Pneumonia has been ruled out as the cause of death of Heath Ledger.
Police discovered what they believe to be illegal drugs at his apartment.
The actor's daughter, Matilda, is on her way back to New York with mom Michelle Williams, who had been filming in Sweden and is said to be "in her own world" right now.
Ledger's ex-girlfriend, Naomi Watts, has cancelled all her media appearances. The Australian actress was at Sundance to promote a new film.
Production on Heath's most recent film, the Terri Gilliam-directed The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, has been shut down.
Warner Bros., who are releasing the next Batman movie with Ledger as the Joker, says, "The studio is stunned and devastated by this tragic news. The entertainment community has lost an enormous talent. Heath was a brilliant actor and an exceptional person. Our hearts go out to his family and friends."
And, model Helena Christensen has revealed to Women's Wear Daily: "I was on my way over to pay him a visit when I found out," she says. "I had just left him a message and heard his voice on the machine. He was such a special and genuine person, so extraordinarily talented because he was so raw and honest with his feelings. He was so full of life, so electric."

this is all so devastating. i'm really upset by this one. a beautiful man and a tortured soul. Where were all of these people when Heath really needed them? All of these so-called friends who are all so devastated from this loss. Did you not see the warning signs? I still can't believe it, I always thought he was so normal and level headed. I guess that goes to show anyone can be caught up in depression/drugs and die at any moment. It's such a tragedy, he was an inspiration to many and he will be missed by his great number of fans. What a terrible loss.
