Listen To This: A Return To Form

Filed under: Listen To This > Sheryl Crow

We love Sheryl Crow, but….

Her musical output these past few years has been a bit uninspired.

However, now that she's a mom, the singer seems to be more content in life and that reflects itself in her music.

Crow's new single, Love Is Free, is a feel-good song reminiscent of old school Sheryl.

All she wants to do is have some fun on every winding road and soak up the sun!

Love Is Free is just beautiful and happy, reminiscent of early Beach Boys.

Check out the jam below.

Love is free my ass. Only if you're a woman. If you're male, you pay for every piece you get. That's why men should never get married, because you're still paying for it long after the wench has dumped you and taken half of your money in the divorce settlement. Stay single, guys. Marriage was invented by women for women. They are the only ones who benefit from it.

I hardly recognized Sheryl's voice. It seems like it's been Pro-Tooled into oblivion. Are they trying to mask age catching up with her voice or was it just bad production like a Tara Reid tummy tuck gone horribly wrong?

Perez, listening to you trying to sound like a music critic is like listening to a baboon fart out poetry through its ass. You have no earthly clue what you're saying and its obvious you're stringing fancy buzz words together in an attempt to sound smart/cultured. Stick to gossip and your pretty extensions. Please.

  54. shm says – reply to this

    54

I love this, even if it doesn't sound like the old Sheryl Crow. You guys who are insulting her are obviously just idoits who don't like good music. Let a woman who's got her stuff together sing happy songs without complaining about it. And this single sounds nothing like Gwen Stefani's current material btw.

  55. Sinn Féin says – reply to this

Jeezus, her music is so so incredibly fucking annoying. Always has been. Everything she`s always done sounds like a commerical for soda and this crap is no exception.

    57

This sounds like "A Change Would Do You Good," only more mature. Great song!

Did you hear "Shine Over Babylon," though? It's beautiful, maybe better than "Love is Free."

  58. Gwen says – reply to this

    58

unimpressive. I haven't liked anything by her since 1998. Plus, my brother is absolutely in love with her, and played her all the time, so I've had my fill of her.

Wow,this tune BITES THE BIG ONE. Ms Crow still hits every note off key.She must be tone deaf. Yikes, how did she ever become a star ???

  60. Antknee says – reply to this

    60

Huh Perez? WIldflower, her last release, was one of her best records that she's ever come out with, along with "Try Not To Remember" the song from Home of the Brave. I seriously hope that you give a re-listen to WIldflower. I'm not a huge fan of hers, but you are wrong on this.

  65. Jesus F. Christ says – reply to this

    65

It sounds a lot more like Rickie Lee Jones' "Chuck E's In Love" than anything by the Beach Boys (maybe the break-down toward the end). In fact, I'm pretty sure the chord progression is ripped directly from Chuck E.

  66. Kelley says – reply to this

    66

Well, this is a song I only want to hear once in my life and I have satisfied that. Also, If people would be less obsessed with being "first" and more interested in writing a funny/smart/interesting/relevant comment, I'm sure it would improve the reputation of the readers. Instead you choose to be idiots, but someone has to make up the majority, right? Are you republican, too?

  67. mike. says – reply to this

    67

seriously shut the fuck up Perez.
"Wildflower" was one of crow's best records ever.
not everything has to be a commercial success to be considered good.

  68. Eric says – reply to this

    68

I'm glad you love Sheryl Crow because I think she is incredibly talented - unlike the Britneys and the other pop tarts on the current music scene. She writes her own music, plays instruments and produces her own CDs. Is her voice of operatic quality? No - but it's real - no gimmicks, no special effects, She has played with some amazing artists too. (Has anyone on this message board heard of Stevie Nicks?)
Trust me…years from now Sheryl will be remembered as having a positive influence on the music industry while many of the other female artists will have gone the way of Loverboy and Milli Vanilli.
The only thing I can say to you personally Perez is that I would like for you to lose your boyfriend, battle breast cancer and adjust to a new child and see how "inspired" you feel. I really like your site but I think the comment you made about her music being uninspired was uncalled for. Slow day in Tinseltown sweetie?
Sheryl's music has always been, and will always be, flawless, beautiful, meaningful and significant.

I'm so glad to see she washed her fingers of that nasty brown stain. Remember when she wanted everyone to use ONE sheet of toilet paper to save the environment? Hell, I use baby wipes and flush those muthers with pride. Take that and stick it in your guitar, lil witch!

  70. J1 says – reply to this

    70

not horrible but BORING, lackluster, and clearly not "old Sheryl Crow" LOL. Song isnt "strong enough" as a 1st single which will bring back her mid 90s Tuesday Night M Hall record sales. She hasnt had a solid, consistently noteworthy album since 1998. Her 2002s album was simply an album of mainly filler and garbage with one decent single (Soak Up The Sun).

  71. JohnnyS says – reply to this

Wildflower was actually her most accomplish CD to date…
I have to defend my girl! Sheryl is AMAZING!!!

There's something very special about Sheryl.

Anyone that can write a song like Safe and Sound is a gem.

She's not a communist….love isn't free in their world, it's void of love or fun.

    82

The Goddess that is Sheryl Crow is superior to the overrated piece of garbage that some people like to call the Beach Boys. And yes, even Pet Sounds is a fucking horrible album.

This new Sheryl song is pretty good. Though I am more drawn to her moody ballads than her happy pieces. Weather Channel, Riverwide, Home and The Book are among my favourites.

  83. Huh? says – reply to this

    83

This song has been on the radio for like 2 months now. It really does suck. I have to say this song sounds like she's just going through the motions. Like she's just fulfilling her record contract. I'm constantly amazed that she's lasted this long in the business. But hey, if Britney can phone in a performance on her latest record and land on Rolling Stone's "Best of"" List, this song should win a thousand Grammys. Mainstream music just pretty much sucks across the board. I work with a lot of live bands where I live and this song would get someone laughed off the stage.

Can't listen to Cheryl Crow—No matter what she sings, all I can hear is her political manifesto, and her request for all of us to use only one square of toilet paper for each trip to the commode to save the environment.

When she decides to shut the fuck up and actually sing, perhaps I'll be able to hear her.
