I don't see the problem. They are not fabricating a lie in saying that she is mentally ill. I also think it great that finally mental illness in this country will get more attention so we can eliminate the stigma associated with having a form of mental illness. It's the 21st Century folks and brains do get sick just like the rest of the body. It's not the fault of the person afflicted.

Hey, all you armchair psychologists who are assuming Britney is bipolar, here's some education on mental illness from a real, licensed therapist (me). It is possible she has bipolar illness. It seems probable she has a polydrug addiction (a few clean drug tests do not eliminate this possibility). But it seems very apparent that she has a personality disorder in what we call the "B" cluster, that is, a personality disorder that may be along the lines of anti-social, histrionic, narcisisstic, and/or borderline personality disorder. ALL of her weird behaviors could be attributable to her personality disorder. The reason why that's important to know is that if she's bipolar, taking meds will help. However, if most of her weird behaviors are attributable to her personality disorder, medication can calm her down a little bit for a little while, but it will not "fix" her, as that's the job of LONG TERM THERAPY. So whether she's bipolar or not, putting her in a psych hospital is not the answer. That is not the place for long term psychotherapy.
