After discussing this issue extensively in Abnormal Psychology class, it is true that you can die from trying to recover from alcoholism, but recovering from heroin is similar to having a bad flu for a few days. As long as the conditions are right: 1) you have to have a safe source to get drugs from 2) Your suppliers aren't criminals and 3) if the cost were manageable

Long-term alcohol abuse is much more physically addictive and dangerous to give up on your own. Depending upon the level of addiction, if a person gave it up, "cold turkey," they could die. Coming down off heroin is very uncomfortable but not physically fatal.
She's actually right, sort of. Herion (in its pure form) does no long term damage to the BODY- it damages the opiate receptors in the brain, causing an addiction for life, however. Not to mention, of course, the dangers of overdose or transmissions of diseases through needles. Alcohol, on the other hand, not only damages multiple tissues within the body, but it damages opiate, dopamine, serotonin and other receptors in the brain. There is evidence that some of the damage from alcohol is reversable over time, but if the addiction in the opiate receptors is severe, it can have the same life-long effects as heroin. There is just as strong a possibility of overdose with alcohol as with heroin also.
Her body (too thin) looks like the stereotypical herion user. And dear gawd, besides looking unhealthy her hair is beyond damaged! She's another poster child for needing professional help.

Ugh. I hate to agree with Amy Winehouse about ANYTHING, but on this, she's actually right. Heroin is much easier on the body than alcohol is. Alcohol destroys pretty much every system of the body while heroin doesn't. The problems with heroin lie in what it's cut with, overdoses, and the inevitable depravity of addiction. It doesn't take a junkie to do the research and know what the effects of various drugs and alcohol are on the human body. (Not that I'm saying Amy's not a junkie.)

She's correct. Heroin (diacetylmorphine) has no neuro- or hepa-toxic effects, and is perfectly safe in doses that don't cause excessive respiratory depression (leading to death in some cases). The danger with heroin is the garbage that street dealers cut it with, and the unclean lifestyle lived around needles, the street, and trying to procure the daily money required to prevent withdrawal.
Heroin itself is not toxic in any way, alcohol on the other hand, IS hepatoxic AND neurotoxic.

how would you know? unfotunatly i know a handful of people who have taken heroin longer than i've been alive. The makority look like normal, respectable citizens - nobody would even have a clue about their heroin addictions. A person can take a relatively small dose on a regular basis for years and years- perhaps till old age- without any apparent health problems caused by it..let alone death…know your facts…
p.s. amy is on many drugs, and doesn't take them in a responsible or controlled manner…that is the difference

Believe it or not, she's right. I've been doing heroin for years, am 27, but look like I'm 23 and am in PERFECT health. Of course I only use new sterile needles and I take good care of myself, but I have friends who use alcohol 2-4 times a week at bars and clubs, and their minds are showing the signs and they look a good ten years older than they are. I know I'll get lots of arguments for this, as it's hard for someone who's never done heroin for any amount of time to understand. And yes, you can use the OD argument, but you just have to know how much you're taking and what you're taking and start off slow. People DO OD, and yes, heroin CAN ruin lives, but so can alcohol. And like Amy says, long-term use of alcohol is more physiologically damaging. It ruins the liver and causes cirrhosis. It's just a slow death, and thus less noticeable in the short-term. So though Amy will no doubt catch alot of heat for this, she speaks from experience, and she speaks the truth.
To the person who said there are no old junkies: William Burroughs was a junkie for dozens of years, until the day he died, and he died a very old man. He had enough money to procure good heroin, and take care of himself otherwise, and it had no effect on his body, and certainly not on his mind - he was also a brilliant writer until the day he died. Except in cases of overdose, which can happen with ANY drug, even tylenol, it's not the heroin itself that kills, people! It's the lifestyle that comes with having to find money for expensive illegal drugs!

Heroin is one of the "safest" drugs because most addicts only consume small amounts to keep a consistent high, unlike cocaine which most addicts cannot control dosing. Heroin has few side affects that come from it alone, most negative affects come from lifestyle choices associated with the drug: poor nutrition, lack of cleanliness, shared needles, etc. Sounds crazy but it's true, look it up!

Alcohol is a toxin to the system. Heroin is not. "maintenance addicts" show no ill affects from heroin use, unlike people who consume alcohol who overwork their liver (or poison filtration system) from the very first alcohol they ever consume. Is heroin addictive? definitely. But Ms. Winehouse does have her facts correct.
