A Little History Lesson

People often ask, "Why do you dislike Jessica "Don't Call Me Latina" Alba so much?"

We'll let her words speak for themselves.

Here are just a few choice quotes from Alba.

She says:

"I've got cousins galore. Mexicans just spread all their seeds. And the women just pop them out."

"My grandfather was the only Mexican at his college, the only Hispanic person at work and the only one at the all-white country club. He tried to forget his Mexican roots, because he never wanted his kids to be made to feel different in America. He and my grandmother didn't speak Spanish to their children. Now, as a third-generation American, I feel as if I have finally cut loose."

"My grandfather was the only one in our family to go to college. He made a choice not to speak Spanish in the house. He didn't want his kids to be different."

"[Before] I always felt like such an outcast and now I feel like people are more diverse ethnically. I was always self conscience of my puffy lips and darker skin when I was a kid, because I felt like I didn't fit in. And now its mainstream, and color isn't as big of a deal and if anything its better."

"My whole life, when I was growing up, not one race has ever accepted me, … So I never felt connected or attached to any race specifically. I had a very American upbringing, I feel American, and I don't speak Spanish. So, to say that I'm a Latin actress, OK, but it's not fitting; it would be insincere."

"Alba is my last name and I'm proud of that. But that's it. My grandparents were born in California, the same as my parents, and though I may be proud of my last name, I'm American. Throughout my whole life, I've never felt connected to one particular race or heritage, nor did I feel accepted by any. If you break it down, I'm less Latina than Cameron Diaz, whose father is Cuban. But people don't call her Latina because she's blonde."

I don't think she's ashamed of her culture. I think she is trying to show that she is an American and that she recognizes the challenges that come with a stigma being attatched to you because you are a certain ethnicity. A lot of people, all colors, are tired of things having to be racial issues. I don't think she's being rude about it, as a matter of fact, I think she did a good job of vocalizing her opinion. What she said about her grandfather makes sense, he was entitled to his opinion on what makes children different. I don't think there's a real argument here on her being racist against hispanics/latinos. She is really just commenting on fact. I don't like her any more or any less for what she said. x

She's right to say what she does. She's an American - a part of a huge melting pot of former nationalities and that's fantastic. I wish you'd start being more positive Perez.

Excuse me, but Martin Sheen and his sons Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez are not mixed race hispanic. Martin Sheen's dad was a Spaniard, Spaniards are European. His mom was European also, so the Martins are simply Spaniard European. Also Joaquin Phoenix is not mixed race hispanic. He was given a spanish sounding name because he was born in San Juan. His parents were hippies and traveled all over the world to have their children.

Why don't you mention that she uses her money to pay for all her cousins to go to college? That's a very decent thing to do.

You're the hypocrite who doesn't use his real last name.

Race is a social construct end of story. That's a fact. There is no scientific correlation in the majority of the categories that have been erected in this society. Unfortunately, perception is reality, but one has to think about what 'reality' really means. Reality is not a generalised concept, in many ways it is individual. This is her personal experience, no offense to the people of America who seem to think that ancestry means more than it really does - African Americans especially when they are several generations removed cannot claim 'Africa' -they can claim that that is their ancestry, but they are not 'African' at the end of the day they are still American. Africa is a continent, not a country and there are many different people with different languages, cultures, etc in other words is very diverse. Similarly, I think that Alba has unlike many people in the US has grasped the concept -she's American plain and simple, it doesn't appear that she is ashamed she just accepts the concept that the US is her country and that she does not particularly ascribe to the race as a social construct. What I would like to know is WHY certain Americans are not proud to be so -they always appear to have to add something on. It's not a crime, if this is your country, its your country plain and simple, its not complicated, so stop making it complicated.

Look, it's bullshit to not be proud of where you came from. But I mean I understand what she's saying. She didn't grow up really identifying with her Mexican side and to be considered a latina actress or to represent Mexicans when she isn't in touch with that side would be a lie. She's just being honest. It's better than her trying to market herself as a Latina actress when she doesn't identify as much with that part of her culture. At least she's not fake.

I think it's high time that America became it's own culture. Just like the Latin culture and the Jewish culture. I don't think there's any problem with what she said. She pretty much said what America is all about. You are just mad because you are Latin and you embrace it. She is Latin and she does not. Deal with it Perez.

  10. Margarita says – reply to this

    610

All she's really saying is that she identifies herself as being an American rather than defining herself as any one specific race.
    .
I can relate to that. For example, my family came over from Italy and they were insistent that the kids learn English and assimilate out of respect for the country that was taking them in and giving them an opportunity for a better life, for both themselves and future generations. The children were not taught Italian, and as soon as they got here, the adult males in my family opted to fight in WWI as Americans.
    .
And so, we call ourselves Americans. And even though we're proud of our Italian heritage, we don't identify ourselves as Italians — we're not Italian nationals and we don't speak Italian.
    .
Sounds like it's much the same approach being taken by Jessica Alba's family regarding their identity. And in my opinion, there's nothing wrong with that.

I don't see anything wrong with what she said. Particularly the last quote. She IS American. Why do we continually seek to label ourselves by the color of our skin? That only serves to further perpetuate racial divisions. Names like Mexican Amercian or African American draw a distinction between us and them, when the reality is that we are ALL Americans. Equal. Who cares what kind of American you are?

Lay off. She's just saying she's as American as the next person, and she shouldn't be treated differently as a minority, since she feels she belongs to the majority.
Sure she comes off kind of heartless to the Latinas in the world, bursting with pride and babies (she's totally right about that), but she's trying to get out of a stereotypical view point. You should be applauding her and not booing her. Tons of celebs have said worse. Why not rip on Dog the bounty hunter for being a racist like everyone else?

  21. michelle says – reply to this

    621

Don't be angry at her, she's being honest about things. The last comment about Cameron Diaz made alot of sense too - only Cam doesn't have to put up with your shit because she doesn't "look" like a stereotypical Latino. If you want to be mad at anyone, be mad at her Grandad for cutting himself out of the culture and thus cutting future generations out also. She's just continuing to live the life she's always led - one where she has never related to the Latino culture.

  22. Lenzi says – reply to this

You are an idiot. Just because she doesn't want to be labled by her race doesn't make her a bitch. You want to make her statements defamatory when they are not! She's trying to say that she is an AMERICAN - not a specific race.

I don't hate her for being a spoiled, intellectually shallow human being who gets far too much credit and has never done anything to help anyone, other then maybe some random charity or there for publicity, I hate her because she is responisble for "Honey", the shiteous fantastic four movies, that new shit she just came out with…she's a horrible actress with limited range and no personality. She's only "famous" for being pretty.

    637

    Hey Perez
I think you're being unfair on her too. She's never said or even suggested that there's anything wrong with being latina, with speaking Spanish, or with being proud of your heritage. She just seems to want to point out that because she wasn't raised speaking Spanish or thinking of herself as Mexican (or Mexican-American), she doesn't feel entirely comfortable being labelled a latina actress. If anything, I think this is RESPECTFUL of latino people — she doesn't want to suddenly claim a cultural identity that she doesn't actually feel. As she says herself, that'd be phony and insincere, and insulting to people who HAVE grown up identifying as latino. It'd be like Jessica Simpson discovering she had a black great-great-great grandmother and suddenly calling herself "black actress Jessica Simpson". Silly, right? You've misinterpreted Jessica's comments, I think — she deserves a break.

That really offends me, being that I'm half mexican and half black, I was always taught by my family to be proud of what you are yeah my mother, grandmother, great grandmother were not born in Mexico but that doesnt' make me less hispanic. I was taught to speak spanish growing up and taught the traditional mexican ways I am very proud of my heritage both, my black side as well. that must be hard to not like who you are and be so confused, her grandfather should be very ashamed the way he raised his children to be ashamed of what they are. I myself feel I have the best of both worlds I feel blessed to be of different backgrounds alot of my family is of different races. Filipino, white , native american, black. We have so much fun and learn from each other's cultures, that's what happens when everyone in the family marrys someone of a different race :D I will raise my son the same way he will know spanish and know all about his black side, hispanic side and native american side. I wouldn't have it any other way. Everybody should know where they come from and be proud, whatever race you happen to be. It's sad she'll probably raise her child the same way she was raised because she doesn't know any better, poor kid:( I side with Perez!!

    she is being real.

the "Latins" are just hating to cover their own self denial, like: "no i'm not indian." or "my grandfather was from Spain." Note to the Carribian Latins: they don't call it an AFRO, because it comes from Spain. You can make your hair strait chemically all you want, and lie to the world, but some of us know your little secrets.

So why is JA hated because she doesn't want to be defined by race? because the Latin American community has a history of blerring the truth where race is conserned, and JA being so real about her background frightens them.

There's nothing wrong with what she said. Her family has assimilated the same way millions of other immigrants have. By speaking English and becoming Americans, they have been able to improve their lives and live the American Dream. There aren't many Americans who identify with the country their ancestors came from. She is a great role model. If more Spanish speakers would follow her grandfather's lead, they wouldn't have to spend their lives mowing lawns, picking fruit, and cleaning toilets.

Just because she does not know Spanish does not make her un Hispanic. Do African Americans who have never been to Africa and have never spoken a word of their native language loose their heritage as African? No. Do Italian Americans who have never visited Italy and don't know Italian suddenly become non Italian? No.

She will never be non Hispanic and the sooner she realizes that the better off she will be. Maybe when she embraces who she is she will finally feel accepted.

Heaven forbid she be proud of who she IS instead of allowing everyone around her to force her to be proud of being "Latin"… um, yeah what country is that from?? Latina? Why does everyone keep trying to elevate their own heratige over anything American. Give up with the "I'm better than you because I'm LATIN. You are Mexican, or Sanish, or whatever. Give her a break and let her be who she is… an AMERICAN.

Mexicans are mestizos right, but they don't like to admit it. They would rather play up their Spaniard side and forget about the Indian side. I have heard Mexicans (mestizos) say the nastiest things about people from San Salvador, simply because they look less White and more Indigenous. Hypocrites!!!

Ok all of these statements just made me like her even more. I was raised in the United States. I am not on welfare and I am a 22 year old working woman. I do not date gang bangers and I do not want to have a baby without a husband and a familily unit. I too am 4th generation mexican american and Californian. I am here I am an AMERICAN CITIZEN not anything else. I do not do welfare or steal, or clean people's houses. I have a good education because my grandparents wanted to be AMERICAN. Not Mexican-American. If others felt this way maybe there would not be some much bs with gangs and theft and all of the negative things people associate with latinos. No one in my family has a chop shop.

Good lord! This poor girl is so ashamed of herself. This is what happens when parents hand down their own self image issues on to their young. Puffy lips? dark skin? she's a mess w/her identity. She'll probably need therapy in less than 10 years. What a shame.

I can actually see where she is coming from. If she didn't feel accepted by the Latin community when she was growing up and wasn't raised with a strong Mexican culture then it makes sense for her to not identify herself as such. She never said she was ashamed of it!

Good for Jessica Alba. I dont see the problem at all. This country is America. We speak English and believe that everyone is equal. Just because she has Hispanic roots doesn't mean she has to speak Spanish…I've got French roots and don't speak French. Hispanic people in America need to learn to speak English. If they wanna keep speaking Spanish, stay in Mexico.

What the…..She is so confused. Okay if I follow her correctly…My father was born in America….My Grandfather was born in America…. I was born and raised in America….where does the race change? I am confused. What does her race have to do with the language or the color of Cameron Diaz hair…..She might as well be a blonde….she just had a dumb blonde moment.

    683

You're being racist by assuming facts about her and the way she "should" be based on the color of her skin and her genetics. Accept her for who she is, not what you think she should be. And for the record - that "Americanization" was the way it used to be. My grandparents were Russian immigrants in the forties. They wanted to be American with all their hearts, and to do so they changed their name and never spoke anything other than English at home. I think of myself as 100% American and am proud of it! Nowadays it's encouraged that you retain your ethnic roots, but it didn't used to be that way. People were ostracized if they seemed different back in the day.

I feel sorry for her. Everyone in the US is from somewhere, and yet we come together and live free in relative harmony. A true American - in its most historical and literal meaning - is someone who came here from somewhere else and laid roots and created a life here. I love this country, but I wouldn't love it nearly as much if it wasn't for the work it took my family to make a life here.

It is a pitty what discrimination can do… push someone to get ashamed of her cultural heritage…. too bad!

also, i see many americans are slightly confused: although old school, negroid, asian, caucasian are races. mexican, italian or swedish are not. they are nationalities.
latino/hispanic is not an ethnicity, it is a cultural label. most people from south america are dark skinned because europeans mixed with indians. but you'll find plenty of people with spanish/portuguese names who are fair-skinned and blond-haired. yeah, the world is a big place, and racial profiling is quite useless.

There is nothing wrong with what she says. I am Italian, a minority here.
My grandfather did not teach my father to speak the language because he wanted to assimilate. This was typical back in the day. I don't know why Perez is so up in arms about it. She has a right to do what she wants with her heritage. But Perez needs to lay off. Not everyone is latin. Or cares about whether she is latin or not. She is a person first.
