A new variety of staph bacteria that is highly resistant to antibiotics and possibly transmitted by sexual contact is spreading amongst gay men in San Francisco, Boston, New York and Los Angeles, researchers reported Monday.

I am a clinical microbiologist. MRSA/ORSA (methacillin/oxacillan resistant staphlococcus aureus) has been around many years and is routinely tested in every hospital microbiology lab. It will not affect a normal healthy person, in fact most people have it on their skin. It will cause massive infections and even death in immunocompromised people. It is not usually passed through sexual contact, though it can be passed from person to person through minor contact or contact with ORSA contaminated equipment. Please don't overreact to this. Though it can be fatal, it rarely is unless you are already very sick. Most people only get this through long periods of being admitted to the hospital.

This post makes me somewhat upset. Perez, I support to the end, but I mean, I currently have this infection and I am a straight woman, who has never even been kissed! It is not just spread through sexual contact! It is extremely contagious, and I'm sure people who have sex spread it faster and easier. It is a frightening infection, but just wash your hands frequently everyone!

antibiotic resistant staph has been around for years. it's the natural evolving process of any bacteria to become resistant over time to antibiotics. THIS IS NOT A GAY ISSUE. it is ignorant and homophobic to present it as a gay issue. anyone can get staph. also at risk is anyone in a hospital or nursing home or anyone who works in a hospital, nursing home, or medical clinic. First of all disease is not a punishment for homosexuality. If that were the case, why aren't lesbians getting this shit? Lesbians are one of the preferred candidates for blood donors.

This is such the media trying to make a story. They don't mention the nursing homes where MRSA has been rampant for 10 years. And hospitals where not a day goes by where you don't have at least someone with MRSA admitted. Trying to spin it to be a "gay disease" is absolutely ridiculous!

Staphylococcus infections have been around indefinately (think boils/pimples). Unfortunately, some staph has mutated to be resistant to the "cillin" antibiotics (ampicillin, penicillin, etc.). Luckily there are still multiple antibiotics that are still effective in treating it (Vancomycin, Zyvox).

Protect yourself the old-fashioned way…wash your hands. Using Purell or even the foams works the best, if used correctly. If you do have a boil or infected area that seems to be growing in size, see your doctor immediately.

I have taken care of patients with MRSA for 12 years and have yet to be infected with it.

MRSA "methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus bacteria" (mur-suh) is not new. It has been recognized for several years, and is predominately passed in environments of high humidity and close human contact. Sports locker rooms and prison environments have been reported as highest risk and have the greatest documented incidents of contraction. Sexual contact (or preference) is not a primary consideration for risk. Informed men already know the facts. Where have you been Perez! Don't start another panic about "gay diseases" because you're behind the curve.
