Pregnant…..and Smoking!

Filed under: Anglophilia > Lily Allen

lils.jpg

Look at that lil' baby bump!

Yup, Lily Allen is pregnant. And we hope now that she's found out the "happy" news that she's going to give up smoking.

There she is, sucking on a cancer stick, on December 4th.

Hope her baby is born without any birth defects!

Most of us babyboomers were born to moms who smoked while pregnant and the entire time we were kids, bottle fed us, started giving us solid foods well before five (or whatever weird age it is now), potty trained us at a year and a half, never laid eyes on a car seat and let us (gasp) walk to school by ourselves or ride our bikes without helmets. We're all here. We're all fine. Heck, I don't even smoke. No, smoking probably isn't a good thing for her or her baby, but I think everyone needs to relax a bit. They'll be fine.

    23. nietle says – reply to this

      23

No one should smoke. I watched my mother waste away for a year and die at 55 from smoking. How could anyone not realize that sucking in smoke and chemicals into your lungs is horrible for you? Unfortunately, my mother grew up in the generation where everyone smoked and you smoked everywhere and there were commercials and celebrities touting how great smoking is. Don't smoke, pregnant or not.

She is at risk for a stillborn baby, for her child to have breathing problems (asthma, bronchitis, ect) and her child will be more susceptible to SIDS( sudden infant death syndrome, birth - 2 months most at risk, but could happen up to 2 years)…. it's scary, I smoked through half my pregnancy with my second child, he is 3 and perfectly fine… but it's just way too risky. Congratulations, but please stop smoking

yea but today is a totally different world, The cars aren't huge boats like they used to be, they are tin cans. And kids start eating solid food when they learn to chew 10months-13months. Today's hype about doing it a certain way, is because it's the safest way, it's for optimum results, and the healthiest outcome. Baby boomers also have the worst in ratings for astma, and heart disease

Yes people smoked and drank while pg back in the "good old days" but look at things like still birth, birth defects, early miscarriage, severe allergies, asthma, Autism, low birth weight babies, premature delivery, SIDS & FAS… Most of these things can be directly linked to what you ass holes did in "the good old days".

It's like nails down a chalk board when people chime in and say "look at me, I did x y & z and I'm fine" or…. My kids are fine or my cousin's best friends, wife's, friends, housekeeper is A-OK. The thing is the people who were brain damaged or even KILLED from the practices from those fantastic good old says can't say "Hey, my mom did X Y or Z and now I'm dead".

Pull your over sized head out of the sand or your ass ass… wherever it may be… And swallow your pride and admit that change may be for the greater good sometimes. Stop enabling piece of shit mothers like Lily Allen from doing something we know can so SERIOUS harm to herself and her baby.

Any doctor will tell a woman who smoked before she was pregnant to NOT stop smoking after she becomes pregnant. The doctor will tell the woman to cut back but do not stop under any circumstances. The nicotine withdrawal will affect the fetus more adversely than the smoking. Ask your doctor next time you go for a check up to verify.

If she was aware of her pregnancy than YES, she is absolutely (already!) a bad mother.

Those of you who are condoning her actions need to wake up - even taking the chance to smoke while pregnant is exposing your child to possible FATAL birth defects or diseases.

I'm a 21 year old woman and I can't believe the ignorance and blatant denial of reality stars of my age show. HOPEFULLY, they aren't representative of my age group, because a lot of them are quite… 'special.'

I 100% agree with DumbFuckers. I'm 8 months pregnant, and I smoke. I have done it through out my entire pregnancy. Granted it's not the healthiest habit, but keep in mind, I went from 2 packs a day (before I got preggers and found out) to about 6 or 7 cigrettes a day. I'm 20 years old, and to be COMPLETELY honest, my stepmother smoked all during both her pregnancies with my little sisters, as did my cousin, and both their kids came out perfectly healthy and fine. No breathing problems, no disorders of any kind, no sickness, and no low birth weight. I'm sorry, but none of you are God, so stop trying to act like it, you have not one fucking right to judge women like us. Get the fuck over it. If you don't like it so fucking much, then if you get preggers, don't smoke! And if you have such a problem with pregnant women like Lily, or even me smoking while pregnant, oh well… don't fucking pay one bit of attention to us! And wishing harm on a baby, for what the mother does during her pregnancy that YOU don't agree with, is fucking SICK. You sound more fucked up and horrible than that pregnant mom who smokes! So do your ignorant asses a favor, and SHUT THE FUCK UP! Thank you! God, between bible thumpers and anti smokers I swear! This country is WAY to conservative!

      Re: Hope

Oh, and I would also like to say, Hope, that other people have every right to not only disprove of what you're doing, but to let YOU know that what you're doing is wrong. The reason other people have a right to do this is because we live in a COMMUNITY. In communities, even ones such as ours in America that involves millions upon millions of people, it is in OUR best interest to make sure that everyone born into our community is as healthy as possible. IF your child is sick or has any problems because of your ignorance/negligence, it's probable that COMMUNITY funds such as Medicaid or a type of insurance has to PAY for your child. IF you depend on your community to take care of your potentially ill child, then it would be in your best interest to listen to what the consensus has to say about the HEALTH and WELLBEING of all of our children. It's a shame you're putting your child at risk so you can self gratify… but what can I say? You're obviously a product of not only your mother, but our culture of instant gratification regardless of the consequences…. Such a shame :( .

I have a 19 month old daughter, i smoked while i was pregnant. cut back from a pack a day to about 5-6 a day and that was hellish for me. i did this ON ADVICE from my doctor, who has years of experience and tons of training. she advised me NOT to quit but rather to cut back as much as i could manage, because of the stress it caused when i did quit cold turkey. my blood pressure actually went UP and put me and my baby in MORE danger when i did stop smoking completely.

my daughter is 19 months old, completely normal, ahead of the learning curve, no health issues or birth defects. i'm not saying smoking is healthy, quite the opposite. i'm just saying, if a person is addicted to nicotine, stopping immediately can have more harmful affects on the fetus than cutting back to a few a day.

And for your info, my fiance' is no relation to me. What just because I smoke while pregnant, means I drink too and I got pregnant by a family member? Ha, talk about your uptight conservative steriotyper! Wow, Here's a couple of facts for your dumb fucking ass, I don't drink. Every since I got pregnant, I have stopped drinking, and have done A LOT of changes to my life, I take WAY better care of myself than I use too, that's something I'm really proud of. I'm excited about my son, and I love him already, just because I smoke doesn't change that or make it untrue. You don't know the FIRST fucking thing about me. So I highly suggest taking your fucking head out of your ass, and wake the hell up. The world isn't perfect, and not every woman is a submissive, housewife like you OBVIOUSLY think they should be. Re: M from TorontoRe: George – Smoking stunts the growth of the developing fetus. Nicotine narrows the uterine blood vessels, thus reducing blood flow to the baby. Also, smoking puts the oxygen blocker carbon monoxide into the blood that nourishes baby. Carbon monoxide robs oxygen from the baby. Levels of carbon monoxide have been measured at six to seven times higher in the blood of pregnant mothers who smoke. Carbon monoxide levels in cigarette smoke resembles that of automobile exhaust. Smoking thus reduces the oxygen supply to the infant in the womb, in effect slightly smothering the defenseless baby. Mothers who smoked at least half a pack of cigarettes a day during pregnancy are nearly three times more likely to have babies with mucus-blocked airways or episodes of apnea.

NO, there's nothing wrong with smoking during pregnancy. It's the mother's choice. You must be a smoker.

Re: M from Toronto – Women who smoke during pregnancy are at a much higher risk for giving birth to a child with deformities of the lip and mouth, more commonly known as cleft lip and cleft palate. If these aren't birth defects, I don't know what are.

your Dr. tells you that if you are smoking then you need to cut down but not stop cold turkey. It could lead to shock for the baby.

Yeah, no shit that smoking isn't good period, let alone during pregnancy, but it's not your place to judge and call her stupid, everyone makes bad decisions during their lifetime. To Tejas- Yeah, you can disapprove of what I'm doing all you want too, I won't argue that because everyone has the right to their own opinion. But that doesn't give you or anyone else the right to pass judgement on me, women like me, or get invovled in our business. There's a big difference in disapproving it, and getting in someone's business and trying to make them feel like a shitbag all because YOU believe it's wrong. Again, not a single one of you have the right to pass judgement on me or anyone like me for that matter. And another thing, I'm not on any government funded health care program to pay for the health care of me or my child, I do that all out of pocket and through a private health care insurance provider, so you REALLY have no right getting invovled in my health care, my child's health care, or our business, and passing judgement. You realize that you wouldn't have as many violence problems in your communities, if the people in these communities would not only get all the facts first about a situation, but actually stay the hell out of other peoples private business. I'm not trying to be rude, but that's how I feel. So I see how you feel, and now you see how I feel. So let's leave it at that.

Smoking when pregnant will cause a very small chance of birth defects and most of are a low birth weight-which woman seem to want now a days anyways so they dont have to work so hard to get them out…a 5 and 6 pound baby is normal now (my own was over 8) …but who cares….I dont smoke and never would…but its hard to quit…I've never heard her music…but let the girl do whatever she wants

Oh and another Tejas- My mother was a NON SMOKER, always has been, always will be. She has never touched a cigerette a day in her life, she doesn't like smoking. My dad on the other hand, has always been a smoker. But before you start claiming that's the reason for my smoking, my parents are divorced, have been since I was 4 yrs old. I grew up with my mom, and spent my teenage years living with my dad. And when my dad found out I smoked, he was pissed. He always taught me the dangers of it and taught me that I should never do it. So don't even start blaming my parents, for my bad choice. I don't like smoking, but oh well. I do it, and it's my lungs, not yours. So please mind your own business. Your not God.

It isn't impossible to quit smoking once you find out you are pregnant. I did it twice. However, isn't it funny that we always want to crucify smokers when many smokers who take care of themselves in every other way are actually pretty healthy - but it is like the sin of all sins to tell someone who is obese to stop eating all the crap they put into their bodies. Gaining too much weight when you are pregnant or being already obese and pregnant can cause huge complications. Everyone has an addiction to something, but if you can somehow label people "mean" for calling you out on yours then no one will. IMO, obesity is so much worse than smoking, which I no longer do, but seriously - people glare, tell off and make life difficult for smokers all the time but when is the last time you walked up and told someone to put down their cheeseburger and supersized fries?

Re: Hope – It's fine to smoke and kill yourself, but when you risk the health of your child, you must expect people to find that incredibly selfish. I don't really care, you're obviously not the brightest bulb, but that poor kid might suffer because of your selfishness. But since smoking to you is more important than possibly affecting your child, then deal with the consequences. If he/she's born with no problems, you can say "I told you so." At least until you die from lung cancer and leave the child motherless. Just think a little bit harder about what's truly important in life and stand up to the tobacco companies who have you under their thumb. Be strong and save your life—if not for you then for the new child whose mother will be dead in a few years.

I really don't care if you approve of me or my language or not. I don't see how it's your business anyway. And I think it's quite amusing that the only reason why you guys are targeting me on this issue, is because I have been blantly honest. And the fact is, I have made some of you look really bad for passing judgement on a situation you know NOTHING about, AND THE FACT IS OVER HALF OF YOU ARE WISHING HARM ON A BABY, FOR A CHOICE THAT THE MOTHER MAKES! And you say that people like me and Lily are sick? Take a look in the fucking mirror, when you wish harm on an unborn baby for a decision that the mother makes that YOU don't like, that makes you worse than us. At least we know what we are doing is wrong, but yet you pass judgement, talk down to/about and wish harm on an unborn child, and say you have every right too do so, and don't understand why people like us get pissed off at people like you? Talk about hypocritcal! This discussion is full of them! At least I admit I'm not making the wisest choice, but I don't try to cover it up and claim it as, "my right or duty to express my concern," God, you people are small minded. Some of you make me sick. Grow up.
