Snub!
Filed under: Canadialand > Film Flickers
Let's do some 'math' for the film Juno.
Canadian director + Canadian lead actors + movie shot in Canada = Canadian movie (right?)
Not so, according to the folks at the Genies, the Canadian equiv of the Oscars!
To be considered Canadian, a film has to be financed with Canadian money.
Juno's financing came from an LA based company.
Juno director, Jason Reitman, spoke out about the snub at a pre-Oscars bash at the Canadian Consulate in LA, "…how are we not eligible for a Genie when David Cronenberg's film (which was partially financed by a Canadian company) about Russians living in London shot in England with a British crew and British cast is eligible? I'm sorry, but somebody is going to have to explain that to me; I don't get it."
We don't get it either!
Update: A publicist for the Genie awards just sent us the following statement.
"Thanks so much for your coverage of the Genie Awards but I would like to clear up the confusion surrounding the movie Juno. The movie wasn’t snubbed by the Genies because it was never submitted to the Genie Awards. I have provided below a quote from our CEO, Sara Morton that will hopefully clarify the situation.
Juno is an excellent film and the Academy salutes its success, which reflects the work of many talented Canadians both in front of and behind the camera. Regrettably, the filmmakers decided not to enter the film into the Genie Awards.
In order to be eligible for the Genies, a film must be Canadian, as defined by CAVCO and the CRTC. These are the accepted industry standards for recognizing a film as Canadian.
Ultimately, it's up to the filmmaker to decide whether to seek Canadian certification. It would not be appropriate for me to speculate about the reasons for a filmmaker's decision, or why they may or may not qualify."

Definitely should have got a nomination. Totally agree, Perez!
BUT - Ellen Page WAS nominated for a best actress Genie for her turn in The Tracey Fragments so that makes me really happy! Ellen fucking rocks.

Canada doesn't care about the Genie awards anyways…

-just thought i'd throw that out there becasue i am in minneapolis right NOW!
cheese
The elites in charge of the Canadian Genies awards are a suffocating bunch of elitist assholes. They only nominate money losing films and boring films.
They get threatened if a Canadian film is too successful and too popular. They hate successufl films and only nominate losers mostly.
Too many failures and losers in charge of Canadian culture unfortunately.
Well, if the Canadian industry isn't getting the money from it, and it doesn't take place in Canada then neither our economy or culture is profiting from it…so it's totally logical why it's eligibly for a Genie
As a person working in the film biz in Vancouver, if you don't have any local actors, even under 5 lines, are you really a Canadian film? And should you really ask why you are not eligible for an award? It used to be that awards were a reward. When did it become a request?
Canada has embarrassed me on this one!!!
yeah well the genies are a bigger snoozefest than the oscars, so really, its not such a big deal.
I so didn't get this movie. Was it supposed to be some quirky, different kinda thing? The charactors were really, really unbelievable. Teens don't act like this. Juno was not that great, just another forgettable movie trying to "different and strange."
who cares! i wanna impregnate ellen page
Did they film this during the writers strike? Hmmm???
Who cares.
The film was good but way overrated but to say a movie can't be nominated because of where it's money came from is crazy.
Does it matter? The Canadian film industry is a joke. It's almost embarassing to be recognized! I love living in Toronto, don't get me wrong, but I don't know if I'd feel *snubbed* if my talents weren't awarded here.
People are proud of Avril. 'Nuff said.
Um, they were just nominated for OSCARS … Don't they have enough accolades? Get over it.
That actually makes perfect sense, what is there to not get?
Didn't you see the nice American flags in the classroom? I'm not sure where in Canada you're from, but there sure aren't any yanky flags round these parts.
"teens don't act like this"
Speak for yourself.
So I figure you have met everyone in this world? I actually have a lot of friends who were like Juno.
Ellen Page is the shit!
Wow,
Darn that.
Anyways,
Ellen is amazing!
i absolutely LOVE her!
She's my idol.
Please post more of her Perez.
=D
Both Michael Cera and Ellen Page are Canadian citizens.
The Genies celebrate government support, government welfare and handouts not creative ingenuity in financing and coming out with a critical, financial success.
Most of the cultural government support $$$$$ always goes to that one distinct province (and their constant whining and complaining) so no wonder they won't award a truly independent Canadian film. It's not about celebrating Canadian culture but about playing the CanCon games and awarding dumb boring Canadian movies no one ever sees that get government handouts and play their stupid games.
you're a stupid ass perez!!! Who cares if the director and actors are from canada. Why would that make the movie canadian?
She was snubbed because she is a lesbian. She is out and proud and wearing the crown. She is, indeed, gay and a member of LGBT.
Take it from a Canadian, Perez, this surprises no one up here. The Genies are a sham and a joke. Always have been, always will be. Anyone who knows anything about anything, ignores them completely.
in all fairness, america always snubs canadian films at the oscars… eastern promises was 1000x better than that crapfest no country for old men
She's a lezbo and Juno sucked.
WOW,
I
AM
INTRIGUED.
Canada is one of the best countries on the planet. Americans are self-centered and proud of their nation for reasons unknown and unfounded. You would do well to take a page out of Canada's book.
It's quite simple - the CRTC (Canadian Radio-telvision and Telecommunications Commission) sets the Canadian Content laws that govern what are considered "Canadian" movies, and they are fucking ridiculous.
WHAT
WILL
I
DO
WHEN
SARCASTIC
LITTLE
TWATS
GO
OUT
OF
STYLE?.
It is just politics, they are only killing themselves… which in turn is Canada as a country.
This…"girl"…looks just like a guy. Lord!
She stinks. "Diablo" Cody has nude photos on Defamer– they are as NASTY (in the wrong way) AS YOU CAN IMAGINE! These CUNTS were MADE for each other. FUCK CANADA!!!!
Everyone knows the Genie's are a joke. They are the kiss of death to any decent Canadian actor.
If a U.S. based company is going to make the profit from a film, then that film isn't "really" a Canadian film. It's the way it's always worked… It's pretty tacky that the director is feeling snubbed considering he was fully aware of the rules before-hand. It's also pretty sad he feels entitled to a nomination because he has gotten other ones… Making movies isn't about the awards you receive.
OK, I have not read all the comments so maybe someone already said this. It says that it has to be financed with Canadian money to be elgible. Juno was not. That is the rule. It may be a stupid rule, but that's how it works. Cronenberg's movie was financed with Canadian money. It's elgible. I don't understand the confusion here. The movie is ineligible. The rules dictate that it has to be a 2007 movie. If you submit a 2008 movie it will also be ineligible no matter how awesome it is. And just so you know, I thought Juno was one of the best movies ever. It sucks they are ineligible but I certainly don't understand how it does not make sense and how anyone needs it explained to them. If every movie were eligible it would be anarchy so some sort of rule has to be established. This is there rule. This is not some personal vendetta against Juno people.
Ellen's career is about to pull a Heche! Say GOODBYE to all the awards honey!!! Here's to the next Jodie Foster. OH THAT's RIGHT– She's still WORKING!!!! Go BACK TO CANADA YOU MUTANT CUNT!!!!
Ellen Page is such a dork. Her acceptance speech at the Spirit Awards was so snotty and ungrateful. She blabbed about how Juno was the best script she had ever read. How many scripts has she read!? Seriously. What a dork.
Suck it Ellen Page. You've bought into the hype. Loser.
You frozen CUNTS and your TIM HORTON COFFEE!!! That shit has NICOTINE IN IT (like a pack of cigarettes' worth)!!! Ellen Page has ONE FUCKING NOTE in her DYKE BAG of TRICKS. She is a CRAP actress… SEND HER BACK TO THE LAND OF TWATS and COUSIN-FUCKERS!!!
When did JANEANE GAROFALO get new teeth?
YOU GO GIRL!!!! THERE ARE PLENTY OF EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES FOR LESBIANS IN MEDIA!!!! You can be on the L-Word, or you could host a talk show, or you can go into porn!!! Hooray!!!! GO CANADA!!! WE LOVE YOU ELLEN!!! ALL THE LESBIANS OF THE WORLD SUPPORT YOUR CHOICE TO COME OUT OF THE CLOSET!!!!
The movie was shot in MN
Tough shit. That movie sucked
wow, I am appalled at how you American's represent yourselves on here. I am embarrassed for you. Fucking bible thumpers, go convince yourself that evolution doesn't exist, IDIOTS!!!
People try to avoid things like pregnancy while they will happily support films that are teeming with violence. I think this formality was just an excuse… and I am Canadian, I think the Genies should be DAMN proud of it:) Juno was such a good movie.. I think it deserved more respect than people have been giving it.
Actually, Juno was never even registered as a Canadian file (a prerequisite for a Genie) so in essence Juno disowned its Canadian roots well before it was nominated for an Oscar. Furthermore, if the only criteria for a Genie was that the movie starred a Canadian and/or was made in Canada and/or was directed by a Canadian than PLENTY of Hollywood funded movies should have been nominated for a Genie. If Juno producers wanted the film to be Canadian they should have registered the movie as Canadian, but my suspicion is by doing so they would not have gained favour with US distributors. Educate yourselves on the protocol before you look like idiots.
juno, jason reitman, and ellen page are all cocksuckers.
We in Canada eat our young. One mustn't get too famous or successful as it is offensive to the rest of us. How dare Ellen have success in the U.S.! The cheek! We have practically disowned Celine Dion, after all. My message to Ellen is this: please dumb yourself down so the rest of us Canadians will find you more palatable.
for a film to be considered from a country, lets say spain, it has to be financed by a spanish company.
it could be made in germany with an australian crew about chilean people, but if it's financed by spain, its a spanish film.
the theme and crew don't matter that much.
if it's partially financed by 2 countries, then (from what i remember from my film class)
the crew and cast have to do with the equation to determine from where the film is.
it's sounds confusing, but it kinda makes sense.
Im Canadian and the Genies suck period so not a big deal to us.So most of us realize that the retards that select movies for the award are a bunch fuck up people from Toronto.Good movie go and see it,kudos to the Canucks that made it
I'm Canadian and NO ONE gives a fuck about the Genies up
here.
I must inform you all that our women are some of the finest ladies in all the lands. Ellen is not a lesbian. I must inform you that you have it all wrong. It is simply that on the tundra, we were just never taught how to dress and behave in a feminine way. It is very cold in Canada, and I must inform you that with the limited time that we have to show ourselves (our bodies) to a prospective mate, it is often easier to just wear simple clothes- to allow for simple viewing. Let me tell you. Ellen is a very enticing slice of woman, and I would mate with her any day of the month! Canada is a misunderstood place. Just because we can't look as appetizing as you does not mean that we don't have feelings.
what part of "To be considered Canadian, a film has to be financed with Canadian money" do you not understand?
this news is actually like three weeks old. i'm surprised it didn't reach perez's radar sooner.
although, being a canadian and living in toronto i guess that explains why we already knew about it.
and i am thoroughly disappointed by the fact that this great movie won't considered for the genies, although not like many people watch it anyways.
