This Will Be Very Interesting

Filed under: Jon Stewart > TV News > Stephen Colbert

capt1__opt.jpg

Despite the ongoing writers strike, both Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert have announced plans to return to the air.

The funny men will resume production on their Comedy Central shows January 7th without any scribes, though.

Unlike the other returning talk show hosts, however, the Daily Show and the Colbert Report are heavily scripted.

Both programs will likely have to rely on much more interview segments, but booking guests may prove difficult.

Both Colbert and Stewart are Writers Guild members.

It should be very very interesting to see how their shows fare without writers!

It will be interesting to see how their shows are. The Ellen Degeneres Show sucks now that the writers are gone. Too much stupid filler. I love Ellen, but she can't do her show without her writers.

Colbert and Stewart are not fools.
They've sat around and realized, along with the rest of us in Hollywood who haven't been drinking the Kool Aid, that the blind are leading the blind over at WGA HQ.
Like Letterman, Conan, Leno and Ferguson before them, they're sending the message to the WGA that they're not buying into this strike any longer.

    Look at it this way–
WGA was led into this strike by strike happy fools who had NO STRATEGY whatsoever. Are the issues real? Of course they are, but without a strategy, this is a wasted effort.
The only thing the WGA leaders were focused on was getting a huge strike authorization vote. They succeeded.
It's been all down hill from there.

It's IMPOSSIBLE to do TDS and The Colbert Report w/out writers! C'mon, now!!! Jay Leno, David Letterman (and that dickhead Conan O'Brien) can just skip the opening monologue and go right to the guests. These type of comedy news shows are like, 65% reliant on writers for comedy.

  28. odie says – reply to this

    28

I for one am THRILLED to have both of these shows back! My hope is that somehow both Colbert and Stewart find a way to continue supporting the strike despite going back on the air, and that this doesn't hurt the efforts of the writers who remain on strike. YAY FOR MY TWO FAVE SHOWS RESUMING!!!!

  29. Em says – reply to this

    29

Yeah, they're both writers themselves… I know Jon Stewart rewrites all his jokes before he reads them, so it's pretty much his anyways. They didn't get where they were by not being funny and needing lines to be read to them.

"JUST LIKE A JEW TO GO BEHIND THE BACKS OF THE WRITERS THEY ONCE SUPPORTED BECAUSE THEY LOVE A DOLLAR TOO MUCH TO GO ANOTHER DAY WITHOUT WORKING. JEWS ARE KILLING THE PLANET."

Yeah, just wow. I met some of Jon's writers a few weeks ago, she really doesn't care about the strike… They're all still getting payed. Do you really think Jon cares THAT much about money? Isn't he the one who decided to pay all the employee's of his & Colberts show for a few weeks after the strike started? I think it's great that they're coming back on the air. Too many employees are getting fired from this stupid strike. It's the writers that are money hungry, and the CEO's… not the talk show hosts.

It's people like you who are killing the planet, by spreading hate. I'm sure you think you were just kidding, but do you know how much it hurts to read that people think things like that?

Do you know thats what the holocaust was based on? That Jews were taking over the world.

  30. Oxford says – reply to this

then they shouldn't bring boring ass people on. i mean, if you are up on the Daily Show as it is, it's not like their "guests" ever have anything interesting or witty to say anyways, scripted or not. i don't see how this is a problem.

ps. about the SCAB comments…maybe some intelligent people who see past the $ signs realize how ridiculous it is to keep on going on like this and making loyal fans suffer in the process. all it does is prove how money is the deciding factor in everything and it's pretty sickening if you ask me.

I mean, my daughter makes alot of money and I profit off of it, but the principle of the whole thing is just sickening if you think about it.

thank you em for actually posting a intelligent comment on here!, i knew the anti semites would have a say, but some how i dont think colbert is a jew , lol..now the real issue is they are both writers, and they have their own companys ..but when it comes down to it, a union must stay strong, and i hope jon and stephen see that in the long run it will benefit the smaller, and hard working men and women of that industry..im sure somewhere there is a logic.
I'd like to see it from their side please.
    PS

I am glad that all the night shows are going back. Maybe it will speed up negotiations. All the night time hosts said they are doing this for their crews. They can't keep paying them. Jay Leno said that the striking writers were putting over 100 people on his show out of work. These workers are not going to gain anything with a writers contract. I think it is time too for the writers to sit at the table and not leave. How much money have they lost and are never going to recover? Shows are cutting their seasons short and the networks are bringing on more game shows and reality shows and british shows to fill in. If the writers don't hurry, the fill ins might be permanent and some will never get hired/rehired. It has been proven before when others have gone on strike for a long time that even with a great contract increase, it will take years for them to make up the money lost during the strike

When I saw this, I didn't believe what I was reading. I hope they both remember this as the day they sold out. If Jon and Stephen cave, the last bastions of progressive media on mainstream tv, then what's left? Caving to Viacom's pressure and going back on shows really what kind of character they have. SHAME.

    53

the writers have gone and screwed themselves! There's a very simple solution now for the executives: make separate deals or contract new writers for JUST the following shows: The Simpsons, Lost, The Office, Family Guy, and get rid of every other scripted show dumb Americans watch, like Grey's Anatomy, House, and Heroes. Fuck 30 Rock, that show is done. Fuck SNL.

Lets face it the writers are whining about DVD and Internet revenues. What INTERNET interview. Its like music people want it and get it for free. So 10% of nothing is nothing. How about this they go more on commission and less salary. May be than they will not write so much CRAP! Go John and Steve!!

Shows don't only consist of writers, there are cameramen, editors, producers, assistant producers and make-up artists, researchers and so on who make those shows run. And who don't have anything to do with the strike. Consequently they are out of work right now as well without a paycheck. Take it from someone who knows.

  62. qjersey says – reply to this

I know these guys are supporting their union members, but didn't these two and the other late night talk show hosts begin their careers as writers and comedians? So i guess to stick with the union they won't write anything for their own shows?

This is how Giant Oil Companies make business decisions. Go for the most money. Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are both Capitalist Pigs of the worst sort. They play at Liberal and treat all their fans like suckers. It won't be so funny next time they satirize and bad mouth a Conservative. I won't be watching them again.

This isn't about money, it's about common sense. These people seem to understand what a lost cause the strike is. Whoever said that it is the writers and the executives who are the ones being greedy is spot on. On another note does everyone really think that all the writers voted yes to this strike? That is a huge and dangerous assumption to make. There are many writers (not to mention the countless other crew people) who would rather be working for their original wage than be unemployed. The people here who are condemning these entertainers to support the writers (and subsequently ignoring everyone elses needs) are being heartless, blind and rude. There is much more at stake than just the writers wages. Think about it.
