Disastrous!

The big media companies are having a very dark holiday seson! Not only are they hurting financially over the ongoing writers strike, but four out of five of the big Christmas releases bombed at the box office this past weekend.
Charlie Wilson’s War (with Tom Hanks & Julia Roberts) grossed $9,682,000 to come in 4th in its first week.
Sweeny Todd (with Johnny Depp) grossed $9,302,000 to come in 5th in it’s first week.
P.S. I Love You (with Hilary Swank & Gerard Butler) grossed $6,505,000 to come in 6th.
Walk Hard (with John C. Reilly) grossed a dismal $4,150,000 to come in 8th in its first week.
The only new release that did well this past weekend was National Treasure: Book of Secrets. The Nicolas Cage film took in $45.1 million.
Merry Christmas!

Yeah, ignore AVPR - which came in second RIGHT after National Treasure. Because then it would prove your "news" post wrong. STOP TRYING TO MAKE NEWS WHEN THERE ISN'T. Those movies just sucked.

Sweeny Todd had good per-theater average as it was in 1,249 theaters. So that result can't be considered a bomb.
Sweeney Todd had half the number of theaters that Charlie Wilson's War had, and did nearly the same busines…plus, its an R rating - not exactly the kind of film you can take the Christmas family…I think for a musical that's full of blood slashing, it did rather well…but then I LOVED LOVED LOVED it, so I'm kinda biased…heh…
I really love Johnny Depp!
he's talking about movies that came out over the weekend you fucking dumbass…avpr only came out yesterday
he's talking about movies that came out over the weekend you fucking dumbass…avpr only came out yesterday
Chris- you are correct! Sweeney Todd was screened in 1/2 as many theaters as Charlie Wilson's War. Do your research before writing such things- save yourself some embarrasment.
Fuck that, Sweeney Todd was amazing.
Re: Chris – Its also the holiday season where movies do well during the week so you sound wait to see before labeling all of these as bombs.
Is'nt that a pic from that horrible John Travolta movie from a few years back? Some kind of veiled Scientology bullshit. I went to see that with a boyfriend and it was awful. That's the same ridiculous nose thingee.
My daughter and I took in Sweeney Todd for Christmas and it was AMAZING. I think another reason though for the box-office lackluster is the price. Way to expensive. Folks wait to get things on DVD. The price then is the same as 2 people to the theater and you can watch a DVD forever.
LOL I love that you used a battlefield earth picture
What do u think about SWEENEY TODD? I haven't seen the movie.. But I have great expectations.
The ecomony isn't that great and people are watching their $$. The holiday shopping season has been off too. Who wants to go spend close to $10 to see most of these films which are kinda crappy looking. It's getting so damned expensive to go to the movies and people are sick of the shitty films Hollywood is making for the money.
How can you possibly be so ignorant Perez? If the movies bomb and the studios don't make their money back, that's going to hurt the writers at the table sweetie. After all, exactly WHO WROTE the shit that's rotting and sticking up the box office. I'll give you a hint: those screenwriters who are bitching about making MORE money. More money to write movies that suck. It's a collaborative process dumb ass. If the studios fail, so do the writers.
Sweeney Todd was not considered a flop you dope!!! Why don't you point out the fact that it played half the theaters the rest of the top 10 (barring Juno at #10…. is that a flop to you?) did
Ya know, Perez, I really can't stand when you don't bother to do your homework before posting a story. "Sweeney Todd" was NOT a bomb, because it only opened in limited release, in literally 1/3 of the number of theaters that "National Treasure" and "Charlie Wilson's War" opened in. Therefore, with that information taken into consideration, "Sweeney Todd" was actually very successful (in fact, it beat the projection that the studios released)!
are you fucking retarted perez? sweeney todd had one of the highest per screen averages in the top 10 this weekend. and Charlie Wilson's War wasn't exactly gaged to gain mass appeal, its a film that's going to look to capitalize on some of the award recognition it might receive in the coming weeks, so with that considered an opening under $10 million might appear weak considering the caliber of its stars, but i expect that it will end up grossing nearly 75$ million at the box office which is far from a bomb. Meanwhile, tracking for P.S. I Love you was actually geared lower than its actual total because of its abismal reviews and lastly nobody wants to see Walk Hard, no matter how funny it is, it still looks stupid to most of the public. But yea Perez learn your shit, you post retarted things like this all the time and make yourself look like an idiot. Why don't you actually read someone else's box office blog before you go and post your own for a change?
"Charlie Wilson’s War (with Tom Hanks & Julia Roberts) grossed $9,682,000 to come in 4th in its first week.
Sweeny Todd (with Johnny Depp) grossed $9,302,000 to come in 5th in it’s first week."
1- It's Sweeney*
2-You neglect to mention that Charlie Wilson opened in about 2575 theaters and cost $75million while Sweeney's not fully released yet, opening in less than half of Wilson with 1249 theaters AND a lower budget at $50. It'll be opening wider on January 11th and should be okay.
If I need box office info I'll go to BoxOfficeGuru or BoxOfficeMojo, not Perez. Though I love this site, stick to what you know.
well, of course, Walk Hard bombed. It was awful. I saw it yesterday and couldn't be more disappointed. I even dozed for a second. I expected so much with the brillian cast, but found myself bored to death.
the only people who I'd think would go to the movies on christmas are those that are jewish or don't celebrate xmas? perez, you always "jump to conclusions." just because people weren't rushing to see the movies yesterday, doesn't mean they won't do well. i'd have to say the numbers they brought in for JUST ONE DAY are pretty good, don't you think?
Sweeney Todd was the shit! i loved it and i hate musicals!!
AVP (new release) 2nd place
this post = fail.
i'd rather dl a movie anyway. :O
Ha I owned you all!!!!! I"m 36!!
Yeah well that is what happens when u have a bunch of useless and bought off politicians who don't do jack shit about economical inflation and ship all of the jbs out of america! Give the middle class a break!
why would i pay $10 to sit in some nasty old theatre with uncomfortable seats and some dumb annoying kids screaming, when i can wait two months and get it on netflix, and watch it in the comfort of my own home on my 46" TV? Fuck the jews of hollywood and their greedy ways!
Your a fucking idiot Perez, neither Charlie Wilsons Was or Sweeny was a flop, ya fuckin idiot do some reasearch. Charilie Wilson was expected to make that much and Sweeney only opened in 1000 theaters, it still has to expand nation wide so 10 million is hardly a flop, actually preety good. Why not look into shit before postin, wait I have a better Idea, just dont talk about movies, you have no idead what ur talking about, better stick to Britney.
National Treasure was pretty awful. Charlie Wilson's War was better than I expected. At least I could pay attention to CWW, I zoned out at the end of NT, it was too much to take ( improbable and stupid).
sweeney todd wasn't a bomb. it played in half of the theaters as everything else in the top 10 so yeah, do some research.
This is because people are getting dumber by the day and they think National Treasure 2 looks like a good movie.
Walk Hard was so funny and brilliant, I love Dewey Cox!!!
i thought alien vs predator requiem sucked. I really liked the first one too. I was sooo disappointed. Were the writers on strike when that movie was written????
hey…'JUUH'
avpr is lame. always will be. get over it.
ps
perez…i love you
National Treasure sucks and Nicolas Cage weave looks so fake, it looks like he has a dead squirrel on top of his head!!! I used to like him as an actor, however his latest films were just awful!!!!
None of this movies are worth seeing. I'd wait until they come on DVD!!!
Except that Sweeney Todd is a fucking musical about killing people. I think fifth place is pretty goddamn awesome!! And wasn't it also showing in fewer theaters?
I think they support the strike thats why?
are you stupid? They have been doing great! Do you know how many movies have come out an made tons of money?
Wow. People will watch anything. Now if they'd rerelease Pirate: the Movie then maybe it would be worth going to the movies! Ha ha!
Hm, I expected Sweeney Todd to do so much better…I guess it didn't live up to the hype.
I don't see what makes National Treasure (either one of the films) so special.
Perez you are so stupid. Why don't you actually do research before you post stuff here. Some of those movies didn't have WIDE releases which means they played in less then 2,000 theaters. So of course they're not going to gross as much. But then again, you're such an expert on the movie business and you seem to know everything. I normally like what you post but when you post stuff and don't do the research it makes you look stupid.
god americans are stupid….looks like we can look forward to more national treasures and alvin and the chipmunks, while great movies like sweeny todd wont get made.
it's a trend, this means that stars should get paid the most 1 mil, movies arent making anything on them
You're only half right, Walk hard and P.S. I Love You did bomb. Sweeney Todd and Charlie Wilson's War didn't. They are looking for ST and CWW to have about the same numbers next weekend as they did this weekend, or higher. Similar to what Titanic did back in 97. It made 20 million dollars in it's first weekend, you'd be preaching BOMB BOMB BOMB, but then it made 20 million dollars the next weekend, and the next weekend, and so on, and we all saw how that turned out.
Hahahaha.. nobody wants to watch their regurgerated crap anymore.
Actually, Sweeney Todd did very very well - it was released in less than 1,200 screens, and had a per-theater take of more than 7,000 dollars - compared to the well over 2,500 screens that "Charlie Wilson's War" had - and the well over 3,000 screens that "I Am Legend" and "National Treasure" was pulling.
Speak the truth! The people love Sweeney
PEREZ, your box office totals on most of these movies are just plain wrong incorrect. Charlie Wilson's war has already made 15 million+ and it's not been out a week (althoug it DOES look like a snore-fest). Sweeney Tood is playing on HALF as many screens and made nearly as much. Making it a relative HIT… I enjoy reading your web site, but please make an effort to base you commentary on facts. I could make fake numbers myself. Don't need ya for that.
OH, if anyone cares for the real numbers and release dates:

People will pay money to see movies that entertain. Once in a blue moon, you will see a masterpeice but these days with the constant retreads, that is a rarity. I can honestly say that the only movie that I saw that was any good recently was the Bourne Ultimatum, the rest was not worth the effort of paying ten hard earned dollars to see. As for the other movies out there - I live in New York, so the not mainstream-Indie movies, I have to rely on word of mouth, Alternative Papers and the Indie-Movie Houses in Manhattan - a good Indie-Alternative Movie - now playing at the Quad-Cinema in Manhattan is the Movie: Arranged - go see it, it is a gem.
why is there a pic of john travolta in battle field earth?
Look, you fat retard - Sweeney Todd opened in only a THIRD of the cinemas that Charlie Wilson's War opened in. That's hardly a disaster. You are so stupid that it literally drives me insane. Stop blogging and go to school.
Sweeney Todd was a limited realease. was not in the same number of theatres as Walk Hard or charlie wilson.
Stop being such an asshole. You know gossip, but you know shit about movie industry.
Yeah, normally I agree with everything you say, Perez, but as others have said, you got this one wrong. Sweeney Todd is in limited release with about 1200 theatres while the others in the top 5 are wide released in twice as many theatres. Plus, its five day gross is now around $12.75 million. When it becomes wide release, I expect that number will expand.
P.S. I Love You is a very good movie. Not your typical romantic comedy. It's sad but also very funny with a little bit of drama. The critics were wrong on this movie and unfortuately people still listen to critics instead of word of mouth. Projections were on target.
i saw charlie wilson's war and sweeney todd this past weekend. i adored chalrie wilson's war. i thought it was one of the better movies i've seen lately. it seemed like it would have a really broad appeal. oh well. i guess not? i mean, i get why people aren't racing out to see sweeney todd (is it even in full release yet?) but i thought charlie wilson would draw the masses.
if you like poliics, go see it. it's great!
Once again, ol' Perez is dealing with a subject that's over his head (i.e. SIMPLE MATH).
Considering that the top 3 films this weekend pulled in over $100M combined, Hollywood is hardly worried. If there's no news, just MAKE IT UP, eh Perez? Spin the numbers into a story. Pretty weak.
YOU're A MORON.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!!!
SWEENEY TODD WAS RELEASED IN ONLY 1,000 THEATERS AND STILL MADE IT TO #5.
IT TOOK NATIONAL TREASURE to be in almost 4,000 SCREENS to BANK THAT MUCH.
SWEENEY TODD IS THE CLEAR WINNER>
MORON!
If i am not mistaken, Sweeny Todd was in limited released of only 1,249 + / - theaters, so 5th place is actually pretty good.
Sweeney Todd opened in less than 1500 theatres and it's rated R. That's hardly a bust. Charlie Wilsons War is also rated R, and 10 million in a family oriented weekend isn't bad. Walk Hard is also rated R and it's easy for a movie like that to get lost in the holiday weekend. Shut your face Perez, stop pretending you know things and report on the sleeze of Hollywood, the only thing you're useful for.
Battlefield Earth earned critical acclaim is was very well received by most sci-fiction enthusiasts despite what some say. Maybe it's ahead of it's time for some but I guarantee you that it will be considered a classic by many in the near future.
Get your facts straight Perez…."Walk Hard" only opened yesterday (Christmas Day). That box office total you are calling "dismal" was a one-day take. Don't be so quick to spread negative "news".
You got everything almost right. "Sweeny Todd" actually did well considering it's still in limited release compare to the other new movies. It's only playing in half the theatres that "Charlie Wilson's War" does & both grossed about the same. It will even do better once it plays in more theatres & it will also be helped greatly once the Oscar nominations are out. It's a shoo-in for Best Picture.
WALK HARD OPENED ON CHRISTMAS DAY! IT DID NOT OPEN LAST WEEKEND. THAT'S A TOTAL FOR ONE DAY IN THEATERS! AND AFTER ONE DAY, IT DID BETTER THAN MOST FILMS THAT CAME OUT LAST FRIDAY! YOU CALL THAT "DISMAL"?
Perez never has his box office facts straight: Charlie Wilson's War and Sweeney Todd had very respectable performances over the weekend. Sweeney Todd was playing in just over 1,000 theaters, while CWW was not expected to start huge. The ting that is important to remember is that during the holidays, every day is a weekend day, so these movies will be rolling in dough by the end of the next two weeks. If you want actual box office analysis, check out my site: theboxofficejunkie.com
Jonny Depp's Sweeny Todd actually came in right on target. The opening weekend numbers were considered a success. Whoever the dumbass is that writes this shit needs to start considering the number of theatres that movies open in. The film averaged an impressive $7,447 per site and earned good reviews from critics along with four Golden Globe nods. I've noticed noticed this ignorant mistake in the past several times. Sharpen up or shut up!
go to box office guru to get your box office info. you're obviously dumb as shit and can't process the numbers for yourself. don't compromise the "integrity" of this site by commenting on things you don't understand.
Sweeney Todd was open in HALF the amount of theaters as National Treasure, and on top of that it was Rated-R!! Based on these circumstances ALL the PROFESSIONAL critics have agreed that it did really well. Jeeze Perez (or whatever writer you're using today), get your facts straight.
"Charlie" was a bomb - don't let anyone spin that. Less than $10M is pathetic for a movie with such "star power". People have no interest in political-themed flicks (read: Lions for Lambs, The Kingdom, etc.)
P.S I love you was AMAZING i've watched it 2 times and it only came out yesterday i wnt 2 the 1st showing in my area and i wnt 2nite!!!! Soooooooooo
good and gerards strip tease………………..
yummy
Travolta, have you ever heard of Kleenex?
Hey, to the first 9 commenters……You all a bunch of looooooosers! Who give a flying fuck whether you're first or not? Bunch of dumb fucks
National Treasure played in 3,832 theaters, while Sweeney Todd only played in 1,249. Aside from that fact - Sweeney Todd was AMAZING, waaaaaay better than National Treasure, which I also thought was good. Still haven't seen "I Am Legend", it's on my list for next week - I'm on VACATION!
It must be the HDTV effect: why shell out 10 bucks at the local cineplex to watch the damned movie just once, when one can pop in a Blu-Ray disc and enjoy(more or less) it on an LCD wide screen at home–with the same picture quality, and, whenever one feels like it. We're fast approaching the day when the term "Theatre" will be solely defined as a live performance. Eventually, even those Blu-Ray discs will make neat-looking coasters.
Perez…most of those movie mentions were in limited release u idiot
so basically, the worst movie did the best? This is crap.
