It Was Drugs!

The toxicology results are in and Hawthorne Heights guitarist Casey Calvert died of a drug overdose, a medical examiner has revealed.

At the time of Calvert's death, Hawthorne Heights released a statement saying, "We can say with absolute certainty that he was not doing anything illegal."

His death has now been ruled an accident caused by the combined effects of opiates and the antidepressant citalopram and the anti-anxiety medication clonozepam.

Perez, it wasn't an overdose, it was synergy between them, let me break it to you.

Those 3 medications (they say he was prescribed Vicodin for a root canal), cause a depression of your nervous system, and your respiratory muscles get weak, so I asume he started breathing heavy and then died.

But how could you say: IT WAS DRUGS! A DRUG OVERDOSE!
man, they weren't illegal drugs, he needed them, he needed all three of them.

They NEVER said it was an OVERDOSE.
you don't need an overdose for them to react together.

    Re: natalie

AGAIN, it wasn't an overdose, it was synergy, if you don't know anything about medicine, please don't try to make it look as a fact. I'm a doctor, and you're not.

  3. kp says – reply to this

lmao they were fucking prescribed, it wasn't illegal. first off, his wife was a school teacher so why would he do anything illegal?

the guy died. stop arguing as to how.

Re: A – To say that perez even practices "journalism" is a joke. I agree that this was a very low blow to the family and friends of a musician, especially when all of the details are not released yet, but if you want real, unbiased, fair news…this should definitely not be one of your choices.

  8. cake says – reply to this

A horrible accidental death. I feel sad for Casey, his family and friends.

    Re: kzi
Thanks for posting that, I was just about to.

Casey has always been battling depression. The fact that people would make all kinds of assumptions that the abuse was intentional is fucking ridiculous.

I hate Hawthorne Height, but this is aweful.

wow , i used to like HH ages ago, now I don't, but the other day I thought" I wonder what happened to that band?"…weird

  15. shandiRW says – reply to this

wow, thats quite the mixture there, sounds like he was pretty messed up, RIP

  16. Meg says – reply to this

It really saddens me that you would make it seem like he was doing something wrong. Casey's doctor prescribed Vicodin after a root canal unaware of the other meds he was taking. Perhaps you should clarify that and possibly grab the statement drummer, Eron Bucciarelli gave to absolutepunk.net on the matter.

  17. kypre says – reply to this

    Re: Alexandra

right. because depressed people NEVER abuse drugs, hmm?

i don't doubt that he realized he could get a nice buzz off clonazepam and vicodin, and took one too many.

and for all you people saying "OMG perez, how dare you call it an overdose, you don't know what you're talking about!!" read the linked article. it specifically mentions that the death was an overdose.

and anyone who says "it wasn't an overdose!! he just took too much and all combined, it made him stop breathing!!"- what the fuck do you think an opiate overdose is??? that is precisely what happens when you take too much of a depressant. it shuts down your respiratory system. that is the definition of an overdose.

  18. natalie says – reply to this

he wouldnt have been prescribed all those meds together if they could easily cause an overdose. he was clearly a DRUG ADDICT PRESCRIPTION MED ABUSER who took a little more that time to keep getting the high he was always after. the band is a horrible influence on our kids today anyway. ofcourse what happened to him is terrible but he did it to himself. but just because the drugs were prescribed doesnt mean he wasnt a drug addict. Hydrocodone the opiate ingredient in Vicodin is like synthetic heroin. Taking an extra 2, 3 , 4… with those other drugs he was on wouldnt have killed him. if that was the case we would have MANY overdoses a day. be realistic. the guy was a pharm junkie and if anything good is to come of his life it should be to make people realize pharmaceuticals are much more harmful and addictive than a lot of street drugs

  19. rxachel says – reply to this

I am a pharmacist. And there is a SERIOUS drug interaction between Opiates (pain medications) which for a root canal, was most likely vicodin (hydrocodone/acetaminophen) or percocet (oxycodone/acetaminophen), and benzodiazepines like clonazepam (Klonopin). They both cause respiratory depression. Clonazepam is one of the stronger benzopdiazepines, and depending on the dose he was prescribed, it might not have taken much of the vicodin to depress his breathing enough to kill him. One of the problems with being on tour, is multiple doctors, and multiple pharmacies, meaning probably neither health care provider new he was taking both medications. This could have been avoided had he been told of this drug interaction and the dose of either the drugs been reduced.

PS. don't be assholes and make assumptions based on sterotypes or looks.

He was taking his prescribed medication.

I say pharmecutial lawsuit for lack of better advice that lead to death.

  23. jasfdjjjjjj says – reply to this

ok people, they were perscribed. read the smart people's comments, and don't judge everything on what PEREZ HILTON says. he doesn't know everything, k?

also, for those of you who say's he's obbbbviously on drugs, "just look at the picture!!!111", well maybe you should think about it. ITS A PICTURE. he could've been like, opening his mouth or something. gosh… its annoying how easy it is to convince someone a celebrity is on drugs just because theres a picture of them bliinking or something. everyone has a bad picture moment sometime in their life. especially when the photographers are following them and taking pictures of every second of their life.

  24. Molly says – reply to this

So sad. I'm very surprised, but also not surprised at all (if that makes any sense).

  25. smarter than you says – reply to this

Just because he had a prescription for all three of those drugs which could cause an interaction when taken together, doesn't mean he was a drug abuser. The doctor who performed his root canal might not have been aware of his Rx's for clonazepam and the antidepressant. It happens more than you think. Furthermore, some meds interact numerous other meds, and believe it or not, the doctor is not always aware. Unless he or she cross-checks everything with a drug reference, prescriptions may be written that carry deadly potential interactions with other medications.

And about the difference between opiates and opioids, there isn't really any. The only difference is that opiates are derived from the opium plant, whereas opioids are synthetic versions of opiates. Both have the same effects on your body and brain. Vicodin is technically an opioid not an opiate, but it doesn't really matter. People often use the terms interchangeably.

  26. tracy says – reply to this

yeah, people should know that combining opiates and benzos is VERY dangerous, potentially lethal.

  27. Sarah says – reply to this

God, make him sound like a drug abuser, why dontcha?
    It was an accident, sheesh.

  28. lindsey says – reply to this

This is so friggen disrespectful. It's not even funny.

  29. Rebel in GA says – reply to this

All of those drugs are available legally. And Daniel Smith ingested Methadone (Opiate & CNS depressant), with 2 Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, which would have been enough to shut down his brain's CNS. This guitarist used Benzodiazepenes & Opiates and simply forgot to breath a la Jimi Handrix, who died of Barbiturates.

PS Cobain was on benzodiazapenes (Rhohypnol), Herion AND Methadone (he'd just left rehab in LA when he offed himself.

    Withdrawal SUCKS

  30. tanner44 says – reply to this

you need to fuckin get this sorted out.
every drug he took was legal.
the so called opiate, was vicodan, taken because of a root canal.
you make him seem like a total druggie with this.
basically lost all respect with this post from perez, not that one person matters.
but it is clear you dont investigate anything before posting.

  33. Stephanie says – reply to this

    Re: lily
I agree. Don't talk shit about him if you don't know him. I don't care if you hate his band or whatever, but show some fucking respect. Just because he was on anti-depressants, doesn't mean he would overdose and kill himself. He was an avid member of "TO WRITE LOVE ON HER ARMS" (an anti-suicide campaign) because he knew what kids were going through when they were depressed, since he went through it personally. All he wanted to do in life was to spread his love of music. He didn't give a shit if anyone didn't like how he screamed or no one liked his band. He did what he loved doing. That is what life is really all about. And all of you fuckers who talk about that photo; not all of his photos look like that. Perez just posted that just so all the dumbasses on here could think that he always looked like that. And stereotyping him just because he is in a rock band, is so fucking low. That's like me saying that Perez is going to die of AIDS or obesity.

Wow, seriously guys…those "FUCKING EMO, GOOD HE'S DEAD" comments are seriously unecessary. Show some respect for his band members, his wife, friends and family. If you didn't like him personally or his band, Hey that's cool! but, don't be an asshole.
Oh yeah, and they did release that statement because it is true… He was not doing anything illegal, he was just strugling with depression and well, accidents happen. May he rest in peace.

& everyone else needs to grow the fuck up.

  37. gumby07 says – reply to this

who ever thinks this actually was drugs is full of shit.
I actually got to meet the guy in person several times.
He was an animal activist and even supported funds, charities, and organizations against self abuse towards depression.
He would never do anything like that.
btw, who ever said the "good riddance, fucking emo" comment, I hope I ever get the chance to meet you, cause I'll fucking cut YOUR wrists and black your eyes. This whole thing is stupid. I don't have anything against perez, but he's wrong about casey calvert.

  38. Amanda says – reply to this

This was not on purpose whatsoever.
Casey fought battles with depression in his life and had it under control with medication.
Taking medication for his root canal made a bad mix.
    It was totally accidental. RIP.
He was one the nicest people I have ever met.

  39. Courtney says – reply to this

I have to say Perez I thought you were a better person than this. I normally never have anything negative to say about you. But this post has really made me lose respect for you. I mean seriously where is your respect for his family friends & fans? As everyone else has stated those were prescription drugs therefore they were not illegal. It's sad how many ignorant people there are in this world just because he was in a band doesn't make him a drug abuser. Anyone who has left a negative comment on this post should be ashamed. How would you feel if you lost someone you loved and people made such negative comments about them. As a huge fan of Hawthorne Heights his death hit me pretty hard & I will carry it with me always. I met Casey this summer and he was one of the most amazing people I have ever talked to. He cared about his fans and always took time out to meet them. Which is more than most musicians do. I know in my heart that he wasn't a drug abuser & I shouldn't waste my time replying to you idiots. However I knew I would feel better getting all my thoughts out. Casey was a talented and wonderful person & he will be greatly missed. He left an imprint in the hearts of alot of us & he will be remembered in a positve way. If you have never heard of him you have no right to be commenting in the first place.
    R.I.P Casey

He simply took two medications that he did not know could be mixed. The most harmful thing Casey ever did was drink. Grow up.

I seriously think it's a shame you would post a story like this. The true information is clearly available to you and yet you choose to present a negative spin on this person's life.
Casey Calvert suffered from depression. Call him emo or whatever you'd like, but the fact of the matter is that his life was one of many struggles, which everyone can relate to. What made Casey different was his spirit and drive to make sure other people like himself never had to feel alone in their pain. He was deeply involved with To Write Love On Her Arms (www.twloha.com) which provides support for people who are battling issues like substance abuse and depression.
The truth is that he was no Britney Spears or Amy Winehouse, he was actually contributing to society.
Casey's life should not be made a mockery of just because you choose entertainment over dignity. He led a good life and tried to make a difference. I hate that this is how people will remember him now.
    Bravo Perez.

The medical examiner's office ruled his death a drug OVERDOSE.
It's sad and I'm sure he was a nice guy, but no need to defend his actions. Maybe, some people can learn from this tragedy.
Even nice guys can abuse legal drugs.
Is it considered illegal if he ingested a higher dose than the doc ordered?

Many of you are moronic and stereotypical- one doesn't take drugs just from being a band mate.

It's a loss of a talent and a huge source of grief, so stop being disrespectful of the dead, please.

There isn't a need to call someone a "dickhead" or a "loser" because you disagree with their statement. Use some common intelligence, fuck.

He was prescribed those medications and it was a pad mix [just as much as that is a horrid picture of him].

To those who said he was likely on crack or meth: it would have come up in the toxicology report, you dunces.

    Otherwise, rest in peace!

  57. Kent Brockman says – reply to this

And another thing…To all those saying 'I loved this man' and other tripe..Of course you do..You'd never proclaim this publicly in such a way before he OD'd…Know why? Because, as with anything…What people want most are the things that they can't freely access anymore..Tupac, Joplin, Elvis, on and on.

Give it a rest already. This nit-wit could scream, whoop-de do da day. He clearly was abusing his medications, that is, if they were all even prescribed to him. Give it a rest, you plastic, phoney fucks.

What's disgusting are the money hungry vultures that automatically want to sue the doctor or pharmacist!
They perscribe low doses of percs or vicodin to take the edge of the pain after a surgery. Why are they at fault when a patient over medicates?
If this dude didn't inform them that he was also on benzos, that is just plain foolish. There is a reason why medical professionals ask if you're on any other meds.
My condolences to friends and family.

  60. hk says – reply to this

the "opiate" is vicodin for a root canal he had done before tour. he was not doing anything illegal. the combination of vicodin and his prescriptions killed him.

  62. Maygun says – reply to this

You all say he was doing drugs…. well, who the fuck doesnt take anti-depressants these days (FYI prescribed meds ARE NOT illegal). Are you going to hold that against him and say he was scum because he took medicines for that and anxiety? It also said he was taking the vicodin for a recent root canal prcedure he had done. For all you retards out there that can't put 2 and 2 together. He screamed in a band, it was the first show of the tour and that night after the show he was probably in pain and being naive, he probably took a little more vicodin than he was supposed to. Now there is a band left without a brother and a wife withour her husband. How dare you make these speculations and try to tarnish a sweet and innocent person's legacy. Half of you out there probably have loved ones that take these meds themselves, so it could happen to anyone. Think about that before you go spouting off your bullshit in forums next time.

  63. Alison says – reply to this

Thats not true. it was not a drug overdose. There were opiates found in his blood streem but this was due to Vicodin, which he was prescribed for dental work he had done. He was not a drug user in any way. He has battled depression his whole life. Please do not remember him this way, he was very much against drugs. be respectful perez, you have to keep in mind this is someones son, he has a family who cares about him. grow up.

  64. justin says – reply to this

the reason Casey was using all this drugs. one for a root canal he got a few days/weeks (not sure) and the other for his problems. The doctors knowingly that he was on other preciption drugs put him on more, and this is not the first time something like this has happened. I love perez Hilton, but on this one i have to say it's only because he's on a band, they're twisting the story. I knew casey personally and he would never do that to himself, specially knowing the consiquences. He was an awesome person. made everyone's day. When I found out casey died was the next day and my whole weekend and week was ruined. I work for Hawthorne Heights & thier label. and knowing him he would never do that. So all you fuckers saying shit. OHH LOOK AT HIM LOOK AT HIS EYES!!!

you have to think, apperances fool people. Don't fucking be like oh that's not true cause all of you fuckers out thier have judged a book by it's cover, and have been wrong. Same with you guys are wiht Casey. He was probably the most outgoing, amazing guy ever and let his soul rest in peace!!

I am a huge supporter of this group and any band that supports them, they have done so much for so many people.

He WASN'T doing illegal drugs you retards. The OPIATE was sleeping pills. It was accidental and not like he OD'ed on heroine or anything. F**k you Perez for taking things out of proportion. Especially when it has to do with a death. This really pisses me off that people would pin drugs on his death especially when he never drank, did drugs, and was a vegan.

  75. pooltop says – reply to this

'CAN 'STRAIGHT EDGERS' claim to be DRUG FREE when they obviously arent? You can take all kinds of OTC pain killers that are NOT opiates and get nearly the same effect. I had 4 wisdom teeth extracted and never used a single OPIATE. Whether they're legal or not, they are DRUGS. Plain and simple. And can you be 'DRUG FREE' if you're taking 2 pharmaecuticals? Drugs are drugs. Some people abuse them, some don't…but even when they're 'legal' and 'prescribed' they are DRUGS. You are not DRUG FREE if you take opiates, PURE AND SIMPLE. There are millions of drug addicts HOOKED on what you are all referring to 'legal drugs' and you can get just as high on 'legal drugs' as you can 'illegal drugs.' Opiates, benzos and antidepressants are way more deadly than pot.
But this is a reminder: DRUGS ARE DRUGS. YOU CAN'T BE 'DRUG FREE' AND HAVE A MOUTH FULL OF VICODIN BECAUSE THERE ARE A TON OF NON OPIATE DRUGS TO RELIEVE PAIN. And anyone taking kalonopin and viocodin together is not DRUG FREE. That's a coctail to get high, whether it was intended or not.

all of you screaming "he's not a junkie!! he was prescribed these!!" are just making me roll over with laughter.

when i was a junkie, guess what i did to boost my high? i went and said i had "anxiety problems" to get a clonazepam script. i took said clonazepam about 20 min before shooting up, and it turned shitty dope into good dope. does that mean this was okay, because the clonazepam was prescribed?? absolutely not!! also, the only times i ever OD'd, i had taken clonazepam prior to shooting up. in case you idiots didn't get it the first time around: clonazepam gets you HIGH. how the fuck do you think it controls "anxiety"?? by getting you fucking high and zonked out. make no mistake- if this guy was taking benzos and vicodin combined (even if it was for pain) he was more certainly not a straight-edge. he may not have been your typical street junkie, but there was something fucked up going on here. why didn't he tell his doc he was taking benzos? because he knew he wouldn't get vicodin. and lying (even by omission) in order to get drugs is 100% junkie behaviour!!!!

exactly ur statement is uncalled for….. I'm sure this guy was a good person but he obviously was abusing drugs. I have proof he OD. What's yours? No one is saying he deserved it cause he didn't but get your facts straight. And Perez is brilliant I wish I would have thought of this. Besides he just says what everyone is thinking.

Normally I love you. Today I am just disappointed.

Please research the details before you sensationalize, especially when someone has died. I was told by a friend of theirs that Casey had a root canal done and was given Vicodin. He had been on treatment with antidepressants and another medication for anxiety. All of his medications were prescribed to him, but for whatever unfortunate reason, the mix was lethal. Please retract or clarify your post. This guy was the nicest person you could ever hope to meet and he WAS NOT doing illegal drugs, that's one of the reasons his death was such a shock. Don't make him out to be a loser when you don't tell the full story.

    Re: Salindil
    You're kidding me, right?
Regardless of who he was or what you ever so kindly labeled him as, he was still someone that others cared about.
You're rude and insensitive; how do you think his wife feels?
He wasn't a 'fucking emo' to her.
Honestly, keep your criticism to yourself.
You wouldn't like it one bit if one of your loved ones' death was being criticized and exploited, now would you?

Being a pharmacist and all I have correct the Clonazepam! I don't blame him for being depressed and anxious, I'd be too if I was fug like that, sorry..

You know what? This guy is not even famous. Just leave him alone and stick to celebs. His family is the one who has to deal with the fact he died by using drugs….once again, perez is using someones death to earn a buck.

you know perez, i love your site and all but this is just too much. this kid fucking DIED and you just can't stop pointing out how it was drugs, first of all that's really a misleading headline because it wasn't illegal drugs at all, you could've reported this story in SUCH a better way. you're a fucking dick

oh mannn. the drugs were legal. it could have been an ACCIDENT. i hate that people always judge musicians. the second people heard he was dead, they were like, "OD." UGH.

his doctor would have told him not to take the drugs together. and it says on the box not to take certain drugs with certain things. you don't know if it was intentional. you weren't inside his head. what we do know is he died from an overdose.

  96. john says – reply to this

youre a piece of shit. seriously, how dare you automatically go off and make him seem like a drug addict, everything he was taking was legal and prescribed by a doctor, read every other news article from people who know what they are actually talking about and youll find that he combined vicodin (the opiate) that was prescribed for him from a root canal he had, with antidepressants and unfortunatly the combination killed him, casey wasnt a drug addict, he was an amazing person and you should be ashamed for making him out to be anything else. what the fuck are you thinking. get a life.

Perez, I love you, but Casey was a good person. He doesn't deserve to be ridiculed and insulted on the internet. If he was Anna Nicole I wouldn't be complaining. But come on, a harmless musician? Not cool. Have some respect for the dead.

"he was using antidepressants for depression, and vicodin for root canal surgery. i fucking hate speculation that is so negative. show some respect."

    Exactly what Amber said.

Any of you that are laughing and saying he was a druggie should shut the fuck up and grow. You ignorant pieces of shit. Have some respect. Learn the fucking facts before opening your mouths.Re: kzi

Wow, this country is sad… everyone defends fuck ups like Britney Spears, but when there is an explanation of why he OD'd, the pain med for his root canal, everyone calls him a drug addict. Come on people, Doctors and people do make mistakes by not telling people or finding out what medications cannot be taken together. I luckily noticed a med perscribed to me I noticed could not be mixed with one I was taking because an idiot doctor didn't pay attention. Many people don't look, usually I don't.
Not everyone in bands do drugs, many are clean, specially in that scene. I know many guys in bands that do not do drugs or drink alcohol. And just because some of you abuse these drugs does not mean everyne does, these medications do have real diseases that they are taken for. This just teaches us that medications given to people every day are DANGEROUS, whether they are abused or used legally.
