According to a new report from Entertainment Tonight, Unfitney started speaking in that British accent she does when she was hospitalized last week after taking her children hostage.

The British accent can be part of a manic cycle experienced with Bipolar disorder. Bipolar patients can experience psychotic symptoms (i.e. hallucinations, bizarre behavior), but are not necessarily schizophrenic or dissociative. My money would be on Bipolar Disorder with psychotic features.

It would not be surprising if Britney did have schizophrenia, which, as many others have already made clear, is NOT the same as multiple personality disorder or its current DSM-IV-TR label, Dissociative Identity Disorder. If Britney were schizophrenic, she would have delusions, hallucinations, and respond to internal stimuli. There have been reports of Britney talking to herself in strange voices and exhibiting bizarre behavior. She could also have schizoaffective disorder, in which she would have symptoms of both schizophrenia AND bipolar disorder with the bipolar affect being of distinct prominence. Schizophrenic breaks generally occur in the late teens and early 20s so this would make a LOT of sense.

…there has only been a limited number of cases linked to FAS one of them is bipolar disorder…in any event….she needs help there is something really wrong with her….I think people expect too much from someone who really isnt all that talented anyway, her voice is automated, she could dance ok, but I mean really…what was ever so great about Britney? and why do we spend so much time on her….if we spent as much time on things like cancer, HIV, alzheimer's maybe there would be a cure for some of the real problems in the world.

first of all, it's not called multiple personality disorder anymore, it's called dissociative identity disorder (DID), which is a dissociative disorder. secondly, DID is something completely different from schizophrenia, which is a form of psychosis. third, substance use can induce symptoms of mood disturbance, psychotic features, and dissociation. therefore, no one can really be sure what's going on with Britney clinically. especially not the public. and ESPECIALLY non-professionals like gossip columnists …

I have bipolar disorder and have been saying that Britney was probably bipolar for well over a year now. She needs to be medicated properly by a psychiatrist, and also have a psychotherapist to help her learn new coping skills with behavior modification. Schizophrenia is not the same as dissasociative identity disorder - which I'm sure you meant when you said multiple personality, Perez - and although a person with bipolar can exhibit symptoms of these other disorders, it is not the same. My wish is that Britney gets to a qualified psychiatrist who will treat her condition appropriately, especially considering the rumor is that she's being given an antidepressant with anti-anxiety medication, which is not the treatment for bipolar; she would need to be on a mood stabilizer to quiet the mania and then also have an antidepressant if she suffers from depressive periods, too. I know this because the first psychiatrist I ever went to did the same thing to me. (Diagnosed me as depressed and anxious, not bipolar.) All he did was make me manic - not being depressed anymore - with nothing to help the mania. I'd love to reach out to Britney, to give her the benefit of my experience, but what I can do is pray for her. A ton of people read your blog daily, Perez, so please try to educate yourself a bit before making "stereotypical" - and erroneous- comments about such sensitive topics as mental health.
