Sorry but this is being blown out of proportion. Having worked with many doctors and obstetricians, the truth is a glass of white wine is not harmful. If she was queasy and knew some sips of wine would help, it is no more harmful than if she heaved and hurled for 15 minutes.
I am positive she eats like a bird and watches EVERYTHING that goes in her mouth, and highly doubt she drinks often considering the calorie content and the fact her husband is sober.
If a glass of wine was harmful none of us would even be here. Renaissance era anyone?
I don't even like Nicole Kidman, but come on people…. The biggest mouthy bashers here are clearly the most uneducated.
All this trash talking when you don't even know if it's true and don't even know the circumstances is just absurd.

I didn't know I was pregnant (8 weeks) went out th my girlfriends drank like a fish - got totally blitzed - I lost that baby. I was lucky to get pregnant again - didn't touch a drop had healthy baby boy 3 years later - til' this day, I don't drink like that - ever. She's a dumb ass and is obvioulsly starving herself to stay skinny. Vain, ungrateful, bitch.

My god, I can't believe some of you people. Alcohol = Miscarriages. Miscarriages happen to people who do EVERYTHING right and by the book. Alcohol = Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and cognitive deficits in the child. GET IT RIGHT.

P.S. One glass of wine does NOT cause FAS.

most ob-gyns today allow their patients to have 2 glasses of wine or similar alcoholic beverages twice a week. slightly new concept in america but the europeans have been doing it for ages. its actually healthy for yourself and for the baby, so don't criticize or judge her.

Re: Lulu – seriously, i'll get a little drunk while having had ONE beer. i don't think that alcohol in any form is good for a fetus - and i don't think that alcohol in any form could be healthy - well it helps to relax, thats an important thing, but there are other ways to relax.
and on a night with thousands of cameras, no pregnant woman should drink, should she?
btw: the abuses you do while pregnant don't have to be recognizable during the first few babyyears. i'd rather be careful with it.

She comes from a different culture. She may have grown up learning different things.
It's ONE glass of wine. If she were doing keg stands, that's different. One glass of fermented grape juice is very unlikely to harm her unborn child. Hell, with all the media crap she deals with while she's there, I don't blame her.

  11. kt says – reply to this

    311

A glass of wine won't hurt a baby. As long as the mother to be isn't getting drunk, a glass of wine if just fine. It's good for the mother on a few accounts. Of course in the correct amounts.

When I was pregnant I was sick to my stomach 24/7 from 6 wks on. It was terrible. I craved 3 things - steak and champagne and ginger ale. I have never been more than a very rare social drinker - and not usually champagne, but that is all I wanted. My doc told me to enjoy a 2-shot-glass sized drink 3x a week (every other day roughly) if I wanted it. It calmed my sickness and my nerves and I had a very healthy almost 9'lb boy. If your doc knows and approves and monitors you and your blood sugar is okay, it can be fine. She may have had non-alcoholic champagne or sparkling white grape juice that someone mistook for white wine.

    315

one glas doesn't cause fetal alcohol syndrome, the issue is what happens later when the child attends school, gets a job, etc etc. some women drink a lot and their kids do well in school, others have just one or two classes and their kids are always behind. docs say no alcohol because they don't know which pregnancy will result in the child having lifelong difficulties. people are so selfish sometimes it kills me.

  16. laine says – reply to this

    316

Forget about the drinking for a minute, but this chick looks like she's injected her lips with collagen and botoxed the rest of her face. She also travels a lot. I think you can dye your hair with non ammonia products, so I give her a pass on that. Bottom line, she is over 40 and has had high risk pregnancies. She shouldn't be doing any of the shit she is apparently doing.

  17. Peggy says – reply to this

    317

Oh for f**k sake! Women are more than just vessels! Having a glass of wine is not "boozing". That sort of inflammatory language is so unfair. Ms. Kidman is well past the biggest danger point of a pregnancy. She is obviously VERY healthy and she will do the baby no harm at all to have a glass of wine. She could even have (gasp) two glasses of wine. Stop being so puritanical.

  20. b says – reply to this

    320

I really hope this isn't true. I have a 3 month old baby, and I was very careful during my pregnancy not to drink, smoke I'd be around smokers, etc. As a parent, you have a responsibility to do what is best for your child, before as well as after they're born. Cravings or not, its easy to avoid things that are potentially harmful. So many things can go wrong for no reason, why wouldnt you do everything in your power to protect that little growing baby inside of you? Anyone who doesnt read up on do's and don'ts for pregnancy or ignores them is irresponsible and selfish.

    322

Doctors all over Europe tell women it is okay to have an occasional glass of wine. In fact a Scottish woman I know was told to have a Guiness a day while she was pregnant (for the iron). Europe had a lower infant death rate than we do, and currently live 5 years longer than we do.

    Just saying.

    324

If you have done any intelligent reading into this you will know that a drink is fine!! FAS is not caused by the occasional drink, it's caused by alcoholism. Do you think French women stop drinking? Italians? It's only because Americans can't stop at one and know nothing about moderation and doctors don't want to be sued that they say no drinking. I'm pregnant, I have an occasional glass of wine and my midwives agree. Enjoy your glass of wine Nicole!

  25. Melanie says – reply to this

    325

She announced her pregnancy months ago and doesn't look pregnant at all (look at Angie's boobs and bump compared to hers). I don't think she's pregnant anymore — she would never do such a thing after her miscarriages.

If she's pregnant - shame on her (since she's high risk). If she lost the baby - that's very sad.

  26. No Love For Her says – reply to this

Nicole Kidman is cunning and calculating, not to mention a shitty actor. She really is high society white trash. The world would be better if people of her ilk just go away.

not that i think its a swell idea to risk doing anything when you've had so many pregnancy problems in the past, but i have read recently that its okay to drink in moderation while pregnant.

    328

It is okay to have a glass of wine occasionally while you are pregnant. You just shouldn't drink a gallon of vodka.

  29. What's the big deal? says – reply to this

    329

Why do Americans insist on making women who have a bit of alcohol while pregnant out to be criminals? As many people have mentioned, it is generally believed by most doctors that a BIT of alcohol during pregnancy is harmless. While pregnant women in America are vehemently attacked if even the thought of ordering a glass of wine enters into their mind, it is quite common for pregnant European women to order a glass of wine in public without this sort of public shaming and stigmatization. Americans need to get more educated on the subject before jumping on the attack.

  30. Nic's an alco says – reply to this

    330

My sister drank a glass of wine a day during her pregnancy. "They do it in Europe" and "The doctor said it was ok" were her reasons.

My niece is developmentally disabled and has physical signs of FAS.

The truth is, medical science doesn't know what alcohol does to the fetus, and it may only affect some pregnancies. Doctors don't like to admit to ignorance on a topic, so with the hit and miss element it's easier to say, oh go ahead, it'll be ok. Sometimes it does harm the child. Anything to the contrary is a rationalization or misinformation.

The baby will likely be fine, but the question is, why take the chance? Huh, Nicole?

There is nothing wrong with a pregnant woman having the occasional glass of wine. Any OB GYN will confirm this. When you can get pregnant and give birth, or have a medical degree, then your judgment will be legit Perez.

  34. Shireen says – reply to this

    334

Listen I know this is hard to believe but, RECENT (AND EVEN LONG-PAST) STUDIES HAVE SHOWN ONE GLASS OF WINE A DAY WILL NOT BE HARMFUL TO A BABY, AND MAY EVEN HELP IT. YES HELP IT.

I know because of past stigma, and fetal alcohol syndrome statistics and all that, many women would not even consider it, and that's fine. BUT European countries, and probably Australia also, have known this for years. Recently, these findings have been reported on MSNBC and other respected news channels also. They even talked about it on Scrubs, for those of you who don't read the news.
While if I had had a history of miscarriages, I probably wouldn't risk it, it's possible that in Australia they do believe that wine would help, and if that's the case you guys really shouldn't be so hard on her. As long as it was just ONE glass, it's really no big deal.

  35. Sky says – reply to this

    335

Scientific studies have proven that it is okay to drink a glass of wine a day. There will be no harmful effects to the baby.

    336

One glass of wine is no big deal…much healthier than stress on the baby, and if she needed a glass of wine to calm her nerves at the OSCARS then so be it…And as for the douches criticizing her for botox and dying her hair…you don't know if she's had botox recently and the hair dye thing is a way over-stated myth. The fact is, doctors and hairstylists agree, it's not a big deal, but most people err on the side of caution anyway.

  37. MIZRachael says – reply to this

    337

    in response to: Gypsytrill:

This day and age women can not only leave their houses when they are pregnant, but they are also allowed to dye their hair. Most hair products are now safe to use during pregnancy, and perhaps that is why you dont see a LOT of disgusting gross roots on pregnant women.

I must say that given her past, and myself having a bad history with miscarrying and finally pregnant and going all the way— I am dissapointed if she would chance doing something like that.. For her sake and that little one's I hope it was non-alcoholic.

Cindy Adams can be so annoying. A glass of wine after the Oscars is not going to cause fetal alcohol syndrome. Actually, as Miss Adams probably knows, it's usually women without a lot of money who are targeted as being enemies of their fetuses. Wealthy women generally are told that a glass of wine or two is not a bad thing. It is pretty disgusting to try to make Nicole Kidman look bad because of a drink after the Oscars. Perhaps Miss Adams should worry about her own life. She can worry about her dog…oops , is it dead? sorry. just give it some wine

Hair Dye and Wine are not forbidden during pregnancy
Wine actually helps control high blood pressure in some pregnant women and blood pressure issues can lead to preterm labor. As long as it isn't more than one glass once in a while it isn't a big deal.

What you people aren't realizing is that drinking is not good for the fetus. Yes, you can get away with it. Your baby won't die. And yes, you can find some doctor that may corroborate your fantasy that drinking is good for a little fetus. Why don't you give birth and put white wine in the bottle? The bottom line is that drinking while you're pregnant is worse than smoking when you're pregnant. So I guess this board is a tribute to smoking while pregnant.

There is no proof that hairdye is bad during pregnancy. I wouldn't reccomend it more than once every 4-6 weeks, however. Botox no way. Alcohol probably not very smart for any pregnant mama , especiallly one w/ past complications.

If you have one drink it really isn't a big deal….I have had two kids and had a half a glass here and there while being pg and it isn't a problem. Don't judge until you are in their place.

"You wouldn't give a newborn baby even a drop of wine, so why would anyone give a whole glass of white wine to an unborn fetus? " Actually some religions do give newborns drops of wine. I believe that the jewish do so before performing the Bris (circumcision) and the babys are less than a couple of weeks old at that time.

I doubt nicole chugged the wine, she may have only had a few sips. Unless you were there i don't think any of us have the right to judge her on it.

She's not an American. The rest of the world realizes that you can have a few drinks and it won't harm the baby. They've done studies recently and it's a smaller problem than it was originally thought to be. It will not harm her to have a bit of white wine. Women have been drinking during pregnancy in moderation for thousands of years. It's okay, just don't be a drunkard.

One glass of wine isn't going to cause a miscarriage, nor is it going to cause FAS. Some of the people who read you hang onto your every callous word without bothering to educate themselves. If you're going to do their thinking for them, at least don't spread misinformation.

It has lots of vitamins in it - and nobody that did it for their entire pregnancy EVER had a retarded child or a child with fetal alcohol syndrome or with any problems whatsoever.
All you idiots out there have been brainwashed by your media that lies to you constantly. I believe most of you are just plain stupid as a matter of course.

America must be the only country that has such pathetic morons running their mouths and telling everyone else how to live their lives.
SHUT UP ALREADY! The world is tired of you.

My doctor stated that one glass of wine every once and awhile is okay. If you didn't see her chugging more than one this story has no validity to it.

IMO it's probably better to have a glass late in the preganancy (when the baby is more or less maturing and just putting on weight) vs early in the pregnancy (when everything is developing)…but why even bother. There are varying degrees of FAS, and a drink, especially if it's early in the pregnancy, probably wouldn't be the best idea ever.

Ok, this is probably just a rumor, since Perez seems to hate on her all the time. The New York Times is not a very good source-it's not exactly known for its responsible journalism. That being said, if it is true, some women, especially in other cultures, see no problem with having a small amount of wine from time to time. While not encouraged, many doctors will agree with the fact that this is most likely fine for your baby's health. Bottom line, it's her business, especially since she was not stumbling around drunk. I think someone's just jealous of her because she seems to be content.

I delivered my second healthy, beautiful baby girl seven weeks ago and enjoyed the occasional (once weekly) glass of wine during both pregnancies. My doctor recommended it, especially in late pregnancy, to help me relax and not think too much about the impending pain/stress of labor. We Americans are idiots about this- almost everything in moderation is fine, even during pregnancy. It's just that most people are unable to understand the word 'moderation'.

when you're pregnant, a glass of wine isn't bad. if you're drinking hard liquor or downing a whole bottle, then we have something to talk about.

For all you women saying "one glass of wine is ok, the doctor says so!!" They aren't saying that with 100% certainty or ironclad statistics to back that up. It PROBABLY is ok, but they don't know that for sure. Why would you even fucking risk it?? Nine months is not that long.

And I second the opinion "no wonder she keeps having miscarriages". Not to say that drinking while pregant actually does that, but if she is being that careless who knows what else she does that could cause her to miscarry.

Who really gives a shit? Women crave lots of things while pregnant… And if she wants a damn glass of wine who's to say she shouldn't have it? I'm not even a huge fan of hers, but really c'mon… A glass… 2 … A bottle of white wine isn't going to fucking kill the kid!

if you've researched the recommendations offered to pregnant women by doctors, generally it is ok to have a glass of wine or a beer occasionally. it has not been proven to harm a fetus.

    You don't miscarry from drinking!
It's also fine to have wine/alcohol when your pregnant, but only once in a while. Ask your doctor!

The Surgeon General says you should abstain from drinking alcohol when pregnant. That's a fact. They don't what, if any amount of alcohol is safe. Why take chances? You can stay off the sauce for 9 months if you try.
