He may still be alive, but he's definitely no longer dictator of Cuba!
Fidel Castro has resigned.
The "President" announced his plans earlier today, in a statement published quietly overnight without advance warning in the online edition of the Communist Party daily Granma.
"I will not aspire nor accept—I repeat I will not aspire or accept—the post of President of the Council of State and Commander in Chief," said Castro.
The tyrant's brother, Raul, 76, is expected to take his place when the National Assembly meets this Sunday.
Fidel, 81, has not been seen in public since July of 2006.
His dark rule over the isle of Cuba lasted 49 years.

You know that there are plenty of people in Cuba that actually like Castro, right? And their healthcare adn education is free? And if you want to help Cuban's escape the 'tyrant' and his 'dark rule' then maybe US foreign policy shouldn't indulge in bully boy tactics in your 'own backyard' (as you have done for years) and open your borders to provide Cubans with some opportunities? Cuba maybe 90 miles off the US coast but it is not one of the fedderated states - so stop expecting it to act like one! (And I'm English btw - not Cuban and not a commie)

Well, I agree with the other skeptics' comments here that "dark rule" isn't exactly the best term to describe his rule. Fidel definitely filled all the criteria of a dictator, but his country is one of the healthiest on the planets despite his rule. No leader is perfect, but he certainly made life for the common person much better than any leader in the US has done with the exception of perhaps FDR.
