      Oxnard student declared brain dead

Lawrence King, 15, was shot and wounded at a junior high school Tuesday. A classmate faces murder charge.
By Catherine Saillant and Gregory W. Griggs, Los Angeles Times Staff Writers
      February 14, 2008
An Oxnard junior high student who was shot in the head by a classmate earlier this week was declared brain dead Wednesday, and the 14-year-old male suspect now faces a first-degree murder charge, authorities said.

Lawrence King, 15, was declared brain dead by two neurosurgeons about 2 p.m. at St. John's Regional Medical Center in Oxnard, said Craig Stevens, senior deputy Ventura County medical examiner. King's body remains on a ventilator for possible organ donation, he said. He was shot early Tuesday in a classroom at E.O. Green Junior High School.

Authorities initially believed that King was improving. But the boy's condition worsened early Wednesday, and he was placed on a ventilator a few hours later with his family nearby, said an official, who asked not to be named.

David Keith, an Oxnard police spokesman, said the family would have no comment and asked the media to respect their privacy.

Police said the suspect, whose identity was not disclosed because of his age, shot King at least twice at the beginning of the school day and then fled the campus. The boy was apprehended by police a few blocks away and is being held in Juvenile Hall. He is scheduled to appear in court today.

How sad. I'm all for expressing your individuality, but at that age….his momma should have said to him, "listen son, there are haters out there, so while I understand we shouldn't suppress who you are - why don't we not be so flamboyant about it and tone down the dressing like a girl a little bit". You know, I mean he's just a young boy and needed some guidance to help avoid controversy. And on the other hand, the other boy's momma needed to tell him it's not his fucking role in the world to try and make everyone conform to his ideas. So fucked up!

Truly a sad thing that is reality and no matter how far along we have come, there is still al LONG way to go. SOmetimes we make jokes at the expense of others and it is accepted. We need to realize that those jokes root a deeper hate that needs to be educated.

Yes, Perez, this is sad–but you do the same thing to people/actors–only with words. You don't care how hurtful your words are. So you are just as guilty of being cruel and mean emotionally/mentally to people. "Why's it so hard to love one another?" (Madonna)–maybe you should ask yourself why you feel the need to absolutely shred people in your column.

I fault the administration and counslers for this one. Junior high is a tough place. There is no leeway for difference. Peer pressure is horrible. if you have the wrong haircut, like different music, even don't like football–there is a price to pay. Much less a lifestyle difference. He should have been at a school (and they have them) that allowed this difference or been counseled on the how it would affect others and affect himself. I know that it would cause problems in most junior highs if a male came dressed in drag and was serious about it. No matter how much that person deserves that right. As my son said, It's hard enough being a heteorsexual dork, much less a gay/tranny dork.
