Oprah is getting her own cable network!
Called OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network, the new channel will premiere next year.
In a statement, Momma O said the network "is the evolution of the work I've been doing on television all these years and a natural extension of my show."
The Oprah Winfrey Network will be part of the Discover network, taking over the Discovery Health Channel, started in 1999, which reaches 67.7 million cable and satellite homes, according to Nielsen.
What programming can we look forward to?
Oprah isn't saying just yet.
The mandate of the network, said David Zaslav, president and CEO of Discovery Communications, is "to entertain, inform and inspire people to live their best lives."
Discovery said Winfrey will have "full editorial control" over the joint venture, with responsibility for "programming, branding and creative vision."
Oprah will be the chairman of OWN.
Discovery and Winfrey will each own 50% of the network, and OWN will be an independent company.
And Oprah gets even richer!

I sit on the fence about the power this one woman wields. I'm a littlel tired of her at this point and wish she would take a more behind the scenes approach to her good works. (sort of like the way if feel about Celine Dion…like her voice…can't watch her perform anymore…spiols it for me). I think she came to power at just the "right" time during the women's movement, and the fact that she was black, female, and overweight just hit the jackpot with some of her fans….timing is everything. I've never thought she was a good interviewer…early on she'd interupt with her own story all the time…"revealing" personal stuff that drew us in. But as a journalist,,,feh…not so much.But the biggest mistake I see here, now (and I wonder if anyone's with me on this) is the naming of this network…OWN???? If her accountant tells her, "Hey Oprah, you're making way too much money this year, you need a few more tax write-offs." She calls her financial team and asks them to dig up whatever causes she's been petitioned to endorse and tells them to pick one. She gives nothing. Give the credit to the people deserving of it: the donors.
