Golf Channel anchor says young golfers should 'lynch Tiger Woods'

What is it about Duke? Okay, maybe that's not fair. But it did make me scratch my head and wonder when I read what Kelly Tilghman (pictured with Arnold Palmer), a former Blue Devil golfer, said on the Golf Channel last Friday during her gig as co-lead announcer for the network's telecast of the Mercedes-Benz Championship, the PGA Tour's inaugural event of the season.

I have not seen the clip, nor do I know the context of the remarks. This is what I know — that Tilghman, who never played on the LPGA Tour, said golf's young players should "lynch Tiger Woods in a back alley."

Had Woods been white, to use the most heinous crime committed in this nation to illustrate God-knows-what point would have been egregious. But that he's not makes the remark unconscionable. And punishable.

It would be a travesty if Tilghman is allowed to broadcast the next event for the Golf Channel. (It speaks volumes already that she was allowed to sit on the air all day Saturday, as if nothing happened. She then offered an on-air apology Sunday but still did the entire telecast.)

At minimum, a suspension is in order. Some will surely call for a firing. If the network does nothing — just months after the Jena Six dominated the nation's airwaves — it would make a significant statement about the network's tolerance of such actions. A statement that would hurt the sport of golf and rekindle memories of a racist history that Woods' success has helped it begin to move past.

Doing nothing would remind us of Fuzzy Zoeller
Doing nothing would remind us of Shoal Creek.
Doing nothing would not be smart.

Okay, so it's just the Golf Channel. And Kelly Tilghman is simply a hottie that was given an opportunity to anchor a telecast because she can swing a golf club.

That is not the point. Tolerance at any level cannot be tolerated.
Your move, GC.

Tilghman has reportedly reached out to Woods to apologize. Here's hoping, at least for the moment — until the Golf Channel makes its statement — that he does not accept the call. Or the apology.

oh, get over it. to say the word lynch … is not necessarily racist. to figuratively talk about lynching someone is also not necessarily racist. the chick slipped up, give her a break. you, yourself said that you were unaware of the context. this chick's just trying to make some money just like you … just like the rest of us. get off of her back.

As a woman who is with-it and middle aged, I am sick of watching young women take for granted what other women have fought for all along: equal opportunities. Unfortunately, some privileged women get to the top and quickly decide it's okay to do exactly what women have fought against for decades. Kelly made a choice and the Golf Channel should NOT tolerate this pathetic lack of judgment. It really has little to do with Tiger Woods. It has everything to do with honor, integrity, professionalism and what the sport of golf represents in our nation and the world. Why would we want HER to represent ANY of our interests? To me, Kelly is as self-absorbed as a person can get, and her "apology" came across as an excuse. It wasn't an apology at all. For the Golf Channel to support her now is inexcusable. She's the wrong person for the job, for golf, for TV and for our nation. Fire her.

Some of you are so stupid. Of course it matters that she said "lynch" to the one black dude on the screen jack asses. If you ac tually had any sort of historical understanding of race in America you would understand that somethings are not PROFESSIONAL OR APPROPRIATE to do at work.

This is her job. It's a public job on tv, where she represents her company. No company wants someone so dumb ass as to say lynch to the lone black guy on the screen to represent them. It's called bad business.

This has nothing to do with free speech, but basic professional behavior 101. She's a dumb ass, she should be fired for being that stupid.

of course she probably didn't mean for it to be racist, stupid posters. That's beside the point.

The point is she did say something that is so dumb it's almost laughable. How stupid does she have to be to let lynch come out of her mouth in regards to Tiger? That's so g-damn stupid, it's annoying. B itch shouldn't have a microphone. Period.

Yeah, she's trying to make some money. But she's really bad at making it obviously if she's paid to be a commentator and the first thing to fly off her mouth casually is "lynch" when speaking about someone black. that's how NOT to make some money, by being a dumb fuck.

FREEDOM OF SPEECH? WHAT THE F— ARE YOU EVEN TALKING ABOUT??? SHE WORKS FOR A PRIVATE CORPORATION. IF SHE'S MAKING THAT CORPORATION LOOK BAD, OF COURSE THEY CAN CENSOR HER EXPRESSION IN ANY WAY THEY WANT. FREEDOM OF SPEECH IN THE WORKPLACE IS NOT-NOT-NOT-NOT A RIGHT. YOU CAN SAY WHAT YOU WANT, BUT YOU WILL SUFFER THE CONSEQUENCES IF YOU SAY OFFENSIVE OR STUPID THINGS.

Get you facts straight before you call for her firing or make a posting about a news story. Stick to the bull sh%t gossip you're so good at and stay away from sports…
Kelly Tilghman had no ill intentions and Tiger accepted her appology. Watch the video at the very least before you write such a dumb posting. Learn the facts, moron.
