i see my friends smoking away their lives on a daily basis..and it pains me, they will most likely all end up developing some sort of respiratory failures, and that is really sad to think about.

    Perez,

Thanks for writting for kids not to smoke. Even though Susan did smoke and died from lung cancer; could I also ask some readers to get radon test for their basements. Radon gases are aften found in basements and while you are exposed to this gas you can develope lung cancer.

This is the second cause of lung cancer and not a ton of people know this. It's a $15 dollar test from Home Depot. Now, this doesn't mean that you are stuck with a faulty house. There are companies that will repair this and then you will never be exposed to this gas again.

    I love you perez

You could not smoke a day your entire life and still end up with lung cancer. My boss was diagnosed last week with lung cancer, she was 36 and never smoked nor was she around smokers. Then my grandfather was a chain smoker and would go through four packs a day and never came down with lung cancer and he lived to be 88. I just don't understand.

  47. Grace says – reply to this

    47

Yeah, lung cancer happens to non-smokers too, but the vast majority of cases are smokers. Besides, cancer isn't the only shitty thing that can happen to smokers. For instance, how about emphysema? Yeah, it's really SEXY when someone has to drag an oxygen tank around with them for the rest of their lives.

Stop fooling yourselves, people. You're smoking yourselves into an early grave…or worse.

  48. drewskie says – reply to this

  49. I haven't smoked.. says – reply to this

    49

Thanks for the nice tribute to Suzanne. I used to watch the Bob Newhart Show when I was a child. Smoking is a horrible horrible habit! My grandma has emphazema, and it really slows down your life. She can't walk up a staircase without weezing. :(

I have never smoked in my life, and do not intend to!

  50. Grace says – reply to this

    50

And WTF is the deal with this "…she was 70 and was going to die in the next 8 years anyway". HOW THE HELL DO YOU KNOW THAT??? Do you have some kind of God complex? I can guarantee you this much: When YOU'RE 70, you're NOT going to be ready to go yet, unless you're totally suffering from some shitty terminal illness…LIKE LUNG CANCER!!!

Every since I was a child, I always enjoyed her brilliant, sarcastic sense of humor on the "Bob Newhart Show" . She definitely paved the way for tv icons like Roseanne, Patricia Heaton, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and others. R.I.P. You will be missed!

  65. Xillip says – reply to this

    65

I will miss her. One classy broad. I believe that she would like that. As for the smoking we all have our vices (food, drink, drugs, GOSSIP). Noone lives forever. Dana Reeve died from lung cancer and she never smoked a day in her life. Suzanne led a full and happy life and found love again in her later years with Tom Poston. I hope that I am as lucky and well loved as she. I do not want to be 101 and living in a nursing home. I want quality of life.

  66. jackie paper says – reply to this

IT IS NOT ALWAYS CAUSED BY SMOKING!!!
I KNEW SOMEONE WHO NEVER SMOKED ONCE IN HER LIFE, NEVER LIVED OR HUNG AROUND ANYONE WHO SMOKED EITHER, AND SHE STILL DIED. AND YES MY GREAT GRANDFATHER WAS A CHAINSMOKING, TOBACCO-CHEWING DRUNKARD AND HE IS STILL 102, PERFECTLY FINE, NO HEALTH PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER. LIFE IS FUCKED UP!!!

  69. Right! says – reply to this

    69

Re: WRINKLES WRIKLES WRINKLES – What a load of bullshit! ALL people age differently regardless of race, color or skin tone. I have worked with a beautiful light skinned black woman for 30 years. I will admit for the the first 20 she looked damn good, but the last few years WOW! her face looks like a piece of plastic that someone used a blowtorch on! Saggy, baggy, wrinkled and lined. If your face is full (read fat) yes you can get a few more good years out but if your face is lean, look out you'll need a bellman to deal with all those bags!

I had the pleasure of running into her at a restaurant in LA about 10 years ago. She was very gracious, friendly, and stunningly beautiful, even with minimal makeup on. And her eyes were beyond gorgeous in person…

Now I see other family members who I love puffing away and wonder who's going to get a big heart attack or cancer next…..btw - telling them to quit is USELESS and all I've ever gotten is a "mind your own business" look. So now I say nothing as it won't do any good anyway.

    78

Suzanne Pleshette was a class act. A great comedian, and also a fine dramatic actress. She will be missed. She didn't beat the smoking odds, and very few will. If you don't smoke, please don't start. If you do smoke, do what you can to quit. Rest in peace, Suzanne - you will be missed.

Although lung cancer is the primary result from smoking, one can still be afflicted by it from other cancers from the thoracic (chest area) and breast - you dumb cumbucket Perez.

  80. McKenna says – reply to this

    80

Not always cancer. My dad smoked from 20 to 45 but the emphysema didn't get him until he was older. He spent his last two years hooked up to an electric oxygen machine in his apartment and wherever he went he pulled along a long hose that was attached to the machine. It was sad and uncomfortable for him. In the end he suffocated from lack of oxygen even with the machine. Don't smoke.

  84. DrLynn says – reply to this

    84

there is more than one type of lung cancer. Some cancers are caused by smoking, some from a renegade cell that was there from birth (embryonal) and some from chemical exposures or particle exposure from things like talc or asbestos(like mesothelioma). All are lung cancers, all with different causes. Some lung cancer is metastatic- that is, it came from cancer somewhere else in the body. Some smokers don't get lung cancer- but that is a pretty big risk factor.

  85. FooFoo says – reply to this

    85

    Perez, you're such an idiot.

You don't automatically attribute respiratory failure to lung cancer. Do you know what prescriptions she may have taken in the past? Or if the Bob Newhard building had asbestos in the roof? Or if the city she lived in had air pollution issues (not that all of them don't)?

Educate yourself on the real facts of tobacco use before posting some mindless propaganda. Smoking is less bad for you than DRINKING alcohol. Which I'm sure you do a lot of.

RIP Suazanne… you were sure one heck of a pretty lady, and I LOVED your voice!
I lost my dear Dad to lung disease in 1994 (I was 24 years old when he died).. I adored my Dad and miss him terribly. He smoked for years and years and years, and it finally caught up with him when he was only 57. Sad thing was is that I smoked for a few years, and the day we had his funeral I was standing outside the Funeral Home lighting up a cigarette, how awful is that??!! I thought I could never quit. But one day a few years later I just decided that I had finally had enough, and quit cold turkey…one of the best decisions I've ever made. If I can do it, YOU can do it.
Again, Suzanne RIP, you will be missed very much by so many.

she was a regular at the restaurant I work at. Her lawyer called us to tell us the news before any of the networks or media knew about it. her husband passed away from cancer last year, and not only was suzanne's birthday coming up, she was just about to get her star on the Walk of Fame and she was determined to be there. This is real sad, i know most of you- particularly the teenagers and 20somethings- don't give a crap or even heard of her, but she was a really nice and well-liked person and a terrific actress. It's really hurtful how she's not even in the ground yet and people are making fun of her appearance. sad week in hollywood- brad renfro, sam the butcher from Brady Bunch, and now Suzanne.
