They Kept It Hidden Well

During his all too short life, Heath Ledger battled addictions to alcohol and drugs, including cocaine, heroin and "a variety of pills," the new issue of Us Weekly is reporting.

Heath's demons were so powerful and harmful to his relationship with Michelle Williams that she tried to get him to enter rehab, says the mag.

In March 2006 – just weeks after the couple walked the Oscars red carpet and when daughter Matilda was only five months old – Williams drove Ledger to Promises Treatment Center in Malibu, California, the confidant tells Us Weekly.

Ledger refused to check in, instead swaying her with a pledge to clean up.

One of the issues that haunted Heath in his final days: two sources tell Us that Williams demanded Ledger be drug-tested before his visitations with Matilda.

Man, heroin is the bad stuff. Once you go there, there's no turning back!

I wish the mags would just let Heath rest in peace. I think if he would have had a drug problem he would have been in the mags like Lindsey or Britney but he wasn't. The only thing that concerns me was on the People website the last time he talked to that one guy heath said he missed his girl and mentioned he didn't see her over the holidays…thats sad. I can him being alittle depressed about not seeing his baby girl. He wass a great actor that really through himself into his roles, and was amazing to watch on the screen. RIP!!

This is embarrassing Perez. I thought you were going to show a little more respect for him than to run this trashiness. I luvs my gossip mags & sites, but i refuse to buy this magazine & i'm almost ashamed to have read this on your site. We don't know yet, stop speculating. He was a Wonderful actor, seemed to be a very caring father, and I'm sure a wonderful soul. Leave him be, let him rest in peace!!

There have been some fairly convincing accounts in the UK press that he had a coke problem a few years back. And at least one groupie has come forward with a convincing account of him doing coke in London in January. Not sure how much he was doing recently but I assume he maybe had a relapse last year and Michelle threw him out. He certainly seemed to be in a strange place in that interview last November. Probably wouldn't have drugs at home if he had Matilda staying regularly. I am thinking the NYPD doesn't want to investigate as it might open a whole can of worms involving other celebs. When they have any doubt about cause of death, the NY police usually announce it was a cardiac arrest. There are too many unexplained deaths going round at present - what really killed Daniel Smith (Anna Nicole's son) for example or Ryan Shay in the NY Marathon? We do need to know about causes to avoid it happening again. Meanwhile it just shows how badly being a celebrity can damage your health.

Thank the Lord there are some normal people on her like Harlin and Pepperpot. How can anyone not see, even in hindsight, that Heath had a drug problem? Forget about the numerous first hand stories, just take one look at recent pictures and some interviews. My friend, who was not overly familiar with Heath, thought he was in his late 40s! I feel terrible that Heath died, but it's time the media stops sweeping this shit under the rug. The industry also needs to start taking responsibilty. However, as someone else already said, I expect a cover up.

This makes me sick. One day, when his little girl is old enough, she's going to look back on how her father's death was publicized and she's going to see all of this bullshit. Regardless as to how the man died, he's dead. He was human. He has a family and people who loved him who are mourning right now. Why can't they just be left alone right now?

Here are the facts. He's been clean for more than a year. He complained even in the press about insomnia and not being able to sleep. He was being treated by a physician for anxiety and depression and he was given PRESCRIPTION drugs for all of these. He was suffering from pneumonia, flu and/or exhaustion, in London while he was shooting a movie. He had prescription antibiotics. He was supposed to go to Vancouver, but took a few days to go to NYC first, bcz he needed to rest. He was SICK. He flies home on Sunday after working all night in the cold and rain in London on Saturday. He feels like shit. He is dehydrated from being sick and from flying. He talks on the phone to people on Monday. He sets up meetings. He goes to the grocery. He crashes. He dies. This is a guy who was planning to direct his first movie. This is a guy who spent lots of quality time with his daughter. This was a guy who was tortured by health issues and emotional problems. He died. I will miss him. He was a good person. So many people who knew him loved him. No one who met him, or worked with him, or knew him has a bad thing to say. All these bad things are being said by unnamed sources and liars who never knew him. Fuck them all.

When the truth is known about Heath Ledger, I believe it will show that he was using OxyContin, legal "heroin" , or Ritalin, legal cocaine. These drugs are chemically very similar to heroin and cocaine but you can get many MD's to prescribe them. They are cheaper than heroin or cocaine and they are "legal" to own.

As the director of Novus Medical Detox, we see the results of addiction to prescription drugs and how it ruins lives.

It is time that we face this issue or we are going to have an increasing number of people fall prey to these dangerous drugs.

We all battle our demons, and like the title says" They kept it hidden well". Heath was a great actor, plain and simple. You never once read or heard about him not showing up for work or out on the town acting all strung out, like some celebs. He was always a true professional and now that he's gone, all these stories are coming out about him being a drug addict. You never really heard that stuff when he was alive. Once a tragedy strickes, all the rumors start floating around. Have some respect for his family and his little girl, and unless you have some hard evidence to prove your facts, stop printing this crap about him. He was a great actor and and a wonderful human being, and nothing is going to change that. His death was so tragic and has left so many of us heartbroken. You can print all the nasty crap you want about him, we miss him and love him no matter what!!

I haven't said much on here regarding this, but how do you know that is true? YOU DON"T! I realize you are doing your job, I read your page early sometimes more than once, but coming from someone who had a problem, you can come back from things. The man has died, a child has lost her father, and parents have lost their child. Please stop reporting things that haven't been proven. It isn't fair to anyone. He isn't here to defend himself.

    Re: Devore

It hurts his family and friends, which he wouldn't want. It hurts his memory. And there is no PROOF that any of the allegations are even true. Timing is everything and it's really crappy to wait until he's dead to start coming out of the woodwork with his "alleged" drug use. Nobody had anything to say about it until they realized they could make a buck off his death. Sick.

The world has lost an amazing person no matter what you say about him. Stop following all the other tabloids by printing rumors and stick to the facts!!

"A secret ultimately doesn't change the person you knew. Every facet of a diamond is real, but each is a different view, so don't let let all that you held dear about your loved one be negated by some other part of them. What you knew was real. What you found out was most likely real also. If it was negative, do your best to realize that they were merely mortal just as you are. Forgive them if you need to, and try to accept the parts of them you didn't know. Death can invade our privacy and deprive us of the chance to explain our actions. As hard as it may be to understand, the withholding of a secret is usually not about you. It is about your loved one's keeping a part of themself just for the sake of their own identity or maybe not feeling good about a part of their own life. Perhaps keeping the secret actually gave them pleasure. You may feel that you would have understood had you been given the chance. You may be angry that you weren't given the chance. That makes perfect sense, since death robs us of our chances at many things, including the chance to redeem ourselves if that was our intent."

It is very very possible he was an addict and no one, other than those closest to him, would ever even know. This is so sad what these powerful drugs do to you–especially heroin. They will take anyone, rich or poor. My cousin lost complete control over her own life after years of heroin addiction; she lost all 3 of her children, her job, her apartment, everything. You don't love anyone as much as you love the dope; it's a feeling like that will be the only thing there for you in the end…nothing else becomes as important. I've watched her ruin her life more and more. I've watched her try and stop, actually do it, then go right back because she felt a piece of her was "missing". It's such a horrible, helpless feeling you experience as a loved one of an addict–my heart goes out to Michelle and Matilda. You are not alone.

  46. harlin says – reply to this

    Re: Janee

I cannot believe people- they keep saying they wish Perez would let him RIP- well fact is, as a celebrity your life is chosen to be in public eye and thus so is your death— if he wasnt so well known, we wouldnt care or talk about it, and he would be Resting in peace- but he is well known so people want to know the Whys and Hows- I cant stand a lot pf Perez;s stuff, but his updating the rumors and potential truths is reasonable in this scenario. While it may hurt Michelle etc, the fact is the drugs that are very rampant in Hollywood should be exposed so that we can combat the larger problem and not let it "RIP".

  47. harlin says – reply to this

The fact here is that hundreds of nightlife goers in NY do drugs- sometimes copiuous amounts- these people are not crack addicty AmyWinehouses, but real normal seeming lovelypeople who make it to work and function yet still DO DRUGS. Heath is someone, whom I know from firsthand NY knowledge, that went out and partied and DID drugs. Unfortunately for Heath he OD'D on whatever it is was abused that night. For those saying "Pneumonia, and Prescriotion" etc– here's a thought- LOOK IN YOUR CABINET- how many prescriptive drugs do you have- HE HAD TONS!!!!! I have Tylenol— hmmm0 what person needs 10 diff kinds of sleeping pills and anti-depressants? probably someone whom is abusing them– DUH!— The fact is that people can OD from ONE TIME people– it doesnt mean he was a scummy addict looking for the next fix, or a bad person, but rather someone whom had a VERY bad reaction from something we all know can kill us. Like any vice, when we keep getting away with it, we often feel untouchable- well this time he wasnt untouchable and this is the real RAW result of it. What we need is not to sweep it under the rug, but better education about drugs in a social context and the reality of what they can do beyond a fun night out partying.

    Welcome to REALITY folks.

This is sad news. Having drug problems doesn't mean that he wasn't a fine human being, though, whatever the kind of drugs he used. It means he was sick with a problem called…"addiction."

With all the talk and joking on drug addiction in the media, how is the "public" supposed to take recovery seriously? Perhaps we need to give young people hope. As far as the media goes, all we hear about is relapsers & stars "falling off the wagon." How about reporting on the stars who have MADE it through rehab and are working a progrAAm? Alcoholism & drug addiction is a disease & it is one that is never cured. I am an alcoholic - but I am a recovering alcoholic - and Heath's death should be a call to arms, in a way. A call to GET HELP. And the fact that all of these deaths revolve around mixing substances - from River Phoenix to Heath Ledger - someone needs to get the word out that you can only get so high before you inevitably fall.

He is such the thespian, that the tabloids never talked about his addiction, as opposed to the Lindsays and Britneys, etc. out there. What he hell? Why? How come this seems like a shock to us? How come the truth came out NOW that he was a drug addict? How come he wasn't being followed around like Britney, etc?
He was a great ACTOR, yet none of you cared about this big break-up, none of you cared that apparently, he was hooking up with every starlet out there that has had an addiction to something or an eating disorder. But enough of all of this stuff going on and on about him. Just let his family mourn in peace and let him rest in peace. It was a tragic loss and people should remember him as a great actor and a good father. Not a drug addict.

  58. jemima says – reply to this

People can chill once we find out. People want to know and if we can make everything else in hollywood our business then why can't we be interested in this? I don't even believe anyone that says they didn't want to know about this at least initially. SOme people think it's obvious that he did drugs so they've moved on. Other people want to know for sure. Once we know, everyone will carry on. Celeb children are destined to find out this stuff eventually. Sad but true. I don't remember any death of a celebrity that wasnt covered just as much if not more so. IT'S INEVITABLE ANYTIME SOMEBODY DIES!

Heath probably went heavy on heroin or cocaine before he came home that night. Either what he did was already enough to kill him or he pushed too far on some other less intense drug. It really is too bad no matter what actually happened. People desire being famous and don't realize the drawbacks of it. I'm surprised Ledger was into drugs though because he was doing a very good job staying out of the spotlight. Usually that can only help keep celebs out of trouble.

It is Pathetic everyone wants to put their hand in the pot and get money for selling their "story", when they probably met Heath once, if at all. I think that people should not print ANY hurtful, unproven stories until an official toxicology report is out, you know the report that is from people who KNOW what they are talking about, no money grubbing assholes.
And who gives a FLYING FUCK about his involvement with the Olsen twin???

toxicology reports won't suggest anything about what he's done a year ago, so why do all of you keep saying "wait till the toxicology reports". in no way do i think the media is doing ledger a service, but the reality is brilliant minds and their work hide deeply sick people. no one on this site can pretend they know who the REAL Heath Ledger is. on the same token, however, it was clear he had issues, and it wasn't just "nervous habits". people don't fuck lindsay lohan and become a well known Manhattan party fixture because they're sober. thats the reality, so get over your "omg its all speculation", and admit he's fucking human, died because of a likely mistake and will still remain one of the best actors of our time.

    1) for the person who said "can't be heroin, there would have been track marks". No. you can smoke heroin, bang heroin and snort heroin.
    2) regarding the people who say they would have found drugs in his apartment. Not necessarily. If he had a child who he loved more than anything in the world and that child visited his home, he would have not had drugs in the house. Not uncommon, especially if there was suspicion that he was using he would have done everything he could to continue visitation.
People who are actively using can fake good parenting (especially part time parents) for a good long while. There is the perception that they are passed out or shooting up all the time. there are many, many addicts who take enough to function and not withdraw - they live virtually normal lives.
    3) addiction is not up for judgement. It does not make you a good person or a bad person or weak or anything. it just makes you an addict. You can do good things or bad things while you are using. Clearly this is a good person who loved his child. Using does not make him bad, it just makes him an addict. that's all. He was a public figure which makes it 'of interest'.

  66. stupid says – reply to this

ok so if I say Heath was a drug user do I count as a "source" this is such bullshit. I tried heroin a couple of times. I shot cocaine a couple of times. I didn't become an addict. In fact, I've become a successful businessman. Not everyone who tries drugs becomes an addict. I'm not even sure that it's even a majority. People can either handle it or they can't. Unfortunately, by the time you've figured out that you can't handle drugs, it's too late. I would advise those who aren't sure they can handle it - don't do it. If you are sure that you can handle it, give em a try. You're gonna do it regardless of what anyone says, including the law.

The thing is…no-one will ever know what went on and what was said. I just think that at a time like this people need to respect the dead and not be wankers (a.k.a John Gibson) and try not to speculate on what really happened before his death.

It doesn't really mattered HOW he died - what matters is that a beautiful young man, so talented and in his prime, was taken at such a young age. Condolences to family and friends. Rumours will surround this for years, as rumours ten to do. Why wasn't this clip released for people to see while he was still alive? Oh no, you say. It would ruin his career. But maybe, just maybe, a child would still have her father (albeit not mega rich), and 2 parents might still have a son. Maybe Michelle might still have her partner. - Don't sweep it under the carpet anymore - drugs are a killer!
