Lindsay Lohan is not going back to rehab, despite being videotaped drinking champagne at a New Year's Eve party.
Attempting to do some damage control, the recovering addict's lawyer, Blair Berk, has released the following statement:
"Rehab gives you the tools to deal with slipping up. This is not about her spiraling into a 4-day binge.
This is what you want to happen–you want somebody to stop themselves.
The good news was that Lindsay stopped herself that night, called her sponsor, and got herself immediately back on track. There is no magic cure here. The most unfortunate part of this is that Lindsay has to share her 'one day at a time' with the entire world."

well, you and I can drink on new years without any problems, but Lindsay's an alcoholic. Alcoholism is something that's very difficult to control. To stay clean you can't even have one sip. One turns into a glass, which turns into a bottle…you get the idea.
I think people need to give the girl a break. Anyone who has had friends or family with an addiction understands that addictions could last a long time, if not forever. People relapse. Shame on us to judge someone who obviously has a problem. I bet its a million times more difficult to overcome something like this when you're constantly in the limelight and constantly being judged. She only went to rehab in the first place to get out of doing jail time — she never had any intentions of sobering up permanently. She knew that after the last car chase fiasco (including racist behavior) that she was might screwed unless she did the whole contrition thing. she spent all her time in rehab shagging & probably smuggling in drugs. she should have avoided parties like this so early on in her sobriety. She should change people, places and things or else "slip" back into her old alcoholic ways. Hopefully, she'll learn from this mistake.
yeah big fuckin deal. i have plenty of friends who have been in AA and NA. it is completely true that once you're an "addict" it's unlikely you'll remain sober for the rest of your fucking life. that is an absurd thing to ask of anyone. without trying to deminish the importance of the damage alcoholism/drug abuse has on your life, it's unlikely anyone involved in big money party life is going to be 100% sober 100% of the time. it must be nice not being an addictive personality and being able to judge others.
take for example drew barrymore. she was one of those kid stars that unfortunately fell into the party life, but amazingly was able to pull herself up out and now has an amazing career. but she still has an occasional drink/party night without everyone coming down on her like she's some kind of evil criminal asshole. i don't like lindsay but let's be rational.

When you're in recovery you don't drink - PERIOD - regardless of the date on the calendar. One little drink can easily turn into disaster. Most addicts have to go through several relapses before staying clean and sober for good. Let's hope she learns from this slip up, moves on and start over again.

As someone who has a 18 year old daughter who has fought addiction (has been clean almost 2 years) let me tell you this can happen. It is called a lapse not a relapse. If it happened how it is stated that she did drink that night but called her sponsor etc they are correct in that she is dealing with it correctly and it is not like a bender.

If Lindsay is serious about her recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction, she needs to avoid situations that might lead to a relapse. Hanging in clubs on New Years Eve is a bad idea for someone in recovery a short time.

I'm sick & tired of people saying, "But it was NYE" & trying to justify her swig of that bottle. She's an alcoholic people! Even one swig is all it takes. Not only that, if she was serious about staying sober she wouldn't be there in the first place. She knew there would be alcohol so why put yourself inn that position in the first place. She hasn't even been out that long & she's already had a slip. AA is a crock of shit. The statistics suggest that alternative (non-abstinence) treatments and spontaneous (non-treatment) recovery, both offer significantly better outcomes than AA, in terms of the ceasing of addiction behavior and lower fatality rates. Yes, you're even more likely to DIE while in AA, than if you did absolutely nothing to address your addiction. The principals it employs are basically cult-like, and at it's worse dismantle the alcoholics sense of agency and responsibility. There is quite a bit of writing on this which I recommend you look at if you're interested.
So to all them people crapping on about AA…You really ought to do some research and stop swallowing the bullshit fed to you by so-called authorities. The evidence suggests it's a dangerous organization that shouldn't be accepted unquestioningly as the paradigmatic model for addiction treatment. Yet it is. Scary stuff.

I have a cousin who was heavily into drugs and alcohol so I (as many of us have) have seen addiction first hand and let me say, if Lindsay really stopped herself and called her sponsor, that is HUGE. It's easy to say to yourself "It's only one drink. It's only one special night." But that can be just the beginning of something much worse. She seems like she's really dedicated to staying on the higher path with this and she has all of my respect for taking the huge steps on the road to sobriety.
Only a slip, and the fact that she shut it down immediately is a really good sign. The New Year's Eve party should probably get the most blame for the incident, and at least it points out clearly what to avoid. She knows well enough there's really no other option and no in-between zone.

Re: skies – AGREED. AA is just another crutch. Like many people, I have alcoholics in my family and some have been in AA. My sister in particular got hooked on AA. It was strange experience that did feel cult-ish. Ultimately, she removed herself from that situation. She now drinks moderately (instead of completely abstaining from alcohol). There are times when she will lose control and drink too much but she quickly reels herself in and gathers strength, there are no issues of denial. Only an understanding that she is only human and she, as with everyone is on a path to love herself better and make good choices for herself. Being able to decide for yourself and depend on yourself, friends and family (so long as they hold your best interest at heart) is the only healthy way to cure addiction.

I am a recovering alcoholic. I have been sober for 2 years and I slipped up A LOT before I was able to reign it in. Alcoholics drink because they are alcoholics…that's what they do. She shouldn't be crucified because she made a mistake…she should understand that it happens sometimes. Recovery is a struggle and it sometimes takes a while to figure out your new path after living a life that included drugs and alcohol. (I also want to add that I don't think that EVERYONE who uses drugs and alcohol is an addict. Some of us just can't control our use, and WE are the addicts!) I hope she knows that not everyone wants her to fail. Some of us are really pulling for her.
AT LEAST SHE IS TRYING. BEING AN ALCOHOLIC IS VERY HARD TO DEAL WITH AND CONTROL. AT LEAST SHE CAUGHT HERSELF AND GOT HELP BEFORE IT WAS TOO LATE. GIVE THE GIRL SOME CREDIT. PPL ARE SO CRUEL.
