Australian media is reporting that Nicole Kidman's father is planning to deliver her child with the help of her mother, as they did for Nic's sister Antonia.
Antony Kidman is a mental health specialist but not a medical doctor. His wife, Janelle, is a trained nurse.
Will they be able to giver her an epidural????
Screw natural. Bring on the painkillers!

Oh yes, childbirth is the most natural and fundamental thing around. Do animals need the ridiculous medical interventions that abound in the U.S.A.? No. And an RN will be certainly perfectly able to diagnose the RARE RARE RARE situation where Nicole might require a hospital transfer, which usually isn't actually required at all, even when done. Lucky Nicole for having such a good role model as her sister, wanting to allow her child a natural entry into the world.

nah!!!! i had my child at home with a midwife. no painkillers. i'm not going to lie. it hurt but nothing i couldn't handle and i know that it was better for my baby. i say good for nicole!!!!! fyi… i'm not a crazy hippie. i'm an educated woman who did tons of research on this topic before deciding to homebirth.

The anesthesiologist gives the epidural, not the doctor who delivers the baby. If her father is a psychiatrist, he is a medical doctor.
I doubt this is even true. Nicole Kidman has probably been labeled a very high risk pregnancy.. with her age and past miscarriages. I am sure they will opt for a hospital delivery in case of complications……. who knows, though?

I had both of my children without drugs. One at a hospital and one at home. The birth at home was 100% better.
My father was present for the home birth. I think during that moment, it isn't the "uck factor" of seeing your daughters cooch. It is seeing your grandchild's entry into the world.
Childbirth IS work, but it is not painful in an unnatural sense. Stayed relaxed and calm can rid your body of 95% of the discomfort. You feel pain only when you are tense and not relaxed. Childbirth is an experience that our bodies are meant to endure. It is nothing like getting teeth yanked out or breaking a bone. Those are not so natural.

I don't care if we were the best MD's in the delivery ward with national recognition. That is all kinds of strange and creepy. Then again this is Nicole Kidman we're talking about. I had to do it naturally and once it started, it was then that they told me "this hospital doesn't provide epidural, etc. I had 26 hours of HARD labor and my father came in, took one look at me and walked out and later said it reminded him of the Exorcist when her head twisted around and she puked up green stuff like in the exorcist (I didn't puke, but alot of profanity was used).
She is a pretty, nice and a very talented woman. And has a hot husband. She's like the fairy princess and all her dreams have come true.
My childhood friend was delivered by her grandfather. He was an actual M.D. But I always thought that was so strange. Like I could imagine wanting family and husband there, but to actually deliver? No. definately not. Maybe he is just going to be there in the room w/ her Mum and Keith? Or maybe being married to that freak Tom Cruise made her a wee bit weird too.

Not to mention, if he is not a medical doctor, or even a trained midwife or doula, if there are problems, which are unfortunately common in geriatric pregnancies, he might not realize it in time then it might be too late to get to a hospital in time to save the baby, should something go wrong. But whatever… if they want to do it this way, that is their decision. If something happens to the baby as a result, they will only have themselves to blame and they'll have to live with it.

If this story is true (and who really knows…), it's probably her mother who will deliver. After all, doctors are usually there only to catch the baby or for complications.
I gave birth without medication to two children. It's hard work and, at times, painful, but with the proper attitude and preparation (Bradley method, in my case), it's not even close to the horror story that most people think it is.
It's just too bad that women are conditioned to believe that they absolutely cannot under no circumstances give birth without being drugged up.

If any of this is to be believed (and who knows if it is…), it is likely that her mother will be the one delivering. Nurses and nurse-midwives do the majority of work in hospital births anyway. Doctors are usually only there to catch the baby or for complications.
I gave birth to two children without any medication. It's extremely hard work and painful at times, but, with preparation it's no where near the horror story that everyone seems to believe it is. Women are conditioned to believe they absolutely could never have a baby without being drugged up.

I am a doula, and natural childbirth is by far the best thing to do for both the mother and the baby. I had one myself and just attended one last week. It is absolutely beautiful and transforming. Yes, it hurts, but it's completely manageable with proper preparation and support. Drugs given through an epidural or any other method go to the baby, whose body weight is much smaller than that of the mother, thus ensuring the baby gets way too much of the drugs. And research shows that homebirth is just as safe - if not safer than hospital birth. All the complications you keep hearing about are usually a result of unnecessary medical interventions. As far as having her father deliver - I say, whatever makes her happy and comfortable! I think it's better to have your father down there, who is only going to think of you as a daughter than a strange male doctor who may be a perv.
