A Florida yoga teacher was tasered by police for getting into a non-violent verbal argument with an officer at a Best Buy department store.

Did some of you morons even bother to read the reason credit card fraud was suspected?? It wasn't a stolen card, it was most definitely her's. During check-out, she received an emergency phone call about her child, so for privacy she stepped outside to complete the call. The cashier decided it must be a stolen card and the woman was trying to "escape", so she informed a cop who merely happened to be present in the store that she thought the card was stolen. The woman re-entered the store at the cop's request and the cop proceeded to harass her. REMEMBER: IT WAS HER CARD AND SHE HAD DONE NOTHING "WRONG"!! She gets angry and begins yelling at the cop, the cop is trying to order her around (I'm pretty sure they can't if you're NOT doing anything illegal.) Then the cop advances on her, almost chasing the woman, who's hands are raised in a non-threatening manner…and a secodn or so later *BAM she tasers her and drops her to the floor. Inappropriate and handled entirely wrong. The cop is an idiot.

In Vancouver Canada, police tasered a polish man wondering in the airport because he couldn't understand English. He was dead at the scene.

The poor guy was just really tired because of the long flight and he was looking for his elder mother who was supposed to pick him up in the airport. He couldn't speak English and understand the signs so he wondered around looking frustrated and angry. There was no airport staff to help him. 5 police came and didn't even bother to communicate or anything, they tasted him and killed him right away.

i live in the city where this happened, and i was there at the store the day after thanksgiving and i saw that lady, she was acting crazy, telling people she was gonna knock them out of the way if they didnt move. other people went and got an officer…she went off on the officer. he told her to leave and she wouldnt! she really was acting like i dont know what, but i sure as hell didnt feel safe around that crazy bia!

You obviously weren't there or you would've known that the cop was a LADY not a 'he' as you said.

This is a scary thing. After reading this and seeing the video, I preceded to look up other sorts of wrongful tasering incidents and it's crazy.. I mean it's scary. I have always respected cops, but there are some out there who use their power to the extreme. They take out any aggression on innocent people because they can- and they WILL get away with it (unless in a case like this which causes a media firestorm).

This was a black female cop and a white female bystander. If the races were reversed, could you imagine the outcry from the community? ALSO… doesn't it always seem like female cops have a perma-chip on their shoulder and a need to prove themselves? I know it's not necessarily their faults, but still, if a male cop had been handling the situation, he would have not felt the need to use a taser to control the situation.

just a thought.

OK… i realize the woman just received a very upsetting phone call from her husband about their daughter…. but WHY did she not just calm down for a second and EXPLAIN to the officer what was going on???? and why would you answer your cell phone when you're standing in the checkout line anyway (ANNOYING AND RUDE!!).. just wait 30 seconds til you get outside!!!

however… after seeing the tape, it does seem like the officer was trying to back her into a corner though… obviously she was agitated and from their body language it seems like she was making her more agitated. i do think the cop- who was a black woman- got a thrill from using the taser on the other woman because she was white. sounds like discrimination & racism to me.
still.. there doesn't seem to be any excuse for screaming belligerently and cursing at the cop, when they are asking you REPEATEDLY to calm down!! i guess her yoga isn't working.

I actually wrote to Charlie Christ because my gfriend had a situation with a bull-dyke cop in Daytona beach. I think it is disgusting and that tasers need to be taken away from cops. I told my daughters to not trust cops. I think cops abuse their power and I will never trust them. They are the enemy more often they they are our salvation. Would you want to pay for the officer's medical bills if she had been hurt by this woman? Not enough info has been released in the case to determine why the woman abruptly left during a transcation with her husband's credit card. Before tasers, cops either put themselves at risk physically in arguments that escalated to violent acts or in fights that had already started and guess who pays for their medical bills??? Me and you. Instead cops are using tasers to prevent unnecessary injuries. And when people say that the woman was doing nothing wrong, you have to admit that someone "rushing" out of a store during the holiday season after using "someone else's" credit card is a little suspicious. You also have to look at some of the activity around that Best Buy, it's definitely not Pleasantville.

It doesn't look like anyone is saying tasers directly cause death like a bullet, it is usually an existing heart problem or something yes, but the person would not have dropped down dead without the use of the taser.
What part of that is hard to understand? If an ordinary member of the public used a taser on another ordinary member of the public they would be arrested for it and if they killed someone by using a taser then god help them, they are in prison for sure.

If it was possible to calm down just by someone telling you to then none of us would ever be stressed. Being upset or stressed out is an emotional state which one can not just turn off because someone demands. In fact, being told to calm down (in that manner, with threats of violence no less) when you are angry or stressed is only likely to make you worse.
The fact is the woman was not anywhere near the officer, the officer kept approaching and invading Yoga woman's personal space which is obviously going to make things worse. That's what people do instinctively when people approach them, they back off, especially when it is threatening as this police officers behaviour was. Could she not speak loud enough? Was 2 feet away too far for the officer to get her point accross?

It should be the same with a taser. Why tase someone who does not have a gun or any other weapon, is not anywhere near and not doing anything physical except slowly backing away???

True story: I had a friend of mine who has a prostetic leg who was riding with others he was in the back seat tipsy.

The driver was not drinking when he took time to get out of the car the cop roughly pulled him out causing his prostetic leg to go off balance he fell face first to the ground knocked out two teeth and we he could not get up because of this, then he was then tasered.

The Officer Not listening to the others he told everyone to be quite when he found out that his leg was prostetic. The officer got cocky and said why did anyone of y'all tell me?

The police officer let them go but my friend did not file a complain becuse he was afraid to be harrass.

Florida is one of the most corrupt states in the entire country. Your are right…I do not like police officers..my cousins were crossing the street in NY and were run over by a police officer who had been drinking since he got off duty that morning..sad but true..I fear them. Just try being stopped by a cop in NC and you will know what I mean.

Okay - as a police officer's wife, please let me know how an officer is to handle a situation (that could escalate) when someone is refusing to obey a lawful order. Walk away and disregard the entire situation? It's one of those lose-lose situations. Can't imagine getting tazed for an "argument" but without more details I can't make a judgment call, either.

Florida is a Police State. Most of the cops have a nazi attitude. They are no longer there to "serve and protect", it's more like "CONTROL AND ABUSE".
We moved out of the country because it's so filled with FEAR and paranoia. It's unhealthy. We now live in Ireland. The cops here DO NOT CARRY GUNS.
They mind their own business if there is a drunken fight in the street. They can't be bothered. They are there if you ask for help. Otherwise, they pretty much keep to themselves. It's a much safer environment. I used to be afraid of the cops in America.
