Another casualty of the writers' strike and big media's unwillingness to negotiate.

One of the leading payroll companies in Hollywood has just closed its doors!

CLICK HERE to read all about it.

A tipster writes in….

"One of the things I think is GREAT is that you report on MANY business aspects of the industry that have an affect on everyone out here. I'm not sure if you heard about this yet, but as of 6pm last night, Axium (one of the few MAJOR payroll companies for the entertainment industry) told it's employees to gather their personal things, stop what they were working on and leave the building. They have shut their doors. Axium has branches all over the world: New York, Louisiana, London etc… If you call any of those offices today you will only get a message saying that their offices are closed. This is going to have a HUGE impact on the industry. MANY MANY tv shows, feature films, reality shows etc… use Axium to pay their employees AND actors. Anyone working on a show that gets their payroll from Axium can no longer count on their paychecks showing up. To top this all off, NO ONE (not Variety, Hollywood Reporter etc…) is reporting on this. The major players around town DO know about it (I know one major company in town is VERY aware of what is going on but is NOT volunteering the information to their employees since they're afraid they'll stop working) but have no further information. This is going to have a MAJOR impact on the industry."

We've tried calling Axium but have been unable to get through to anyone in any of their offices.

As VB would say, this is mayjah!

Yes, always blame the company. It seems to me the greed of the writers is more to blame. How many people have lost their jobs due to their greed? How many events will be cancelled because of their greed? I don't feel the slightest bit sorry for these people. I hope they all get fired right before christmas (Next year of course)

    30. STOP UNION PROPAGANDA! says – reply to this

      30

STFU already you whiny ass babies. The GREEDY WRITERS are causing this - wanting to be paid 100 times over for their work so they can make a living while they are NOT working (gee wouldn't we all LOVE that!!).

    31. me says – reply to this

      31

That is interesting news, but at least in California, there are very very strict payroll laws by which the company will have to abide. Its not as though there is no money - there is just no one processing it. The clients will merely go to another payroll company - few days of confusion will probably be the only impact.

    32. obsessed says – reply to this

      32

What the writers are asking for is not at all unreasonable. There would be no shows, no movies, nothing without them. The writers deserve one of, if not the BIGGEST cuts of the money.

Many small production houses are going to be screwed and will probably go under…..Greedy Bastard

    38. Krissy says – reply to this

      38

The writers were getting 4 cents for online media, and they want 8 cents! (How is that being paid 100 times over?) How can you call the writers greedy when the producers are making TONS OF MONEY from the advertising space online?

The PRODUCERS SUCK and are waaaaay too greedy. WGA has made individual agreements with several production companies, which shows they are willing to negotiate.

    42. Cdg says – reply to this

      42

This is a response to #13 and everyone else who seems to think the writers are overpaided babies…

Contrary to what you seem to believe writers DO NOT make good money. Its the rare few that actually make a lot of money. If you want to talk about greed talk about the companies that employ the writers. The ones who pull in millions and billions of dollars, the ones who make money off syndicating shows and just regular broadcasting, the ones who make way more then what they should. Without writers these shows would be nothing. You need to start with a script before you can do anything. And a good script makes a good show, a good show makes the MONEY.

Writers are not being treated fairly and are NOT being paid fairly. They deserve the wages they are asking for…
this is the 'companies' fault. Not the writers…

      48

ok, so it's not like all of these writers didn't know what they were getting into when they took the damn job. So now, since a show makes more money than expected or a movie ends up making more than triple the projections, they suddenly deserve more??? So now, since they aren't doing shit and dragging in the Union, no one is making any money, so if they think they are going to get more when they aren't producing any income for anyone. So any independent writers out there, becasue the future of film and tv is looking pretty grim??

that writers don't just write what they want, if the pilots fail its because the COMPANIES came up with a shitty idea. nobody questions the companies that produce garbage, yet ppl are quick to blame the writers for not writing a good enough script. and speaking from what i do know about writers, only the ones that get to work on a big production hit movie can make up to $200,000, the rest are mere mortals like yourself.

    68. NJK says – reply to this

      68

#52, they're not just not "issuing paychecks to the writers"; the strike has managed to shut down 80+ entire TV show crews at an average of what, 150 production and 100 post? so that's 20K folks a week who aren't getting checks cut. However, I suspect Axium's problems didn't start with the strike but were merely pushed over the edge by it.

Interesting. Just called Axium's Vancouver office (Vancouver has the 3rd largest prod centre after NYC and LA) and while the VM comes on there is no mention of the offices being closed.
I highly doubt this is related to the writers strike at all. Those who have worked in the industry for years have suffered through the DGA and SAG strikes in the past without this affect.

    73. Cheryl says – reply to this

      73

I am tire of hearing abt the writers strike. Lets face it, our society is so screwed up when writers, acters get paid 6 figures or more to "make believe!" As a representative for disability individuals, who by the way.. sometmes must wait THREE long years without any income … I say get over it, get over yourself! I could give two shits whether or not TV exist. Perhaps with all the reruns, the whole thing will back fire and people will actually start communicating! Do you know you waste more brain cells watching TV then you do sleeping! Writers, acters…get a grip, your job does NOT save lives and lives do not depend on you being there.
And Pereze…perhaps if we stop following Britney…maybe she too would go away…OVER IT!

    74. Krissy says – reply to this

      74

KOKO…I actually am quite educated on the subject.
You are the one who needs more educating…suggesting that people will have to pay for Youtube. What a CROCK OF POO! Consumers "pay" for You Tube by being exposed to advertisements. Advertising space is how the producers make their money online. If you stream an episode online, you HAVE to sit through commericals.

Bottom Line, WGA DESERVES TO BE PAID FOR THE PRODUCT THEY CREATE. (And BTW, most writers make $40,000 a year, not $200,000!)

      76

Re: you do realize – Well you don't know much about writers then, becuase actually, the EP/showrunner usually comes up with the idea not the company, and there are many many TV writers (including lowest-level staff writers) making $200k+.

    77. Anonomous says – reply to this

      77

Though it is a convenient excuse, the closure of Axium International has NOTHING to do with the WGA strike. Sadly, it has a lot more to do with greed and gross corporate mismanagement. The owners and higher-ups at Axium knew that the company was going under and did nothing to notify their staff, which was mostly made up of extremely hard-working people who were the sole bread-winners in their households. Hopefully, the worst is yet to come to Axium as I expect lawsuits to start pouring in from their former employees and business partners.

I am happy to finally hear you reporting on others affected by the stike other than the "poor" writers. Any writer on a network show is clearing AT LEAST six figures plus residuals. There are a lot of us out here (such as myself- wardrobe) who dont make nearly that much, nor are we collecting any residual income while all of these greedy f*ucks have a pissing contest. Thank you for posting a story about the people who are REALLY suffering.

I competely support the writer's strike. Why the fuck should the big studios/producers rake in more money then the writers, when its the writer's words they're making money off. I know thousands are currently jobless, but it shows how important the writers are.

They are taken for granted and defo deserve a higher %age on dvd sales and internet sales etc. IT'S THEIR WORDS/STORIES THAT WE ARE ALL ENGROSSED BY!

Re: Krissy – Your brain is a "CROCK OF POO" - writers (or any talent for that matter) do not share in ANY advertising revenue on air so why would they be entitled to it from online, mobile or any other media?? Demanding ad revenue is a joke and a total stonewall to this whole process. And by the way the minimum episodic rate for writers is about $40k so if you are talking about someone who writes ONE TV EPISODE per year for work they should maybe think about pursuing another career, YOU THINK!!

to be fair it could be said both sides are greedy.

The networks won't even negotiate. If you were being bullied at school would you just give the bully your lunch money so it doesn't happen to the kid who sits next to you. You might actually try to negotiate a truce. At this point who started the fight is irrelvant and someone needs to step in and get both parties to act rationally.

who really cares other than the parties involved? they are both being greedy! get your heads out of your asses both sides and agree on something other than disagreeing. besides neither side is risking life or limb in their jobs so come on already. Try being in the military, police officer, fireman etc. When you don't know if your loved one is coming back from war that is something far greater to be concerned with than if you are getting 4 cents or 4 dollars from every DVD sold!!!

Those fucking writers are ruining alot of other people's lives because of their outrageous greed. Julianne Moore is just the kind of self righteous bitch to back these fuckers. She's an ugly old prune with little talent. GET BACK TO WORK AND SAY THANKYOU, BOSS!!!

How come, at no point, do the writers ever admit they got paid for doing the work? Its always 'we need this money' 'we want fair compensation', etc. You know what? They got paid (in some cases ALOT) to do a job and they did it. Same as you and I. That fact, however, never seems to make their press.
