Annie Lennox has been dropped by her record label.

"They totally ignored me," says a jilted Lennox. "It was bizarre. It was a kick in the teeth. They didn't return my phone calls or emails for three weeks. I'm trying to find out what's behind it. Probably a good thing I'm no longer with them - mild understatement."

Bummer.

Hard to believe. Eurythmics was my first concert at 14. Saw her live w/ Sting a few years ago. She sounded absolutely phenomenal. Sony should be ashamed of treating her that way. I'm not surprised. This isn't a knock on her as a talent, but it costs a lot of money to record and promote an album. She simply does not move enough copies to keep it profitable for her label. In the past, this wouldn't matter: 9 out 10 albums lose money, but that 1 album that makes a profit makes enough to cover the losses incurred by the label on it'sother 9 releases.
Because record sales are way down from where they used to be, this isn't a viable model anymore. So the label drops all the artists it doesn't believe will make a profit. Sucks, but it's good business sense.
However, this means the artists can go to a smaller label, with a smaller budget that is more suited to the revenue they can expect to generate, or choose a non-traditional recording and distribution setup for their output.
