Katharine McPhee has been dropped by her record label!

The singer came in second on American Idol, losing out to Taylor Hicks, who also recently was dropped by his label, as was other Idol champ Ruben Studdard.

The Idol machine is failing.

As the new season is set to debut….

Are you looking forward to the return of American Idol????

I don't think I would say Idol is failing as it has brought us Carrie Underwood, Kelly Clarkson, Chris Daughtry, Fantasia, and Jennifer Hudson! All extremely successful! I love Idol!!!!!!!!!!!

Daughtry was and still is pimped by Clive Davis. All TPTB this of are $$$, which the artist gets very little of because the management gets most of it.

I am so, so, so unbelievably sick and tired of American Idol and I just wish this shit would go away!!!!!!!!!!!!
The boring, dull, meaningless, repetitive and pathetic! American Idol jumped the shark ages ago and why it takes so much room on the airways absolutely boggles me. Even here in Canada the show is on perpetually, to the extent that it feels as though CTV has an American Idol infection.
The show is all about selling audiences sub-standard, over produced, bad music. Beyond that, this show does nothing but exploit people, a lot of whom can be perceived as mentally unstable. I hate this shit and I want it to die

      113

NO!!! When Melinda Doolittle left, it was like Loserville, here we come. I would buy a CD of Melinda, but where the hell is she? All these idiots are ramming CDs of Blake and Jordan and Taylor and that idiot from Alabama who had long hair and you knew he smelled bad down our throats. But where is Melinda? And where is the Lakisha. These were the only two last year who really had it going on. Blake and Jordan would make lovely Homecoming King and Queen (Queen and Queen, actually). But that's it.

Idol and America's next top model are the same. Both are entertaining to watch. But Idol can't get top talent and America's Next top model can't get legitimately pretty girls. Well, they're pretty but not model material. And the idols are star material.

    15. Bonnie says – reply to this

      115

Let's face it…without American Idol these "artists" would not have a chance to fail, as they never would be signed by a record company. The failure is just that more public. I can't wait for the new season.

    16. Ummmm says – reply to this

      116

How is the Idol system failing? Kelly Clarkson is struggling but she still is a major star. Carrie Underwood is blowing up the charts and picking up award after award. Chris Daughtry is a major artist as well. Yes, some of the other artists haven't found major fame but would Diana Degarmo been on Broadway (in Hairspray) if it weren't for Idol? She'd still be in an Atlanta suburb. Frenchie would still be posing for nudie pics but she has a steady gig on Broadway as does Fantasia and now, Ruben. Broadway isn't the top of the charts but it is still a pretty great place to be working. Ask the thousands of people who would give anything for that kind of work.
I think Idol is good in that it gives people exposure when they never would have had a chance at any kind of fame. It's what they do after that decides if they fail or suceed.

American Idol has become a fad. Ya like it one minute and then about a year later, it's like "who cares?" I never liked the show. It isn't fair to ppl who work their ass off, but now that I look at it, those winners from AI are getting bit in the ass later. Haha. The show is stupid. Just another fake show like every other fake reality show on tv nowadays. I hope I see the end of it sometime in the near future.

      126

FUCKING BULLSHIT. I am SICK of this show. Why? Because I was involved in the music business for 7 years and I happen to appreciate REAL TALENT. No, that doesn't mean putting on a floozy outfit, tons of make-up, and tra-la-laing around a stage lip-synching. Where is the real music these days? COUNTRY should stay COUNTRY. No crossing over into the lame pop music. That's the problem with the music business. Everyone is listening to what other people want from them instead of saying no, this is how I want it. I'm the talent, this is what I want. Jot your OWN shit down and STICK TO YOUR TRUE ROOTS! If you want to sing twang country, stick to that! If you want to be a rapper, stick to it and don't make your songs sound like pop-rap from the ghetto with nothing to fall back on but loud, lame bass and bumping thumping in the songs. That's all the rap songs are about these days. Either hard times, or just a bunch of random bullshit. The music business is falling apart and i'm not sure when or where it started. It's sad. I quit because I got burnt out on the fact things were changing. America doesn't need more Kelly Clarksons. She has a fabulous range in her voice but her vocals are over-shadowed by either the lame messages in her songs, or the fact they just aren't good enough to receive requests. I mean look at the people who have won Idol. You don't hear much from them after the spazzle dazzle fades out a year (or less) later.

She could have had a decent career, but it's obvious that's not something she wanted. She's stupid. She's so young…she could have made several million then give it up. Dumb, dumb, dumb. That's what happens when you get bad advice or decide to marry a guy who could be your Dad!

Wow, she got pulled too, eh? With Katherine McPhee, it seemed like she was more interested in strictly media attention versus establishing a career as a singer.

Making a living in music, not about being famous or rich. If you love it, you will do it regardless. I hope they all saved their money and did not blow it. When they get going with the finalists its always a different theme and it's fun to pick a person and root against the one my co-worker picked. They need to change the voting system though. I am not a chris daughtry fan, but my son is — he knows where he's performing, songs, etc., I don't. as far as I'm concerned, daughtry has disappeared because he's not on MY stations. see how that works?

no shocker. she didn't even have enough of a following to tour and first cd was karaoke candy-ass crap.

      153

For every Katharine McPhee, Taylor Hicks and Ruben Studdard, there's a Kelly Clarkson, Clay Aiken (whose appeal escapes me but he has been successful), Carrie Underwood and Chris Daughtry, so I think it's highly inaccurate to say that the Idol "machine" is failing. It's created four successful music stars out of people who may not have otherwise been discovered. It's just not consistent, but that's part of the allure - to see who will make it and who won't.

      154

You already have Hicks and Mcphee fans putting major spins on things. But I'm reminded so much of Diana Degarmo these last few weeks. She was dropped by RCA, and happy to be finally making music her way. There was all this talk about interest from new labels, and major projects in the works that never materialized. At least Bo Bice did get re-signed, even if his new CD is tanking. We can probably expect more of the same.

I won't be watching this new season. Anyway, the auditions with all the talentless, delusional wanna-bes are the only fun part. What were Mcphee's sales? Like 350K or so? Platinum sales are needed just to break even. The real money is made touring. That Mcphee's management never bothered touring her demonstrates the little faith they had in any profitability. I'd be shocked if another major takes a chance on such an artist. Instead you start back at the bottom with everyone else, or settle for background status.

I just think that this show goes wrong in trying to make someone have a career afterwards. Why not just have the show be an issolated thing and the winner wins like money or something. Like if we gave the winner a million dollars they would not be inclined to make shitty music….maybe they would just do some indorment ads for Candies and then go live in Hawaii or something. It's just a weird jump from singing hits of our time to trying to have your own.

Country music is in a different class. that's why Carrie and that other blonde do well. Old people don't mind carbon copies.

But us young kids want something to relate with. Like good music….

The only reason I am looking forward to the return of IDOL is Simon Cowell. He tells it like it is and furthermore is always RIGHT! People love to hate him but I love to love ya, baby. He is funny, spot-on and candid. How refreshing in today's world? And he even predicted that Carrie Underwood would be the best-selling IDOL. She has a lot of staying power. The others should learn that fame is a fickle bedfellow and that every IDOL has their day (even Kelly Clarkson needs a "comeback" at this point. The dregs will likely be singing in karaoke bars or on cruise ships for the rest of their lives but they could probably earn a decent enough income from professional singing. Few pop idols have any staying power whether they crash and burn by their own devices (a la Britney) or the public just loses interest. But hey, they've had their 15 minutes of fame, perhaps a bit more, and should be grateful for their opportunities.

"The Idol machine is failing" is a typically ignorant Perezism. It depends on your definitions of failure & success. Each season has created mega-stars, and thel contest winners are not necessarily the most successful. Talent is discovered, and some manage to parlay that into a successful recording career; some don't. Just like in the real world. Country is selling well - Carrie Underwood is a country superstar. Kelly Picker & Bucky Covington are doing well. Chris Daughtry is huge. Kelly Clarkson is still a star. Clay Aiken has a big following. Fantasia is a broadway star, and Lakisha and Anthony Federov are also on Broadway. Kat McPhee has 4 movies coming out in 2008. Idol success stories abound. Idol producers are shedding no tears over the ones who don't become major stars within 2 years.

OK.. who gives a shit if you are the first to comment or not?! Anyway, on to my point. I think that American Idol was great for awhile but America got so STUPID about who they voted for. I MEAN COME ON… Taylor Hicks beat out Chris Daughtry… WHAT WAS AMERICA thinking?! Look who is on top now! It sure isn't Taylor Hickville. I love watching American Idol to see if I can spot a winner in the beginning which I did 2 seasons ago. Too bad America didn't see it my way! I know some of you HATE Kelly Clarkson, but she was and still is what an AMERICAN IDOL should be. I think if any of you actually went to one of her shows… you would know she is FOR REAL! And she is extremely talented. I saw one of her shows a couple years ago.. going reluctantly.. and BAM! I was turned into a fan! She blew me away. I cried, I laughed and it was soooo fun! Her voice is amazing. It's real and its raw! Its in your face! It's not lip singing and fake ass dance moves! It was a REAL show! Have ANY other American Idols done that? NOT QUITE!!! Instead the underdogs are coming out on top! Which, in my opinion Chris Daughtry should have come out on top in the beginning, but of course the old ladies LOVED Taylor Hickville. Give it up!!!! Soo… I guess i'm a little excited about the show, but then I may be disappointed in America's voting again this year! Guess we will see!

Such a dumb post. You know nothing about the music industry Perez so stay out of it. For your information, Idol is the biggest success machine this industry has seen for yeeeeeeeeeears (decades even). The sales level of Kelly, Carrie, Daughtry and Clay combined blows away most other ENTIRE LABEL'S sales records in the past few years.

Are you retarded? Really, are you?

Just stick to reporting on the ONE thing you are good for - celeb spottings and gossip. That's ALL.

I wish you would get you facts right about Taylor. He had his team get him out of that contract which was so unprofessional and unhelpful. Who ever heard of a winner not getting a video or a leading single before his album came out and yet he still sold 827,000 worlwide. Some failure that. Look at the present Idol with 340,000 after nearly 3 months. I think the days of over 1 million for the winner are over. Taylor will be successful as he has the Soul Patrol which has doubled in size and who are eagerly awaiting his new material in anticipation. His own compilations were the best in any event and he knows how to produce an album.

They tried to create her a sellable persona, sexy, when she is NOT. Pretty, yes, good voice, yes, but not at all unique, nor interesting. Maybe she should find her own style herself. Phonyness comes through the screen.

I hate what Clay A. became. Don't understand what's the fuss about him. I have to recognize that he hit the nail in the head finding his style.

Kelly is the most sucessful idol, Carrie is second, Clay is third and Chris Daughtry is fourth.

Kelly has sold well over 16 million albums, Carrie has sold about 13 million
Chris' debut has sold 3 million so far

I don't really think you can say its failing… it gives people an opportunity to show that they are either capable of making it in the music business, or not. Look at kelly clarkson, carrie underwood and chris daughtry. None of those three would have been where they are (super successful) without the opportunity they were given there. BUT, the difference is, they were marketable from the start, and just needed the opportunity to get exposure. Taylor Hicks just isn't someone who fits into todays market, and winning AI doesn't change that. So i think the show is successful only to the extent that the people who are voted on are actually marketable in today's music business.

I will watch if they'll do some songs that are not from the 20's for god's sakes. These contestants don't know who Cole Porter is! Or probably not even Kenny Rogers, Burt Bacharach, or even Barry Manilow or Diana Ross! It seemed some of them didn't know who Rod Stewart was! Need newer songs, people!

american idol is only good for the hilarious auditions, after that it produces nothing but wash ups (with the exception of carie underwood)
