American Idol returned to TV on Tuesday with its worst premiere in four years.
Last night's ratings were down 13% from last year and down 10% from 2006.
Idol's not dead dead. It was still the most watched show on television Tuesday night. However, the decline in viewership does not bode well for the aging show.

Its all a planned marketing scheme.
I know people who actually auditioned for AI 2 years ago who would of been perfect, but they weren't picked. I guess because their life is too boring.

the only one who really made it was kelly oh and as far as country goes(which I don't listen to cause it sucks) Kerry Underwood. Everyone else is getting dropped. McPepee, Studard, Hicks, Guarinni gayken is hanging on though I don't know who listens to his shit and that tranny fantasia is not gonna be around for long either…just saying (bring on the hate comments but i'm right)

i notice you left out the part about how it was #1 in ratings, by far, of all the networks. mostly the problem seems to be that people are watching less tv across the board, and certainly less networks, than ever before. not that idol died.

i only watch idol for the auditions, they are hilarious! there shouldnt be any more of the show after the auditions, who really cares? and no there is very little talent that comes from that show its all a popularity contest.

I LOVE American Idol. I don't necessarily like the auditions ones as much though. Lame people looking for attention. I do homework and watch tv during them, whereas during the top 12/24 it will have my full attention!
I watched….The guy who sang to Paula about "If she was a bathtub I would CAULK her" was funny. I think they focus too much of the sappy back stories of contestants thoughd — just show us the shitty singers! That's why we watch the early episodes!
The audition process is B-O-R-I-N-G….who cares about the freaks of the world bastardizing an artform just so that they can be on tv? They need to nix the whole audition process footage and start with the singing competition…all that other crap does is encourage other freaks to show up next year…

I watched idol and thought it was way better than last years auditions.
I think viewers now know what to expect from the audition episodes and that part of Idol has gotten old and boring. People can only sit and watch horrible "singers" make fools of themselves for so long. The show gives far too much attention to the negative and the making fun of and embarrassing people. When Idol gets to the real competition part I'll watch…until then, it's not on in my house.

While I am not an IDOL Fan, this post is really funny. Check out VARIETY…It had over 30 million viewers (not counting DVRs) and was the #1 entertainment program this season - BY FAR — Most 'hit' shows this year are lucky to get 10-15 million….IDOL last night doubled the combined ratings of the shows on ALL the other networks…and IDOL traditionally grows in the national ratings and over the weeks. It may be a bit stale which is why producers are trying to reinvigorate it, but it is far from dead- esp when theres nothing else on TV> PErsonally I hate these initial rounds so I went to the movies last night. Real life is more fun than living vicariously through other people any day

Thank God!!!! That show has lost so much credibility over the years, I mean, when the best part of the show is the auditions, you know you're in trouble. Besides, most of the winners and runners-up, with the exception of Carrie Underwood, are already has-beens, maybe Fox should take the hint once and for all.

I watched last night and thought it was as good as it has been in the previous years. I think it will be the MOST watched show on Tuesday and Wednesday nights this spring because there is nothing else to watch due to of the WGA strike. However, I would watch regardless because I'm a huge fan of the show.

Well, its a TV show so who really cares. Even more predictable than the inevitable decline in viewership- is how Puss Perez is always first in line to announce that anything - tv, cd, movie etc that doesnt break sales records is "dead" or "over." Yawn. Either do some real reporting or get a new gimmick queen.
