Giorgio Armani attacks Vogue's Anna Wintour
The Italian designer Giorgio Armani set fashion tongues wagging after he criticised the industry's reigning queen Anna Wintour.
Speaking at a press conference to promote the upcoming Metropolitan Museum of Art exhibition Superheroes, which he is co-chairing with Ms Wintour, Mr Armani said he could not understand why so many people dislike the US Vogue editor, claiming he was "indifferent" to her.
Not content to leave it at that, Mr Armani detailed what he thought sparked this dislike, referring to her championing of the US and French fashion industries and alleged lack of support for Italian fashion.
Standing with Ms Wintour, who supposedly once declared the Armani era over, he said: "I was told she said that, I hope that she didn't," according to reports in The Guardian.
Distancing himself further from his co-chair, he said they had different taste in clothes.
It was not immediately clear what inspired Mr Armani to break ranks with the traditionally more subtle air-kissing and back-stabbing atmosphere of the fashion world by criticising the industry's most powerful journalist to her face, but Ms Wintour's recent request that Italian designers group their shows more closely together to help US editors save money was not met with joy.
The top Milan shows once stretched over seven days but have now been compressed into four, leaving some lesser-known designers unable to attract top international editors to their shows.
Ms Wintour, whose dragon-like image was caricatured and brought into the mainstream in the film The Devil Wears Prada, based on a thinly-veiled roman à clef written by her former assistant, wields significant power in the fashion world and is often the brunt of criticism.
English-born Ms Wintour, who projects an image of fierce calm from behind her large sunglasses and sleek bob, has dominated the fashion industry for nearly two decades.
Mr Armani's work will appear alongside designs from John Galliano, Jean Paul Gaultier, Thierry Mugler and others in "Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy", a show that highlights the use of comic book imagery in fashion design. The exhibition opens in New York in May - assuming the co-chairs are still speaking to each other.

Sounds like he had good reason to be critical of her. Both Armani and Wintour have huuuuge qualifications under their belts dealing with fashion, so neither is wrong and neither is right. The article seems like it's making something out of nothing, and just telling us what we already know: the Italians know fashion, and Wintour can be a bitch sometimes.

I heard him say that because he was all over the news in Italy and I do watch Italian news.
My mom was visiting NYC from Europe. We went to the Met and lunch, then walked down 5thAve along the park. NYC celebrity sighting came up in conversation, and I said, "Look, Mom! There's Anna Wintour!" and she replied, "I dont know who that is." Anna heard her reply as she was getting into a limo, and nearly got whiplash to glare at my mom. I nearly fell off the curb laughing. Had to share that.

I think it is about time for Anna to step down. "One day your in, and the next… your out." I think she is out. Do not get me wrong, the woman has taste and an eye…but come on. 20 years?!? To be honest- I don't see how Armani was being that "critical." There's far more of this journalist's opinion in this article than actual quotations from Armani. And he said that he "could not understand why so many people dislike" her, and just commented on why he thought people might dislike her. Maybe there was some very subtle criticism, but it sounds more like this reporter is causing dramaaaa.

Armani's just mad because a few years ago the house said that if their clothes weren't used more liberally on editorial shoots, they might reconsider their advertising spend on that publication. Anna was the only one out of every editor to tell them to piss off.

Anna Wintour is a bitch. She is the one to blame for all the stupid trends in fashion industry - leggins, oversized glasses, huge bags and anorexic models. Armani is an amazing desinger - one of the best in the current fashion industry - she has no taste if she doesn't like what he does.
Anna Wintour is the reason why actresses are forced to be a size 0 in order to be in the cover, she has so much control of the fashion industry when she's not that qualified (she only went to high school). Vogue is a total shame. They promote an unattainable ideal that is not a reflection of the American female population.
