With the on-going writer's strike still in effect, the big TV Execs at NBC have resorted to copying shows from other countries. The latest rip-off to enter the lineup will be Kath & Kim, a show based on the popular Australian series of the same name.
We can't really blame it on the strike, though. They would have picked this show up even if the writers were back at work.
The show is about a 50-something divorcee mother, Kath, and her snotty, spoiled 20-something daughter, Kim.
The roles of Kath & Kim are set to be played by Molly Shannon and Selma Blair.
Interesting combo.
Blair patented snotty and spoiled in Cruel Intentions and Shannon honed her 50-something shtick on Saturday Night Live.

At the very minimum this is an erroneous conclusion.
Unless the studio plans on using scripts from the original productions word for word, there's absolutely no correlation between the writer's strike and studios attempting to hit gold with American viewers by using a show that was a hit elsewhere. Hollywood has done this for decades, with television and in cinemas.

saddest part is that molly shannon is only 43 and selma blair is 35… must be a blow to her confidence to be playing a 50 y/o when selma is playing somoeone in her 20s

There is absolutely NO WAY that 'Kath & Kim' will translate to american. The beauty of the show is that it takes what is unique about the Australian language and dialect and magnifies it. I love Molly Shannon & Selma Blair, but they wont even come close to re-creating Kath & Kim…

OH yeah this show is so believable! Selma Blair is 35 and Molly Shannon is 43. That would mean that Molly Shannon would have been 8 years old in real life to have given birth to Selma Blair! Why don't they get a real 20 something year old and real 50 something year old and make this damn thing more realistic?? This is the main reason why I hate TV. Shite!!!

Uhhhh, someone doesn't know much about television history. Some of the most popular series of all times were American versions of British shows. It is hardly a new concept.

The Original 'Kath & Kim' show is actually kinda funny. Check out "Da Kath & Kim Code" - it runs frequently on the Sundance Channel (if you get it) for a maybe preview of what we will get here in the US. There's plenty of dysfunctional characters for all in the show.

Oh god, they will not be able to pull off Kath and Kim, the aussie versions cannot be copied, the whole thing that made our version of Kath and Kim good is because of the aussie humor, they had to change it to US actors because most US people do not get our humor.

in the original kath and kim the two actresses ARE NEARLY THE SAME AGE IN REAL LIFE. its part of the original humour that American's just won't get. I don't see how this could ever translate to America. It's Australian through and through.
it could work people. the idea of the show can be created again. and for it to be successful here in the states it would have to dig deep and expose all the weird quirks and character traits that a lot of americans have. it would have to be very clever. woohoo i hope kath & kim make a lot of money from it. Kath and Kim was a very funny show. Can't see how these two will do it any better. Like the original "Office" from Britain, the show on NBC cannot compete for sheer comedy.
I don't think anything can top Gina Riley and Jane Turner's Version….it's just so quick in it's humor I don't think American's can keep up :S I guess that is y they have to adapt it or it would crash and burn like Absolutely Fabulous.

This show will not work in an American version! Because it's all about Australian traits and how ridiculous they are, allowing us to laugh at ourselves. I can't see that working in the US.
Wake up perez. THE OFFICE and UGLY BETTY both originated in other countries. Ben Silverman is really good at this kind of theft.
The Aussie version of Kath and Kim is stellar… But I dont think the american market will 'get its' humor.. Itll be interesting to see how selma blair goes in the role as kim…
