Not The Grammys Too!!!

xl.jpg

We are 100% in support of the writers' strike, BUT….

The Writers Guild is now fucking with our Grammy Awards!

The WGA has announced plans to picket the ceremony.

How is the music business hurting the striking writers??? It's not!

Sure, the ceremony will air on CBS and the network is part of the big media that is refusing to negotiate with the writers. However, the WGA already said it would refuse to grant the Grammys a waiver that would allow them to use WGA members to write the show.

It's unclear how much of an impact a WGA picket line would have, but the kudocast will have to make do without the usual 10-20 actors who usually serve as presenters. Last year, for example, Quentin Tarantino, Luke Wilson, Nicolas Cage, Terrence Howard, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Rock and David Spade appeared on the show.

This year also has a substantial number of nominated musicians who have appeared in films and on TV. Chief among them are Justin Timberlake, Queen Latifah, Tim McGraw, Beyonce, Jack White, Jon Bon Jovi, T.I. and Fantasia. Among the nominees who have historically not crossed picket lines are Bruce Springsteen, the Beastie Boys, Joni Mitchell, John Mellencamp and Steve Earle.

There is no need to picket the Grammys!

Don't be starting that drama.

Your point can be made without inconveniencing with the public - I'm sick of being the pawn in between the disputes of dickheads. Not just the WGA, but all strikes.

Amen! I'm an actress, so I sympathize and understand the dilemma with the WGA. However, don't f with the Grammy's. THe WGA is already putting over 10,000 people out of work in Hollywood, so just let this one go, writers. Let it GOOOOO!

I have moved on. My once beloved shows are now distant memories. I will not pick them up when the writers decide to come back. Therefore, I don't feel punished because the Grammy's are canceled.

So the WGA would picket something that doesn't affect their business, and the only outcome would be that the movie stars could not present like usual, which affects the SAG.

THE SAG ISN'T ON STRIKE! Bad call. WGA is guilting SAG into dropping out of these events and basically the WGA is using the SAG to fight its war.

    LAME.

    28

Perez, its not an attack on the musicians or the Grammy's, its an attack on its parent company CBS. CBS, along with the rest of the AMPTP, refuses to come to the negotiating table. With the exception of Worldwide Pants… no production company with CBS or CBS itself have shown any good faith measures towards an agreement. Why should the writer's show any good faith measures either? These are BIG conglomerates and you have to talk with them in the only medium they seem to understand… the bottom line.

the writers need to send a message that someone up there has to hear, and if this is the way to do it, good. its a david and goliath story, except "goliath" are a bunch of overfed ceo's who make shitty movies, and writers are "davids" who have to work for peanuts to make those shitty movies. and you know what, the golden globes were so much more enjoyable this year. they should keep it like that. no commercials, no boring ass accpetance speeches, just a half hour to get it done and move on!

    44

Actually, yes, it does affect the Grammys. As long as they have scripted material, which they do in their show, and that banter, then it is the same as any other television show. The fact that it is an awards show for music has nothing to do with it. They still depend on writers for this show. I say go WGA. The grammys could always strike a deal with the WGA or at least try to. Or they could do it like the other awards shows are having to do it. They don't deserve special treatment.

  51. Laury says – reply to this

    51

Whatever. There's too many boring award shows out there anyway. I mean, as long as they get their stupid trophy, why do they need a show for it? There are a lot more important issues out there than the Golden Globes and the Grammys not getting aired.

    59

WGA is not using SAG as pawns. It is Union supporting Union. SAG's contract is up in June. If they cannot reach their own agreement, WGA will fully support them in the same way.

  60. Tracy says – reply to this

    60

NO. THIS WILL NOT FUCKING HAPPEN. My favorite band (Montgomery Gentry) is up for their first Grammy nomination, so this is NOT the year for fucking with the Grammys! Plus, Tim McGraw's up for some too, so they'd better go on EXACTLY as planned!!! I support the writers, but this is ridiculous. Like you said, Perez, the music industry has ABSOFUCKINGLUTELY NOTHING to do with DVD/TV writers. UGH!!!

  61. sickinfant says – reply to this

    61

The WGA has really pulled a fast one on the American people. The writers have tricked the public into thinking that what they do is unique and special– its not– especially when you consider the level of writing needed for these award shows. A brain damaged six year old could achieve the level of writing demonstrated at the award shows. What the fuck is stopping the powers that be from telling the writers to get fucked and hiring a bunch of college creative writing students to come up with new concepts? I guarantee they couldn't do any worse than the fecal matter the writers have been shoving down our throats for years.

  62. Lamb Chop says – reply to this

    62

Sorry P, but I have to give kudos to the writers for sticking together on this one. Maybe if they can stay unified, then people will take them seriously.

  63. Kelowna-ite says – reply to this

    63

There may not be an actual NEED to picket the Grammy's but you first need to understand how Unions operate then you will understand why they (the union members) feel the NEED to picket the Grammy's. Perhaps it doesnt make sense to you, but if you were a unionized worker, it certainly would and you would be loud and proud and out there wearing a placard yourself walking the line….

  64. KJ says – reply to this

    64

Just like superficial people dump the union so you can get your "Glam" on. People are hurting financially and are fighting for their right to a fair wage. Now because of a shitty awards show you want to dump the strike and strikers? How shallow when people are losing shit. Everyone dosn't make 1 million dollars. It's the little people that get hurt in a strike. I don't watch the late night Scab shows and I hope the strike is settled. But if not I'll continue to watch HG channel and weather.

  65. Lisa says – reply to this

    65

Good I think they SHOULD picket the Grammys. It shows they are serious. They can't back down or the whole strike wouldbe pointless. If I lived in Hollywood I would be out there pickiting with them!

  66. can't spell says – reply to this

    66

    GO REALITY TV!! WOO-HOO!

  67. PooPooPants says – reply to this

    67

Listen, the writer's strike is bullshit by now. They need fresh writer's in there and go by the saying "out with the old, in with the new" maybe, just MAYBE if the fucking writer's EVER came up with ANYTHING new, we'd be backing them, but they are old, stale and unable to keep up with modern day times. I say can em all and start from scratch, they aren't worth a shit and obviously are out for blood. How fucking hard is it to write for Desperate Housewives? It's the same shit over and over and over again, who gives a FUCKING FUCK!! I'd make those lazy, pot smoking writer's come up with some new shit that actually has some meat to the bones or give them their walking papers, bring in new talent, new writers, new comedy, and get rid of these whiny fuckin baby writer's who get paid for rewriting the same old shows!

  68. Ashley says – reply to this

    68

OMG!!!! the possiblity of no grammys saddens me. I swear..ever since i can remember ive watched the award shows. Missin the golden globes was bad enough…now we're worryin about the oscars next month because of this damn strike. I say give them their damn money…they deserve it..they wrote the damn stuff!!!! Im huge on fashion…i love everything about it (minus fur&skins) I need these award shows to see whats hot..and i mean come on designers and caterers have spent all year tryin to arrange this…its wrong!

  69. Taylor says – reply to this

    69

Okay, sorry, but this is getting out of hand. I don't care for any award shows, even the Grammys, but I think the writers are going to end up with their foot in their mouth. First of all, as the last episode of shows are aired many will start to forget about their 'fave show' b/c it won't be coming back anytime soon. Then when they DO come back, people will have found better things to do and ratings will suffer. Secondly, what's to stop these media conglomerates from hiring elsewhere? How about a writer just out of college or someone who has been trying to make it for years? Don't even tell me their writing wouldn't be good enough because look at the crap we keep getting. And don't even get me started on these winter shows they're starting to release! BLAHHHHHHHHHH!

  70. HELLO COLLEGE WRITERS??? says – reply to this

    70

Re: sickinfant – Damn straight! Agree 100%

  71. Katana says – reply to this

    71

I miss seeing the celebrities in their costumes, interviews, etc. - it's the only time, aside from their filmwork, where we can catch of glimpse of what they're really like… in a way, ya know? But yeah - we need new, fresh writers. How difficult can it be? Could we get some University/College English majors to write? I think so!

  72. Nightmaredoll says – reply to this

    72

This is the most stupid thing I have heard in a long time. How dare the WGA! This is a case of ego getting in everyone's way.

  75. ace says – reply to this

  76. Shauna says – reply to this

    76

How bloody hard is it to right intros, speeches and/or the winner is? Come on people…The Grammys have no place in this writers strike, so don't be a-holes just because you can be. I work in the music biz…I WANT to see the Grammys and if WGA pickets the Grammys then I'll fly to L.A. and picket the WGA.

  77. Franklin says – reply to this

    77

GOOD! I say burn it ALL DOWN — fuck the entertainment industry… the elitist cancer of American society.

  78. VV says – reply to this

    78

NOOOOOO . . . . NOT THE GRAMMYS. WHY DOES ANYONE NEED TO WRITE FOR THE GRAMMYS. CAN'T THEY JUST HAVE AN AWARD SHOW WITH A BUNCH OF PERFORMANCES AND AWARDS? WHO NEEDS TO WRITE FOR THAT? STUPID!!!!! I'M ALL FOR THE WRITERS, BUT THIS IS AN EXTREME AND JUST STUPID!

  79. Shauna says – reply to this

    79

Sorry I should have said "write" instead of "right", shit maybe I need a WGA member to write my comments.

  80. Alicia Pimplestoned says – reply to this

I for one am glad the awards shows are being cancelled. They're all painfully boring and consist of self congratulatory celebrities in overpriced gowns. What the fuck are we missing? NOTHING.

  82. Kit-Kat says – reply to this

    82

    THOSE BITCHES!!!
    This makes me soo angry!
People need to get this shit solved pronto, or else I'm gonna be stuck watching reality TV and re-runs for months!

  83. Franklin is a genius! says – reply to this

    83

Re: Franklin – Well said, kudos to you.

  84. Ruth says – reply to this

    84

Perez- you should not say you support the writers BUT… anything. you support or you don't. That's the point of a union. It has to be all or nothing to work.

To everyone else- the writers ARE trying to end the strike by getting the conglomerates to come back to negotiations. That's how the strike ends, by negotiating. If picketing the Grammy's (or Golden Globes or Oscars) gets the producers back to the table, then they should picket. Don't blame the writers just because the word "writers" is the name of the strike. It's the AMPTP that's letting it drag out.

Also, SAG is not "being used" by the WGA, they are supporting the WGA because they will be asking for the exact same things when their contract is up in June.

  85. nightpipe says – reply to this

    85

Drama is aleady started! Big media needs give up and give in…..com'on now fair is fair! FUCK THE GRAMMYS……theres no more record companies…..YEAH!!! KEEP THAT SHIT INDEPENDANT, KEEP THAT ALMIGHTY DOLLAR IN YA OWN POCKET!

  86. dee says – reply to this

    86

A strike is for the purpose of putting pressure on "management" to come to the table and bargain in earnest. You can't be for a strike only when its convenient, mario. That's the same fair weather friend you seem to be politically, also. If it messes with what you like, then you squeal. And why is it the WGA "doing it" to the Grammys…why not the big wigs who are standing firm and refusing to do any meaningful negotiations? they are in a better position to hold out, that's why…they can afford it$$$…your such an ass…you really are a silly prick, you know…uucckk!

  87. Bob says – reply to this

    87

They should be picketing. Good for them.

Can't have a show without writers. Fuck the scabs who have or may have written for the Grammys.

  88. GW2 says – reply to this

    88

who cares. awards shows are absolute cock television. i'm glad my tv isn't bored because of them.

  89. all knowing says – reply to this

    89

the writer's strike does affect the music industry. if there are no new tv shows then you can't have music in tv shows….which makes a lot of money for some artist and companies.

  90. pj says – reply to this

    90

Grammys aren't the music business - they're the TV business, about music. It's a high rated function of the people they are striking against, so it would be stupid of the WGA not to picket it. The other unions will follow their lead, because they're going to have to renegotiate sometime, too.

Viewing programs on the internet is the only area where the networks are seeing growth - and the growth there is huge. Currently, writers aren't seeing a dime from any of that, while the major studios are all reporting huge profits from digital sales. Writers get a cut when their shows are broadcast on television… why shouldn't they get a cut when their shows are distributed by other means?

Plus, the percentage they are asking for is miniscule. However, the executives do not want to share even the smallest bit of the profits - from a product that they have literally nothing to do with the production of.

  91. tammy says – reply to this

    91

All of these mainstream singers who were in movies and TV shows acting as other than themselves are either part of the SAG or have actor attached beside the word singer. If they were nominated for their acting for whatever reason, you better believe that their asses would be right there, on the red carpet accepting their trophies as good actores if they won. They are just as part of this whole thing as the regular actors and actresses. They should show some solidarity. Just because you sing too doesn't give you a pass.

    I say cancel that shit.

  92. Cancel Them All says – reply to this

    92

You could go and cancel all of the award shows for all I care…..

All it is is a bunch of celebrities struttung their stuff in their free designer clothes boosting their own egos (as if they need that anymore than they already are). No big loss to me. Cancel the Academy Awards while you're at it.

  93. justjak says – reply to this

    93

JEEZ !!! The Grammys are far and away the MOST boring of the awards shows…and that's saying a lot since they're ALL boring as shit. And award shows make a huge bundle of cash for the evil networks that broadcast them…SO strike away you deserving writers, destroying the award's season is the best result of your strike so far.

  94. Eddie Chedder says – reply to this

    94

FUCK the Grammy's. What about health care and other decent benefits for the truly talented people behind the scenes. Besides, the Grammy's will probably continue to praise and reward untalented hacks. CANCEL THE GRAMMY'S!

  95. Keira says – reply to this

    95

    I HATE THE WGA!!

They fucked it up for Atonement - the best film of the year. I wanted to see James McAvoy and Keira Knightly pick up the award for best drama motion picture.

AND I WANT MY GREY'S ANATOMY/DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES/SUPERNATURAL (and One Tree Hill once thats finished) BACK!

  96. okik says – reply to this

    96

booohoo the singers dont care. They are gonna show up especially kanye west we dont wanna hear hm wine and cry about how the writers cancelled the Grammys please I am sick oh him bitching so writers do us a favor and dont cancel it. Oh and if writers stand infront of the Grammys stricking 50 cent is gonna teach them a lesson hopefully their last and shoot them dead, that will be a lesson to everyone that greed is bad and always be grateful.

  97. jessica says – reply to this

    97

OMG Parez are you serious? For someone who claims to know about show business you should know that the grammys are WRITTEN. The show is SCRIPTED! These things don't happen without writeres. No writers, no show! It's just as it should be.

  98. cynthia says – reply to this

    98

Ok, Perez, I love the Grammy's — but the writers are not getting through to the Studios and they must do what they must. I am not a writer, I am not even in the business, but I know a lot of people who are and this is just destroying hollywood!!

  99. KML says – reply to this

Re: Keira – Honey…without the DAMN WRITERS there would be NO Atonement, Grey's Anatomy or Desperate Housewives. Instead of complaining about the writers you should support them…as you OBVIOUSLY LOVE their work…and make sure the networks and studio producers know how you feel. Public support of the writers will end the strike…not whining about not getting to see some quasi British Stars.
