Where Did Everyone Go?

awennherbiegrammy__opt.jpg

According to preliminary reports, last night's Grammy Awards telecast was the third least-watched ever in its history.

Last year 20 million people tuned in.

This year, only 17.5 million made the effort.

And the Recording Academy spent so much money to promote the cause since this year was its 50th Anniversary!

But, on the bright side, the Grammys did win the night…it beat out American Gladiators and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

They'll have to bring back Justin Timberlake next year!

BTW thanks for taking down your disrespectful post about herbie hancock, he is not deserving of gossipy bashing, like i said there before it was removed he got the votes, so he got the grammy. HOWEVER replacing it with an apology would have been in good taste. (to him as well as your fans) i truly value the trash you post, but that was your worst foot in mouth thus far. i hope you go out and buy all his work and start sucking up to legends with talent more often. hold yourself accountable.

Too short notice for people to hea that it was actually taking place. It was quite uncertain to have the writers' permission or end of their strike.

      109

I'll tell you why, because people have found this thing called the internet where they can find music they actually like because what is played on the radio isn't what people really want anymore. Nobody cares about Amy Whinehouse or Carrie Underwood anymore. Haven't we've seen them enough? When you can make better music in your own home that these people do in expensive studios and under the watchful eye of the lawyers who run the music business, yes lawyers run the music business and they decided what songs are good and which aren't and pretty much have control over who is a success and who isn't which doesn't surprise me that a crackhead/methhead/whino/man trapped in a woman's body won 5 grammy's lawyers always stick up for the scum of the earth.

The Grammys have been shit for the last 9 years. When you nominate no-talents like Amy Whorehouse and Kanye West, and have boring old Beyonce performing every damn year, you're going to lose viewers. Everyone's tired of that shit.

    16. NOT SURPRISING!!! says – reply to this

      116

Sure, open the show with a dead man singing (It's already been done people). That's a Great hook! The SHOW was Very Poorly Directed, PoORly PRODUCED, TeRRibLY Written. Not much wonder I had to turn it OFF!

alot of people have gotten pissed off with this, is there a show, will musicians cross the line, with the writers strike. It's gotten to we don't care about the b*llsh*t surrounding the show and the average american thinks the red carpet is stupid and self indulgent. Yes, it beat gladiators and extreme makeover, but gladiators was a repeat and makeover was a 2 hour show that is getting worn. Hollywood better look out. Yes, we complained about networks not having new shows, but then came more reality shows, games shows and all the cable networks that were previously ignored. I don't think the oscars are gonna do well either and don't blame jon stewart if it doesn't.

Honestly, I have stopped watching TV since the WAG strike. There's been nothing but crappy games shows and reality TV. I actually forgot to ever turn the TV on last night. I was reading a book. The only things I do watch these days is the episodes of Rome I missed on HBO, L&O reruns and Rock of Love 2.

    27. No grammy says – reply to this

      127

It was nice to see "really talented" people win last night; not just those that are on the popularity list. Unfortunately the public is tired of the same old crap that the grammy show has resorted to for the last 15 years. Same types of music—same old crap. Maybe now it will be about talent and not how much money or fame you can have. And by the way Ms Cole's comments about Amy Winehouse not deserving to win will probably haunt her in the future. Unfortunately some of the most talented people in the world write and compose their finest work when they have "issues". I don't think that by Amy winning it sends a negative signal….if it did have the hip hop music language that degrades women and and races would have sunk it years ago.

I watched the grammy's this year ONLY, I repeat ONLY b/c I wanted to see AMY Winehouse. Everyone and everything else was comicial at best. And it confirmed my opinion even more.

      130

The Grammys suck. They're a bunch of old men with fucking horrible taste in music. They'd rather award losers and crackheads instead of performers like Leslie Feist and Arcade Fire who have talent and class. They're also very biased AGAINST Canadian artists. I'm never watching them again. If you're a Feist fan, you can catch her performance at the Juno Awards on April 6. The Juno Awards are the Canadian music awards–not the Ellen Page movie.
By the way, go Ellen Go! Take that Oscar home girl!

The record companies have been shooting themselves in the foot for years. All they promote and all the radio plays is hip-hop or country. They killed pop music off. When the best song you can put out there is Crank that, you are in trouble. Why would anyone want to see these losers get awards? And seriously…all the old people..you feel like you're in a time machine watching these shows. How about someone new and young who makes catchy music that everyone likes?

I don't like Alicia either. And I actually BOUGHT her first album. This constant thing of seeing her everywhere is getting really getting old. She's at the Grammys every year. She's on Oprah and at the Superbowl. Alicia is the new Beyonce. And I got tired of Beyonce after she sang ALL the fucking songs at the Oscars. I got tired of that No One song after I heard it at the hair salon. STFU already Alicia!

Aretha Franklin sounded like she was yelling giberish into the mike, THERE WERE NO ACTUAL WORDS!!!

THIS WAS THE BEST SHOW EVER! Personally, I think everybody gave up watching over the past years as everyone got tired of rap and hip hop music. I know plenty of people who voiced the same thing. So they just stopped watching! But this year it was great! If u get the chance,,, see it on repeat on VH1! At least I hope they show it again, IM gonna record it ! It was unbelievable, so much talent and not so much rap crap and no BLAH BLAH BLAH!

    50. musician24 says – reply to this

      150

I realize that most of you have no idea who Herbie Hancock, but 200 years from now he will likely retain a legacy much like that of Mozart or Beethoven. He is one of the most important jazz musicians and composers of our time. People like Herbie have helped shape what we know as "popular" music today (like the music of Kanye and Amy, for example).

Instead of listening to only what is played on pop stations or in the clubs, I encourage all of you to listen to Herbie. If he won this grammy, he obviously is worth checking out.

    51. WHAAAT?!??! says – reply to this

      151

His album is not original!! It is not an original composition!! For anyone to call Herbie Hancock, a ripper and shredder of techno and classics, an original…well that is a joke!! What happened to Fergie? What happened to Evan's Blue, what happened to all the All American Rejects, 30 Seconds to Mars, Fall Out Boy….any white rock bands?!?! Did they get shot by the crackheads backstage?!?! Seriously, why was the show jam packed with rap & soul singers of black descent? Where were the white people? Is it me or was this entire show the most racist show ever?!?! If it were the opposite, you know the NAACP would be boycotting and banning up a storm!!

      152

Re: Not real at all!! – WOW!! It is so true! I turned off the VMA's for the same reason. It is one thing to break through color barriers, but to totally shut out young white rockers and pop artists altogether.well, it is just sad…

    53. spade says – reply to this

      153

We don't watch the show anymore because we don't care about most of the music or artists represented there. It's usually one long, BET soul/rap concert sprinkled with a few non-noteworthy appearances and performances by artists from other genres that nobody cares about. It's just one big overhyped, overrated, juvenile snoozefest. Nothing about the way that show is put together and presented represents that which is truly great about music. The GRAMMY award is supposed to be about excellence and innovation in music but instead it's just a ridiculously embarrassing showcase of uneducated arrogance, ignorance, and small-mindededness. It's like attending a high school basketball game wherein all of the alleged "cool" kids walk back and forth between their seats and the concession stand just because they crave being seen. Blech. It's time to completely overhaul the entire premise of the show.

The show sucked. I would have actually like to have seen some awards handed out instead of the runnig line under the crap that they did show saying what awards were handed out. It should have been a night to celebrate the winners instead of Alicia Keys' night. She didn't even win any thing did she? She must be blowing someone in charge beause she is every friggin where. I imagine that for a musician, it is the biggest thrill to win a grammy and only 4 or 5 actully got to have it televised on television. What a joke, they definately new a new producer next year.

    72. WhatAboutTheGoodMusic? says – reply to this

      172

The reason people have stopped watching is because the Grammys does not regard the REAL singer/songwriters. The bands that actually write their own lyrics and work their assess off singing in tiny, dirty clubs…not these pop princesses who get a song handed to them, already written and mixed (Rihanna, I'm talkin about you girl). How do you win an award for something that you really didn't do?!?!? I DON'T GET IT?!??! The Alternative Music award wasn't televised (go White Stripes), yet the Alt. Music scene is talentful and loved by critics and the bands' fans.
WAKE UP AMERICA!!! QUIT BUYING POP RECORDS AND ACTUAL REGARD ALT/INDIE MUSIC BANDS WHO WORK TEN TIMES HARDER!!!
Actually don't, because you'll totally destroy that music scene, the way you do everything else. Forget I said anything.

had her sing on one of his albums. I only watched 30 minutes of the grammys
and it was too boring. Bring back Christina Aguilera , know she has real
talent. Last year she blew the grammys. I like to watch her performance
