Disastrous!

The big media companies are having a very dark holiday seson! Not only are they hurting financially over the ongoing writers strike, but four out of five of the big Christmas releases bombed at the box office this past weekend.

Charlie Wilson’s War (with Tom Hanks & Julia Roberts) grossed $9,682,000 to come in 4th in its first week.

Sweeny Todd (with Johnny Depp) grossed $9,302,000 to come in 5th in it’s first week.

P.S. I Love You (with Hilary Swank & Gerard Butler) grossed $6,505,000 to come in 6th.

Walk Hard (with John C. Reilly) grossed a dismal $4,150,000 to come in 8th in its first week.

The only new release that did well this past weekend was National Treasure: Book of Secrets. The Nicolas Cage film took in $45.1 million.

Merry Christmas!

Sweeny Todd had good per-theater average as it was in 1,249 theaters. So that result can't be considered a bomb.

Sweeney Todd had half the number of theaters that Charlie Wilson's War had, and did nearly the same busines…plus, its an R rating - not exactly the kind of film you can take the Christmas family…I think for a musical that's full of blood slashing, it did rather well…but then I LOVED LOVED LOVED it, so I'm kinda biased…heh…

      28

My daughter and I took in Sweeney Todd for Christmas and it was AMAZING. I think another reason though for the box-office lackluster is the price. Way to expensive. Folks wait to get things on DVD. The price then is the same as 2 people to the theater and you can watch a DVD forever.

The ecomony isn't that great and people are watching their $$. The holiday shopping season has been off too. Who wants to go spend close to $10 to see most of these films which are kinda crappy looking. It's getting so damned expensive to go to the movies and people are sick of the shitty films Hollywood is making for the money.

How can you possibly be so ignorant Perez? If the movies bomb and the studios don't make their money back, that's going to hurt the writers at the table sweetie. After all, exactly WHO WROTE the shit that's rotting and sticking up the box office. I'll give you a hint: those screenwriters who are bitching about making MORE money. More money to write movies that suck. It's a collaborative process dumb ass. If the studios fail, so do the writers.

Sweeney Todd was not considered a flop you dope!!! Why don't you point out the fact that it played half the theaters the rest of the top 10 (barring Juno at #10…. is that a flop to you?) did

    34. Christopher Hickey says – reply to this

      34

Ya know, Perez, I really can't stand when you don't bother to do your homework before posting a story. "Sweeney Todd" was NOT a bomb, because it only opened in limited release, in literally 1/3 of the number of theaters that "National Treasure" and "Charlie Wilson's War" opened in. Therefore, with that information taken into consideration, "Sweeney Todd" was actually very successful (in fact, it beat the projection that the studios released)!

    35. Perez Sucks says – reply to this

      35

are you fucking retarted perez? sweeney todd had one of the highest per screen averages in the top 10 this weekend. and Charlie Wilson's War wasn't exactly gaged to gain mass appeal, its a film that's going to look to capitalize on some of the award recognition it might receive in the coming weeks, so with that considered an opening under $10 million might appear weak considering the caliber of its stars, but i expect that it will end up grossing nearly 75$ million at the box office which is far from a bomb. Meanwhile, tracking for P.S. I Love you was actually geared lower than its actual total because of its abismal reviews and lastly nobody wants to see Walk Hard, no matter how funny it is, it still looks stupid to most of the public. But yea Perez learn your shit, you post retarted things like this all the time and make yourself look like an idiot. Why don't you actually read someone else's box office blog before you go and post your own for a change?

Sweeny Todd (with Johnny Depp) grossed $9,302,000 to come in 5th in it’s first week."

      1- It's Sweeney*
2-You neglect to mention that Charlie Wilson opened in about 2575 theaters and cost $75million while Sweeney's not fully released yet, opening in less than half of Wilson with 1249 theaters AND a lower budget at $50. It'll be opening wider on January 11th and should be okay.

If I need box office info I'll go to BoxOfficeGuru or BoxOfficeMojo, not Perez. Though I love this site, stick to what you know.

It made 20 million dollars in it's first weekend, you'd be preaching BOMB BOMB BOMB, but then it made 20 million dollars the next weekend, and the next weekend, and so on, and we all saw how that turned out.

Speak the truth! The people love Sweeney :-)

People will pay money to see movies that entertain. Once in a blue moon, you will see a masterpeice but these days with the constant retreads, that is a rarity. I can honestly say that the only movie that I saw that was any good recently was the Bourne Ultimatum, the rest was not worth the effort of paying ten hard earned dollars to see. As for the other movies out there - I live in New York, so the not mainstream-Indie movies, I have to rely on word of mouth, Alternative Papers and the Indie-Movie Houses in Manhattan - a good Indie-Alternative Movie - now playing at the Quad-Cinema in Manhattan is the Movie: Arranged - go see it, it is a gem.

    69. Helen says – reply to this

      69

Yeah, normally I agree with everything you say, Perez, but as others have said, you got this one wrong. Sweeney Todd is in limited release with about 1200 theatres while the others in the top 5 are wide released in twice as many theatres. Plus, its five day gross is now around $12.75 million. When it becomes wide release, I expect that number will expand.

P.S. I Love You is a very good movie. Not your typical romantic comedy. It's sad but also very funny with a little bit of drama. The critics were wrong on this movie and unfortuately people still listen to critics instead of word of mouth. Projections were on target.

      75

Sweeney Todd opened in less than 1500 theatres and it's rated R. That's hardly a bust. Charlie Wilsons War is also rated R, and 10 million in a family oriented weekend isn't bad. Walk Hard is also rated R and it's easy for a movie like that to get lost in the holiday weekend. Shut your face Perez, stop pretending you know things and report on the sleeze of Hollywood, the only thing you're useful for.

    78. SweenyFan says – reply to this

      78

You got everything almost right. "Sweeny Todd" actually did well considering it's still in limited release compare to the other new movies. It's only playing in half the theatres that "Charlie Wilson's War" does & both grossed about the same. It will even do better once it plays in more theatres & it will also be helped greatly once the Oscar nominations are out. It's a shoo-in for Best Picture.

    79. Maria says – reply to this

      79

WALK HARD OPENED ON CHRISTMAS DAY! IT DID NOT OPEN LAST WEEKEND. THAT'S A TOTAL FOR ONE DAY IN THEATERS! AND AFTER ONE DAY, IT DID BETTER THAN MOST FILMS THAT CAME OUT LAST FRIDAY! YOU CALL THAT "DISMAL"?

    80. Box Office Truth says – reply to this

      80

Perez never has his box office facts straight: Charlie Wilson's War and Sweeney Todd had very respectable performances over the weekend. Sweeney Todd was playing in just over 1,000 theaters, while CWW was not expected to start huge. The ting that is important to remember is that during the holidays, every day is a weekend day, so these movies will be rolling in dough by the end of the next two weeks. Jonny Depp's Sweeny Todd actually came in right on target. The opening weekend numbers were considered a success. The film averaged an impressive $7,447 per site and earned good reviews from critics along with four Golden Globe nods. I've noticed noticed this ignorant mistake in the past several times. It must be the HDTV effect: why shell out 10 bucks at the local cineplex to watch the damned movie just once, when one can pop in a Blu-Ray disc and enjoy(more or less) it on an LCD wide screen at home–with the same picture quality, and, whenever one feels like it. We're fast approaching the day when the term "Theatre" will be solely defined as a live performance. Eventually, even those Blu-Ray discs will make neat-looking coasters.
