you guys are dumbasses. That's a farrowing crate for mother pigs. They are placed in there when they have to nurse the piglets and they're not allowed to move around (only stand and lie down). And Peta's dumb because the reason these pigs are put into those crates is because it decreases their chances of crushing their piglets. A normal sow can weigh easily 400 pounds.

Pigs are put in gestation crates no larger than their bodies for most of their lives - used as baby makers - Pregnant, uncomfortable and unable to move, totally inhumane. Unfortunately for PETA, they use such extremes in their ads that it puts off most people who aren't aware of animal struggles.

Re: veterinary stsudent – The reason that pigs bite one another's tails in "larger" enclosures is because they are still packed into ridiculously, and unnaturally small, filthy spaces and they become neurotic and violent. They essentially go insane. And you should specify that we are talking about FACTORY farming practices here. Small family farms don't put their pigs in gestation crates (which have been outlawed in some places because of their cruelty) and yet they don't seem to have these problems you speak of. Perhaps because their pigs are allowed to engage in natural behaviors, they don't then resort to UNnatural ones, like biting one another's tails off.

Well, I'm British, and this is a protest in Britain, and in this country there are already many strict legislations in place to recommend what is cruel. This issue has been dealt with. The time the mother is restricted in movement is very limited. These animals are able to move most of the time in a large area, even if they are famed "intensively" indoors. They have to have a soft setting under foot, and plenty of room to run around and root. They're also not fed any growth hormones.

The mother pig simply, for economic reasons, would not be able to be with her piglets if she was not restricted, and as farming as in an industry hardly even breaks even as is, I think this is entirely fair. And much better than them being removed at birth as is possible in countries with less restrictions…

…and as for workers being treated like shit. Farming is typically a family industry, and there is a minimum wage in this country. Workers here have rights.

What those dumb asses at PETA don't know or neglect to learn it that putting sows in gestation stalls is much safer for the animal. Also it's much easier to monitor the animals health and well being if they are in individual stalls. If they kept the pigs in one big pen the animals would constantly fight (which means increased animal injury) and competition for food (which means many animals would not get the proper nutrition needed). They need to learn the facts before they preach to others on what they should eat. They are filling the publics minds with wrong and misinformed information.

You are grossly misinformed. These sows are basically only let out of these contraptions to breed again. Pigs aren't allowed to "run". That makes them lose weight and no farmer wants a skinny pig. I also don't recall "harumph" saying anything about how the workers are treated.

The U.S. has strict regulations as well and look at what recently happened there. There is a massive beef recall over the treatment of the cows and sick cows being butchered. Don't think that these things don't go on in your country as well.

For those of you who aren't sure what a woman in a cage has to do with eating pork I'll give you the lowdown….In large scale hog operations sows are often kept in stalls to protect them mainly from hurting each other and the people who work with them. Some people say it's cruel, some people say that it's safer for everyone involved. But PETA is basically putting a mother in a cage and saying that its an unhappy mothers day for pigs because they're in cages as well.

Um, humans are also made out of 'meat'. The animal meat you eat is mainly muscle, some fat & (in the case of burgers, hotdogs etc) organs. Humans are made of the same stuff.

The point PETA are trying to illustrate is that sows (female pigs) are kept in small metal crates for most of their lives, including during pregnancy & birth (hence the 'Mother's Day' reference). I'm a meat-eater and I reckon it's important to know where you're food comes from if you're going to eat it. I think all decent people would agree that cruelty to animals is unnecessary. The use of crates is definitely cruel.

The piglets once removed from their mothers are actually placed in large enough areas to run around until they're of an age and size where they're slaughterable. Most pigs in BRITAIN - the country this article is about - are farmed this way. This is what I am discussing.

And actually, what you're discussing about cattle in your country is 10-15 years behind the UK in animal welfare. Fact. Take veal for example… look at the ways that's farmed ONLY IN THE US!!

You do realise that being "pro - meat" isn't a bad thing? Your body is designed to metabolise protein, and I guarantee you're not getting enough if you're vegan. I'm a chemist - I could tell you all the lovely effects that has on you, if you'd like…. ever hear of amino acids? Building blocks of life? Nitrogen in that - get that from protein - comes from meat?
