movie didn't do well. I saw the flick yesterday and as much as I hate to admit it, Nic was the best thing in it. Sure the movie is pretty to watch but other than that, it just feels… empty.
I saw the movie yesterday afternoon with my boyfriend, and it wasn't my first choice of movie (I'm not an action fan), but I'm really glad I went. Will Smith is such an excellent actor. He's a good enough actor that when you watch him now you don't think, Man, he was the Fresh Prince and that's all he'll ever be. The film was really suspenseful, and there were a few moments in the film that made me jump enough that I thought that I was going to go into labor! It was cute to see Smith's daughter Willow in the film, his family man persona adds to his sexiness! Overall, I thought that it was an excellent movie, and I'm glad to see that it did so well!

I Am Legend had a lot of mixed reviews. I personally saw it last night, and although not completely disappointed, was not impressed either. There was a lot that could have been explored that wasn't, and there was some points where it was just plain boring. Oh well, still adore Will Smith, he did a great job.

1. The Golden Compass was #1 in Canada on its opening weekend. It's just your terrible country that doesn't like it.
2. Nicole Kidman is a wonderful actress, gorgeous, actually seems fairly sane and normal, doesn't broadcast her life for public consumption or beg the paparazzi to follow her around, stood by her husband when he went through rehab soon after getting married, had the sense to get the hell away from Tom Cruise before he went bonkers, etc. etc.
In short there is no reason to be so hateful towards her. Just stick to kissing Paris' diseased ass and leave Nicole alone. She has more class in one little finger than you have in your entire (morbidly obese) body.
The movie was much better than I expected it to be. I read the book about 10 years ago and the book was written in 1954. Some of the original story remained but much was changed to entertain modern audiences - I am sure of it. I could have done without the Shelby sports car. Smith did a good job of capturing the strain of isolation. He did go into "WILL SMITH MODE" a few times which was annoying.
I encourage people to read Matheson's book. Read it alone at night that will give the full affect.
The main reason this movie did so well was the Batman trailer before it. I saw it at an IMAX theater and it was AWESOME.

Nicole hasn't always been BOP how quickly we seem to have forgotten about the handsome grosses of Moulin Rouge and Batman Forever. Some of you who are defending I Am Legend are must've been on crack or some other destructive substance that warped your perspective when you saw it though because the movie is god-awful despite Will's good performance.

not sure why you are saying it is getting mostly negative reviews. it has a 60% rotten tomatoes rating, which is pretty good, and a 78% rating on imdb.com. personally, i think it looks terrible, but if you are going to make a statement, make it an accurate one.

Saw the movie and have to say "The Omega Man" (the original) was better, and I hated Chalton Heston. Wish I had gone to see The Golden Compas instead.

I'd spent 2 years living there and ALL the people did was talk about America, their celebrities, their technology, their shopping, blah, blah, blah. I happen to like Paris far better than both though.

Beowulf Sucks, not the Golden Compass
saw the movie but could not stand the boredom … i could not believe how bad this movie could be … i was expecting so much more … especially because will smith was the main and probably only actor in the movie … what a waste!!! so i went to the box office and requested a refund. i then purchased a ticket to see "atonement" which was totally engaging and captivating. loved the acting of the main stars; i can see why it got so many nominations. highly recommend it!!!
I guess Perez is knocking down Nicole because he knows he'll get a lot of reactions. Yes, she's done some stinkers but she's made some good ones too (that's pretty much true of every A-List actress in Hollywood). Nicole, Reese, Angelina, Cameron, & others have all had box-office disappointments lately, but Perez seems to single out Nicole. I think Nicole is one of the most daring actress out there. The results have not always been good, but I admire her for taking chances. For example, her character in 'Margot at the Wedding' is very unlikable but she took the role to flex her acting muscles.
I think she's in a transition point in her career. The big money & commercial films are now dwindling down for her (which is true for most actresses over-40), but I think she's on her way to becoming a great character actress as she gets older. She definitely won't have to worry about money as those commercial films made her rich.
LOVE WILL but movie stinks. Stay home and rent a Will movie.
