During his all too short life, Heath Ledger battled addictions to alcohol and drugs, including cocaine, heroin and "a variety of pills," the new issue of Us Weekly is reporting.

Heath's demons were so powerful and harmful to his relationship with Michelle Williams that she tried to get him to enter rehab, says the mag.

In March 2006 – just weeks after the couple walked the Oscars red carpet and when daughter Matilda was only five months old – Williams drove Ledger to Promises Treatment Center in Malibu, California, the confidant tells Us Weekly.

Ledger refused to check in, instead swaying her with a pledge to clean up.

One of the issues that haunted Heath in his final days: two sources tell Us that Williams demanded Ledger be drug-tested before his visitations with Matilda.

Man, heroin is the bad stuff. Once you go there, there's no turning back!

I know some people can fall into the traps of drugs but it doesn't make you a bad person and it just seems like everyone is trying to make him out to be a bad person. He may very well have had addiction issues, but it seems a bit unlikely that he would have been capable of the prodigious output of his last months alive, acting at a level that astounded directors, if he was drugged out. You can't reach emotional truth through THAT haze.

I've seen numerous photos of him alone with his daughter and reports that she stayed with him when the mother was working or out of town. People close to him say he has been clean for well over a year. There were no illegal drugs found in his apartment and no indications that he had used any. Certainly they would see needle tracks during the preliminary examination if he was shooting. I say bull to this story. Probably based on old stories and information.

I think he partied hard and got to a place where everything got out of hand due to the excessiveness of his lifestyle. I could see from his interviews recently that he couldn't keep still, seemed to be jumping out of his own skin. Heck, just by the prescription drugs he had everyone knows he had some issues going. He stated he couldn't sleep, and looked rough lately. I am sure his lifestyle had an impact on the breakup of Michelle and him. He was living on fast-forward.

Re: cambel – Absolutely! If only it worked that way - maybe this man's life could have been saved. The more I read about Owen Wilson, for example - this man has been ILL and SUFFERING for YEARS with depression, alcoholism and drug abuse. He's even dropped quite a few hints about feeling sad and depressed in interviews, but it's all about protecting the "image" - the same image that the media can't wait to tear down when the drugs finally DO consume them. I don't care about their money and their big houses. More power to them. What is upsetting is the ignored idea that these "celebs" are first and foremost human beings and that this culture of keeping things HIDDEN is LITERALLY killing the more vulnerable of them (whatever the reasons for their vulnerability might be). (BTW - That's one of the reasons I like Perez - he shows things as they are!)

This is ridiculous. Everyone has their own demons…EVERYONE. And to try and smudge a persons name after they've died is the ultimate filth. A very real person is now dead and a very real loving family and friends are left behind to cope with their loss. Heath is gone, I am going to choose to remember him for the wonderful talent that he had and I really hope that people will have class and do the same.

Looks like all the mags are trying to cash-in on all the drug rumors before the tox report comes back. Heath and his close friends seem pretty tight-lipped … I have a hard time believing they found someone close to Heath or Michelle that would talk to a magazine about their personal affairs. Their 'sources' are probably as fake as that guy who called into Fox news claiming to be Heath's dad.

First of all, I was sorta fond of the idea that you weren't going to stoop to the low levels of most gossip media about Heath Ledger's death. "Reporting" on what a dirtrag like US Weekly is "reporting" is pathetic. You know it's a crock of shit.

Second, while heroin is bad, very bad, there is recovery from the disease of addiction. The old lie of "once an addict, always an addict" is dead. We do recover. I've been there. I've been free from the bondage of addiction for over two years from both heroin and crack cocaine. Please don't perpetuate the old lie by saying there's no turning back.

Sorry, but I DO know for a fact that he was struggling with alcohol and other substances. And yes, that is why Michelle ended their relationship. Just because you don't WANT to believe it does not make it so. It's NOT dishonorable to anyone to know the truth!!! Maybe his truth will inspire someone who needs HELP to get it! Heath was a nice guy, but he did have his issues as we all do (mine just so happens not to be drugs). For the record: Their are MANY ppl who struggle with alcohol and drugs and they do it PRIVATELY.
