You must watch this vintage interview of Judy Garland from 1967 done by none other than Barbara Walters. They talk about the media, being hounded, the paparazzi, drugs and the cult of celebrity. It draws so many parallels to Brit Brit!

Judy was high as a kite during the interview. She died about a year after.

Sad.

This is to offer a correction to poster #19. The girl next to Judy is Lorna Luft, Judy's middle child, the daughter of movie producer Sid Luft. Liza's dad was Vincente Minnelli, who won an Oscar for directing Gigi (best picture of 1958).
Another parallel between the two women was that Judy was pushed into show business by a stage mother and performing full time by age 6. Read Judy's autobiography…makes the stuff that goes on with today's stars pale in comparison.

Yeah, she' impared. But she's no Britney. Judy Garland was far more intelligent, talented, and beautiful (the hair and makeup are dated, but she looks better in this interview than Brit of late).

This should really be a warning to Britney. Garland was superior to her in every way, and she ended up young and dead. I'm not optimistic that Spears will escape the same fate. Hope I'm wrong.

Man, I love Judy and even though it makes my skin crawl when I first heard about Britney I started thinking about Judy and all her problems too. But at the end of the day I don't think it's a good analogy. Sure they're both child stars that grew up to have plenty of problems, but as stars they were very different. Britney was the blonde virgin/vixen and her sex appeal was always at the forefront of her act while Judy (apart from being supremely talented and classy) was always insecure because she was always surrounded by beautiful leading ladies at MGM and didn't think she was pretty enough. Which is kind of ironic because, high or not, in that interview she looks stunning. Personally I think the better analogy would be Britney and Lana Turner, but that's just my opinion.
