psychiatrists are todays shamans practicing a pseudo-science which hasn't identified the hypothesized biological origins of most of the "diseases" they treat, specially manic-depression, schizophrenia, depression and obsessive compulsive disorder. One few notable exceptions being epilepsy.
Just some basic rational guidelines to follow when dealing with this scum:
* If someone says you have a chemical imbalance (which do exists and do have consequences) ask them if they actually measured it and ask them also to quantify it. If they haven't measured it leave at once, this cannot be an intellectually honest person
* When given drugs ask them to show you how the dosage was calculated and for studies describing the efficiency vs a placebo.
Most of the times psychiatrists are just interested in hooking you. They are dealers with a legal status.

Not nearly as much, lots of hormone levels are really measured when trying to find the problem. None are measured in a psychiatric evaluation except in investigation settings (as you wrote).

Right, lots of them, together with lots that showed higher incidence of suicide ideation and lots of studies also say that it's as effective as such simple "therapies" as exercise. The confidence levels of these "studies" are absolutely laughable by hard science standards.

I never wrote that neurotransmitters don't exist nor that their imbalances don't exist either. Read my comment.
What I wrote was that:
Psychiatrists say that all mental ilness (as it is understood today, since the diagnostic is so subjective) have a biological origin (which they might have in many cases) but produce no actual concrete models or predictions that can actually be falsified. This is an intrinsic problem and turns the field into non-science.
Then the practice problem when diagnostics are made on a whim with no objective data to back them up and powerful drugs are issued based on this.
Now if people want to use drugs I'm all for it as long as they don't bother me, but the funny thing is that those same highly subjective critieria are used to (sometimes) force those drugs on people that do not want to take them and that's just wrong unless they have actually committed a crime.

As for my background, I do real science. You know objective things where you actually use math and quantitative models to make predictions and then test them against reality in a controled environment.

Oh really, diagnostic is so subjective that different psychiatrists can diagnose one same illness in one person, it's also so subjective there's a thing called the DSM-IV-R. No one can force you into taking a drug and if they do well, that's fucked up. I see from your writings you must work with psychology?
