John Gibson is not sorry!

The shameful Fox News host made a mockery of Heath Ledger's death and reveled in homophobia on his radio show Tuesday night.

The uproar was almost instantaneous and Gibson had NO remorse or apology on his show Wednesday. In fact, he defended his actions!

According to Think Progress:

On his radio show yesterday, Fox News host John Gibson responded to ThinkProgress’ criticism of his comments mocking the death of Heath Ledger, saying that it was just “a little Brokeback Mountain joke” and there is “no point in passing up a good joke.”

Without offering any sort of apology, Gibson defended his callous comments by claiming that “for months and months and months,” his show has consistently made fun of the line, “I wish I knew how to quit you” from Brokeback Mountain. “I’m not giving that up,” exclaimed Gibson:

GIBSON: How many months did we live off that line, Brokeback Mountain?

BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN CLIP: I wish I knew how to quit you.

ANGRY RICH: Several.

GIBSON: I mean, it was going on for months and months and months.

BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN CLIP: Wooee, yeah!

GIBSON: I’m not giving that up.

On MSNBC’s Morning Joe this morning, host Joe Scarborough described the homophobic undertones of Gibson’s “little Brokeback Mountain joke,” calling it “mean-spirited and hateful” that “if you make a movie about being gay, your death becomes a punchline.”

When Gibson’s sidekick, Angry Rich, read him a negative comment left by a ThinkProgress reader (which the site does not endorse) calling the Fox News host “a closet homosexual,” Gibson responded by laughing and quipping “well, I’m still breathing”:

ANGRY RICH: You’re “a closet homosexual.” That’s the first one.

GIBSON: Oh, I am?

ANGRY RICH: Apparently.

GIBSON: Ha ha ha, well I’m still breathing. There’s the difference right there.

To all the executives at FOX News,

Mr. Gibson's comments were no less worse than those made by Imus. His apology sounded forced and contrived - definitely insincere.

He deserves more consequences than to simply speak what many will consider a non-apology. He takes very little responsibility for his actions, and he sounds cold and business-like.

*Know this: right now, FOX's reputation has been tainted at the hands of Mr. Gibson.

This is not something to make light of. Those who watch FOX are the same people that are sad that Heath Ledger has passed. His words were shocking and offensive.

I hope his family and friends somehow missed this display of ignorance, because it is not needed.

I expect this behavior from other gossip-laden forms of media - but not FOX.

Indeed it pains me to have to respond to comments made in such a vile, callous and unrepenting way surrounding the untimely death of Heath Ledger. As a father of 4 sons, I am disgusted with the remarks made by John Gibson. For the record I consider myself a libertarian and spiritualist.

Mr. Gibson's remarks can be best described as irresponsible, homophobic and his apology as lame. His apology went out to those he offended not for what he said. While I have a deep respect for free speech he has crossed the line and must be held accountable for the viewpoint he holds. As a journalist or a commentator he is and should be held to a higher standard by his employers. I would hope that his employer takes whatever action is fair and appropriate. I will yield to their judgment since broadcasting is not my discipline.

While I am not affiliated with any organized religion, though I was brought up a Catholic; I believe we were all conceived in our Creators image and loved by HIM/HER regardless of our sexual orientation. I have brought up my 4 sons with that message of love; rather than the bigoted and dangerous philosophy held by Mr. Gibson and those who may support him.

Hopefully this most unfortunate situation will change the way we treat each other. Love is a powerful emotion that will always triumph over hate. Let's not waste an opportunity to learn from the untimely death of Heath Ledger. It would be a wonderful way to honor him. Peace.

I have never seen the show, living in the UK, but I'm appalled that someone who is supposed to be a professional journalist, could contemplate speaking ill of the dead.
