A DUI is the most profitable crime to be cited for. The police will cite the shit out of everyone, because it ends up being quite the money train for the city. Most people should expect to pay out $10,000 for fines, defense, AA classes, etc. No other crime is that profitable for so many people.

My boyfriend got a DUI once a long time ago. His insurance rocketed, he didn't have his license for months, and had to go to court, etc. etc. He didn't catch up with his bills for a couple of years. If it happened to him again, the penalty would be a lot steeper. He woudn't get the "Lohan" treatment. Sometimes celebrities do get treated A LOT differently. It is a big deal anytime someone drinks and drives and the difference is, like it or not, celebrities do influence society. It's sad to think that it's almost become the cool "it" thing to do and it woud be even sadder if a teen thought it were OK or cool to do and then got killed or killed someone. Everyone, yes, even celebrities should be morally responsible for their own actions. If not by the law, then by their own conscience to set a new standard to do the right thing. I tell you if I were in their position and could afford a ride home, I feel I would have absolutely no excuse. No one does, but I would feel appreciative for all that I have and want to give back and not add to the negativity of society. I guess sometimes you have to look at things from a different perspective and not from a position of privledge and not knowing any better. They are only human, but there are those of us regular folks that are ony human too that try not to take anything or anyone for granted.

I think what he's saying is that this is a serious crime for which LOTS of people are given light punishments. He's right. I've known at least 20 people who've had DUI's. Some of them are on their second and third. They pay $750 to a sleazy lawyer and walk. Sometimes they go to a weekend course. This is a really bad situation b/c too many people are getting off easy and not being made to pay for their mistakes. Everyone involved is guilty, from the drunk drivers to their slimy lawyers to the judges who hand out mild punishments b/c they're friends with the slimy lawyers. It doesn't just happen in Hollywood. I live in a large city in the midwest.

For the average citizen, most DUI's will result in the loss of your license for a year, court fines, attorney fees, and diversion classes. Sounds like kind of a big deal to me.

He does say that it's a big deal (meaning that driving drunk is stupid and it kills people) but he's saying the legal part of it isn't a big deal. Compared to other crimes, it really isn't a big deal. It doesn't stigmatize you the way it probably should. There are plenty of professionals with DUIs on their record–yes, they're assholes, but they're not shunned the way other criminals are.
